EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by Happy Shopper on Feb 7, 2017 16:18:42 GMT 1, Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI)
Has anyone had to apply to HMRC for one of these numbers for sending high value items out of the UK to US?
Flight Logistics suggest I need to apply for one, but the forms seem to be for businesses exporting goods.
Anyone have any similar experience?

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by RoboJ on Feb 7, 2017 16:34:07 GMT 1, You shouldn't need this if you are not VAT registered. The EORI number is basically GB plus your VAT number. Just notify the courier you are not vat registered/not a business.

There's a version of the form for businesses not VAT registered... So I don't think that's quite right.

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by Happy Shopper on Feb 8, 2017 10:56:21 GMT 1, Well, as far as I can see you need to be a business, exporting things to be resold abroad or for your business purposes. But FL say individuals need it too, to clear customs more easily... and when I wrote to HMRC and explained what I do they said I need to apply for one... but the form they sent clearly says you need to be a business... so I sent them more questions and pointed out the info on the form and now haven't heard back!

It's effectively a European VAT number and is used for reclaiming/paying VAT on purchases/sales. As you're not VAT registered or a business I don't believe you need one.

Do you pay income tax on the items you sell?

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by Art Fan 2011 on Feb 8, 2017 12:29:20 GMT 1, Yes. Any other questions? I filled in the form and it took a business day to receive a response. So you have an EORI number even though you don't export as a business and aren't VAT registered? Do you pay income tax on the items you sell? If you are buying things with the intention to sell then you are considered a business, whether you consider yourself one or not. Each country has its own rules, and it sure does get confusing. Id try sending the item in question with another carrier, they may not ask you to provide an EORI number.

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by Happy Shopper on Feb 8, 2017 13:04:44 GMT 1, So you have an EORI number even though you don't export as a business and aren't VAT registered? Do you pay income tax on the items you sell? If you are buying things with the intention to sell then you are considered a business, whether you consider yourself one or not. That's the big issue isn't it. As a collector you don't buy with the intension of selling, but at what point does that item just become private property that you can sell without declaring it as income? I think this is the grey area that a lot of eBay sellers work in (and many on here).
The scary thing about the EORI number is that if you sell outside the EU, then the Tax Man can start to see what you're selling and adding it up. :/ Pretty sure I'd be inside the Capital Gains Allowance anyway, but it's just another pain... And I imagine we'll have to do this kind of form filling even within the EU after Brexit too!

They specify to fill different forms depending whether you're VAT registered or not, and that makes it sound like it's just for businesses, but it seems individuals are being asked for them too. It's very confusing, as the conditions for needing one (written on the forms) contradict what HMRC says in emails.

Yep, but you can also get an EORI number without a VAT number.
Has anyone else had to apply for one as an individual, or worked out an alternative?

Sorry to revive an old thread... did you ever resolve this? Iโm in a similar position having sold something of value that needs to be shipped to the US.
My understanding seems to be the same as yours - I can apply for a number as an individual without a VAT number, but would be grateful to know if all went smoothly for you.
Thank you!

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by racket on Oct 30, 2018 21:42:55 GMT 1, I had the same with FL - you need an EORI number whoever you are for exporting higher value goods which they need for the customs documents. Nothing to do with income tax etc. I think with Royal mail, parcelforce, etc it's built into their system so not required by individuals.

Thank you - and did you apply for a number, or did you use a different shipping company? And yes, this is with FL.

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by k2 on Oct 30, 2018 22:16:59 GMT 1, Advice direct from HMRC: You have indicated you are exporting personal or private goods, and are therefore classed as a private exporter (PR). An EORI number is used for Business or Commercial imports, so you are advised to make a request to your Freight/Clearing agent for your import to be cleared under โGBPRโ. GBPR stands for Private and is used to identify Import/Exports consignments of a private (non-commercial) nature, regardless of value. GBPR has a โno value limitโ and therefore should be used for all non-commercial, non business related entries regardless of value That's interesting, thank you.
I did notice that the EORI application form asks you to agree that "the goods you're sending are intended for a commercial sale or for a commercial/promotional activity as part of your business", which isn't really the case here, so this does seem more applicable.
Out of interest, were you going through this process when trying to export something with FL, and were they happy to accept this advice?

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by Deleted on Oct 31, 2018 11:41:38 GMT 1, I've sent items from UK to USA in the past. I have never been asked for an EORI number. This must be something odd that FL insist on. I would use a different courier if I was you. There's plenty to choose from.

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by k2 on Oct 31, 2018 12:24:48 GMT 1, FL use DHL. If you book directly through dhl do you get asked? It's not me arranging the shipping, but the comms from FL were that it was a requirement both from FedEx and DHL. Not sure if it relates to the value, but it does seem a bit unnecessary. HMRC confirmed to me that the EORI number isn't intended or needed for this purpose.
I'm not particularly concerned about applying for or using the number - the sale won't cause my any capital gain issues, just feels like a slightly pointless exercise really.

EORI Number for shipping outside of EU, by racket on Oct 31, 2018 12:35:15 GMT 1, Seems a lot of mixed Info. FL quoted a threshold but when I spoke to hmrc (who said it was needed), said that threshold sounded like their (FL) internal one.
