Popular artists that I just don't get...., by nandaman on Feb 9, 2017 23:40:17 GMT 1, So, I understand that art is subjective and different strokes for different folks and all that. I certainly like a lot of artists that others do not as well. I just don't get the infatuation with Kaws. I really don't like...well...anything of Kaws and I can't see the appeal. Some artists I don't like, but I get why some people do. Like Stik. Don't care for the art, and cannot believe it is so pricey, but understand the simplicity of the images, I suppose. Same with Os Gemeos.
Anyways, what other super popular artists do other people just not get? Can someone explain the world-wide love of Kaws to me?

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by matp on Feb 9, 2017 23:53:49 GMT 1, I think you've answered your question in the first line! Kaws has been doing his thing for a long time, starting out with illegal graffiti and then did the Ad disruption backed by various companies. As with many well known artists, his stuff took a while to sell out at first. Now people have made quite a bit of money on it because of the demand to get the original bits. But, as you say, theres probably just as many people who don't like his stuff, as there is who love it!

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by Nick Flatt on Feb 10, 2017 0:03:08 GMT 1, ROA had a show a couple of months after one of my shows in San Francisco, and I hadn't heard of him at the time. It was just a bunch of black and white animals painted on boxes. I really thought it was kinda wack when I was in the gallery. Didn't look any further into it, then I moved to Berlin a few years later and saw his giant murals, and was like, "oh,s**t, that's why people love this guy." Absolutely stunning in person. Sometimes it just takes seeing what they do in their natural environments. I felt the same way when I saw Stick murals in London.

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by NYart on Feb 10, 2017 2:39:30 GMT 1, I'm in the same boat as you with Stik, I get that people enjoy the simplicity but it just doesn't do it for me. I feel it's just too simple and lacks emotion. On the other hand I came across another minimalist artist named Maens that I really do enjoy. He adds just enough more to his work that brings it to life for me. I'd be interested if he does anything for you too.

I agree with some of the above comments as well, for sure some things need to be seen on the street, in situ, vs on-line or in print format. Some artists don't translate well off the street. For example - I love DalEast, and I have some of his prints, but I think they are much better in murals when seen in the flesh.

You obviously don't care for chevrier, cause you don't even care for her first name.

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by nandaman on Feb 10, 2017 14:48:24 GMT 1, I like Kunstrasen stuff, for the most part. I think I was drawn, like many, to his fencer series and interesting use of the canvas - which Phil continues with the guy hanging from the torn canvas. A fresh way to look at the canvas.
I think Whatson does not SAY a lot with his art, but people like it because it's bright, brash, and bold. I really like some of his work (En Pointe is amazing in the flesh), but some misses the mark for me.
I don't love Sanda Chevrier, but see why people do. I'm just not into comics, but she has great skill and her images really pop off the paper.
I LOVE Connor Harrington, but sadly do not own any of his works. I'd reallllly like to get an original study piece like Sundowner recently purchased (as seen on the recent art buy topic). Maybe one day if I save my pennies.

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by Deleted on Feb 10, 2017 15:30:41 GMT 1, Harland Miller, but I guess it's a British or American thing? To me it's just random book covers with a slightly provocative title.

And rarely does anyone starting these threads ever do ANY research or ANY critical thinking first, which is surprising if one wishes to start a meaningful art discussion.
Leaving these types of threads to be the monthly hey the gang's all here circle jerk that they are.

Popular artists that I just don't get...., by Philpenn on Feb 10, 2017 18:00:18 GMT 1, I feel like these threads are often started not because the person "doesn't get" the artist, but because of envy for maybe missing the train back before it was out of sight. Obviously not every time though. I have on multiple occasions had someone who either started, or piled onto an I don't get KAWS thread then ax me for help scoring something/telling the difference between legit and bootleg at a later date. Mayhaps I'm just salty that an artist I'm clearly a fan of is the topic of these threads 9 out of 10 times.
