Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by Harveyn on Mar 31, 2017 22:34:39 GMT 1, I have had one seriously bad month when it comes to art purchases. I have to admit that personal issues with a close family member's funeral has not helped my mood but in a strange way that event has made me think that sitting back silently and turning the other cheek only gets the 2nd cheek slapped!!!
So if you want a rant then this is your thread. My preference is no specific's.
How many times have you bitten your tongue when you knew that exactly the opposite response was appropriate.
My rant just happens to be about purchases or communications I have had directly with artists or their studios as opposed to their galleries. So we all know the potential cost benefit in dealing with an artist direct but are there any pitfalls?
So I contacted an artist expressing an interest in their work. They responded fairly quickly saying they had a few works to show me and subsequently sent me 5 attachments. All good so far. I managed to open 3 of 5 attachments of which one was of interest. I politely responded stating that I could not open 2 of the 5 attachments they sent me and could they please try to resend them.
The response "Actually if you don't see anything in the three pictures you like I'm sure there's nothing in the five pictures sorry"
All I know is if I ran my business like this I would not have one.
So if you just want to rant and not necessarily look for support or contradiction this is your thread.

Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by ca on Mar 31, 2017 22:47:39 GMT 1, I was about to pull the trigger on a framed piece which had been sitting at a gallery in Berlin for more than a year. I had couple emails exchange with the gallery about shipping (I'm in Canada) and all that trying to figure out the logistic (large piece) and asked for couple days to make a decision. They said fine.
Next thing I know, they send me an email in the middle of the night (my time) telling me I have couple hours to confirm (on a Saturday) before they free the piece for other customers. Was sleeping, I wake up check my email see the first warning and guess what, they sold the bloody thing to someone else.

Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by Deleted on Mar 31, 2017 22:56:02 GMT 1, I found that quite funny Neil.
I love a bit of preciousness from an artist
maybe they were stoned and couldn't be arsed?
Its odd though, who if given a choice of 5 things, wouldn't want to see all 5 before making a decision

ny biggest pet peeve is some galleries being shocked I don't want just any piece by an artist ... but actually... wait for it ... a piece I like!
Oh and telling you if you want the piece you like you'll have to buy a couple of pieces by our other artists to secure it

Now you have hit on my second issue this month. Not a gallery but an artist. But the same issue that you might just not want to buy any piece by the said artist you have expressed an interest in.
So I spent two weeks reviewing several options the artist offered me from their studio. Whilst slightly cheaper than the gallery prices still a spend of ยฃ5k. I remained in constant contact. Also I have to add I went directly to the artist in the first place as several of their primary galleries had offered me the same works at different prices.
Anyway I eventually explained that whilst two (which I named) were very close to a yes that with the pending holiday period (Christmas) I felt it best to leave it until the new year. I then sent images of works previously sold that ticked every box whilst at the same time expressing that the two particular works I had highlighted were very close to what I was after.
Anyway 3 weeks later I went back stating that having lived with the image I was indeed interested in purchasing one particular work previously offered. A work that had been produced several years earlier, shown and not sold.
The answer was short and abrupt. You can deal with my gallery form this point forward!!! In other words how dare you not accept the first work offered immediately and how dare you be slightly indecisive in spending 4 weeks considering which work might be right.

It took 4 weeks to get a picture of a print that was framed on the wall of one gallery ... they were too busy to take the picture ... and when I finally received the pic the print was damaged loads - hmmmm I wonder if that's why they didn't want to send the pic? And kept pushing me to buy with no pic???

Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by nex on Mar 31, 2017 23:32:55 GMT 1, What a weird response. This is actually one of the reasons some artists need gallery representation. They don't quite "get" customer service, building relationships, and a fair amt of them are a bit on the crazy side.
Plenty of gallery's are fucking clueless too and unfortunately unfettered adulation here doesn't help ...

Don't let work get you down fella.. I took on a career change and a lot more money, I am a year in and I should be stressed more in work but I'm not not going to fall in that trap. Think it's annoying the higher level above me but fuck them! I told my wife I might pack it all in and do a barista course (I'm a coffee snob), get a coffee van for the mornings and do my football coaching badges in the afternoons and coach kids.. I have been trying to write a book also but it's hard finding the time with kids.. you must have a book in you coach? 'The rise and rise of urban art' by coach..

I did my coaching badges and coached kids football from under 9 through to under 16. That was fulfilling, but time consuming. Parents were the only down side (well, just a few of them to be fair). The real job is a must at the moment with the eldest at uni and the youngest about to start a foundation course. Once they are done with secondary education, I'm drop out again. That's the plan.

Did you buy the piece? I couldn't hand over my money after a response like that. Absolutely not. But I did buy a work by the artist form a different gallery several months later. But as Nex said it does effect how you feel about an artist.

Totally agree, I could not buy any work from an artist if I didn't like them as a person. Retna for example, if I had owned any of his pieces, they would have been moved on swiftly.

Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Apr 1, 2017 0:30:25 GMT 1, Don't let work get you down fella.. I took on a career change and a lot more money, I am a year in and I should be stressed more in work but I'm not not going to fall in that trap. Think it's annoying the higher level above me but f**kthem!
Sounds like a good plan coach..and yes in the U.K. The parents can be a nightmare. Not sure about over here in OZ, I think it's less full on. My boy is 2 yrs old in may and I am already forcing him to kick with both feet

And black apple always a pleasure too.

Rant Thread: Well F*ck Me Pink, by Cardiff on Apr 1, 2017 1:29:03 GMT 1, Nice venting thread Neil!
It will be interesting to see if things change if/when the economy takes a dive again. I've been spending a lot of time in Vegas lately and it's no surprise that Vegas is thriving and everything is really targeted at sucking every cent out of big spenders (bottle service, VIP seating, high dollar room rates/clubs/drinks/conferences/shows/etc.). I will be interested to see how Vegas does when all the "fun money" budgets run dry...apparently no one remembers the $70 rooms at the Wynn that included $100 of chips...that was 10 years ago.
What happens to galleries when the "fun money" dries up for 99% of the art buying population? I wonder if the non-response rates will be as high?
