Using Collection for Art Show , by daveart on Jun 24, 2017 23:54:28 GMT 1, Hi all, I have been around this forum for a good while and have done many purchases, sales, etc and also had the great fortune to meet some people at shows etc. Five years ago I started doing an annual show with my collection at a local gallery that is in a public Social Club. The club is in an inner city ( for our somewhat small city that isn't saying a lot ) area and focuses on programming ranging from wellness classes to cooking classes and everything in between. They have a gallery as well that predominantly shows local artwork and shows from local schools, etc. So, I do a show in their gallery to try to bring a bunch of people down and give exposure to all the other programming and also - have some fun - drink some beer etc. etc. Anyway, its stressful. expensive. etc. risky even. but.. I have found it rewarding and i have had some great conversations with people about the art. the artists, etc. This year i really focused part of the show on issues covered by urban art and had little informational sheets about the art and the artists. I also had a wall of more fun art - Brainwash - so that the whole thing didn't get too preachy. Fairey - We the People for immigration. Swoon Thalassa for environment. Swoon Portrait of Silvia Elena ( a really touching/sad back story) for issues about violence towards women.
Anyway, that's the story. thanks for reading.. and here are pictures of the show. Most taken without people- just one with a person in it so you get a sense of scale on that one. its a big beautiful Swoon....
I think these show most of the views.. i hope you enjoy.. many thanks to people on this forum that have provided input and help over the years. I am truly interested in the art, the back story of the pieces, and the social commentary of the whole scene.
**and ... for the most part .. not for sale **
ok, here we go..
We the People - and i got some newspapers from the day they were published

You got balls of steel putting those in a local social club though. I wouldn't sleep for a week.

Using Collection for Art Show , by daveart on Jun 26, 2017 14:08:54 GMT 1, Thank you all. Sharing the art is really what this is all about. We are in a mid size midwest USA town and it is really kind of odd the number of people that have really never heard of Banksy, Brainwash, Swoon, Fairey.. so i get a lot of "what is this?" and that is kind of fun. And then you get another group come through and someone is practically crazy with excitement taking pictures and selfies and jumping around like "oh my God i cant believe this is here !!" and that is fun too. The show is all packed up now. I pay some art installers from the local art museum to come help and man they take it very seriously which is such a pleasure.
I'll get over the cost and hassle by next May just in time to do it all again..

Using Collection for Art Show , by daveart on Jun 26, 2017 14:29:28 GMT 1, wow. that swoon piece is incredible. could you share some info on it? The Swoon is an original piece based on the thalassa image. Thalassa is Swoon's representation of the goddess of the ocean ? something like that . I believe the image was first used by her in a commissioned installation she did for the New Orleans Museum of Art. It was in part inspired by the deep water horizon oil spill .. This piece is called Colored Red Sea Horses - and is massive at almost 80 inches framed.

LOVE your collection and always enjoy looking at your Instagram.

Using Collection for Art Show , by Drymounted on Jun 26, 2017 22:04:07 GMT 1, Very inspiring! I've considered doing the same out here in Las Vegas, but the logistics have always held me back. It's an amazing thing when people who wouldn't normally care about art, take an interest. I'm sure you've made the day of many people! Bravo.

Yeah, right !!! I wish
Banksy is world famous in UK. Pretty sure the average guy in Holland or Germany has never heard of him. Let alone any other artist.

Using Collection for Art Show , by kwatis on Jun 28, 2017 12:55:48 GMT 1, daveart I grew up in SE Iowa (Ottumwa) and am now based in Chicago. This is exactly the thing I would have LOVED to have seen at a younger age. Des Moines has a thriving art scene, though it is rooted in more the contemporary and modern realm, definitely less urban/street art. You are opening up the minds and potentially the creativity of some that may not get to be exposed to this until later in life. Kudo's to you and keep up the great work!
