To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Gangsta Nola on Jul 10, 2017 22:05:53 GMT 1, Hi all
Looking for some advice, as the title suggests, I have a signed pink Banksy Gangsta Rat that I had framed by John Jones of London a year or so ago. Unfortunately, it looks like I may have to part with him, and I was wondering what people's thoughts were on it being framed/unframed ?
Obviously, its by a reputable framing establishment etc but, as stated, looking for guidance.
Many thanks

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by NYart on Jul 10, 2017 23:18:55 GMT 1, While some people may be ok with buying a framed print if they trust the framer, that doesn't assure the buyer there wasn't any damage prior to framing. Just one thing to consider.

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Forbidden Love on Jul 11, 2017 9:32:59 GMT 1, If leave it framed. If it was done by John jones, I'd have no worries buying it personally. After all I'm not gonna be looking at the back. It's to be enjoyed

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Larry David on Jul 11, 2017 13:33:58 GMT 1, I would keep it framed, as long as it is by JJ, Darbyshire, PFG, MFM etc all should be well and it will save a good few hundred to frame it. If properly done and the buyer wants to see the print it should be easily reversible.
Downside of framed is appeal to collection only / local market, but for a valuable print I always prefer a face to face.

You can add Pauli frames to the list. Excellent framer.

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Deleted on Jul 11, 2017 13:55:20 GMT 1, Leave it framed until you get near a sale, I wouldn't unframe until it became make or break for a sale. Do you have any pictures of the back of the print prior to framing ? If so and the fact that it was framed by JJ then I'd say this would improve your chances of a sale without removing from frame.
As a buyer it wouldn't bother me and my two costliest purchases were framed by Pauli and JJ, and I have no idea of the condition on the back of either print but not all buyers would take this approach.

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Quinnster on Jul 12, 2017 8:19:51 GMT 1, Seeing as most Banksy buyers buy them to put under the bed in folder you may be limiting your market....
At least if you leave it framed it will go to someone who will put it on the wall and enjoy it๐

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by Poster Bob on Jul 12, 2017 10:12:04 GMT 1, You always unframe the print because who framed it doesn't tell you anything about what condition the print was in before it was framed. It could be skinned to all hell and covered with acidic tape inside of a very expensive frame. That said, most prints are bought by galleries and they are in general, so unprofessional that they sell framed work as is, so they won't care.

To unframe or not, that is the question !, by andyroo0312 on Jul 12, 2017 12:09:09 GMT 1, I have bought framed prints supposedly framed by the best in the business but once deframed I found it not to be the case. I personally would never ever buy a framed print with out seeing what's behind it... on a side note any good framer would not use anything other than mulberry paper or corner hinges which makes deframing a job a 10yr old could do. Would you sleep with someone without seeing them naked? No of course not, who knows what they could be hiding under that corset and wonder bra. It's always a good idea to know what's going on back to front regardless of what it is, I will assure you it will help you Make a much more informed decision.

I might have preferred to have not seen some of the people I've slept with naked in hindsight actually.
2.) Linco does now make a very good archival tape that acts essentially just like mulburry paper and hand mixed wheat paste without the need for the mixing of paste. I have seen this removed just as easily as Japanese hinges, just a bit of water to release the hinge with no residue left behind.
It has to be the water activated adhesive and not their standard archival tape which essentially turns the gum into a hardened plastic that is difficult to remove.
