Artist Progress > Street Art > Urban Art > Contemporary Art, by Daniel Silk on Aug 5, 2017 12:49:38 GMT 1, Artist Progress > Street Art > Urban Art > Contemporary Art >
Over the years it feels many artists start of in Street Art and have progressed to Urban Art by producing print editions, gallery shows and becoming professional full time artists. And then some have then progressed further into what might be described as Contemporary Art, signing up contracts with posh galleries and having a more controlled marketing and media.
I get the impression that some might have actually made a mistake with the progress in their careers as they have sort of left their fan base behind, pricing themselves out of reach in search of what they might see as the higher spending Contemporary Art collectors. But is that scene a bit risky? I mean have they left behind their true fans and actually are selling less art now than before.
What do you think?

Micallef was never a street artist or even urban.

Yeah, some I guess have moved from more Contemporary Galleries to Urban, due to the popularity of the scene and possibly a better chance of selling print editions.

If Dolk comes back to do a street art print within a year or two, I think we will have our answer Dolk has incredible potential! I really think he could easily be bigger than Banksy with the right releases and shows. All just depends what he wants to do.

Didn't he say a few months ago that his future is in the contemporary stuff and not stencils? It seems quite a few artists have over the years distanced themselves from the urban art scene and look at it as a stepping stone to potentially bigger and more mainstream respectability.

Yeah, like the subject of this thread, I'm questioning is it a mistake to think moving towards contemporary art is progress? When you see big name contemporary artists struggling to sell stuff and gallery shows getting little media interest, while the big name Urban and Street artists can still do a print releases that sell out in seconds and appear to be more popular with the public.

He did say his future was contemporary, but he would not close the door completely on stencils. Question is if the going gets rough in the contemporary world..will he be back here?
