Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by foamywax on Aug 26, 2017 13:55:52 GMT 1, Hello im not sure if this is the right place to ask for advice on selling an item but here goes... 20 years ago i was sent a decorated envelope with 2 pictures inside decorated from french artists pierre et gilles. I had sent them a really beautiful gold christmas card with the virgin mary because i was a fan and i knew they collected them. I was stunned when i received the envelope with pictures. I have no idea where i could sell this as it isn't one of their photo/paintings but i was told that it may have some value as they never send items to fans. Any help would be appreciated

Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by Happy Shopper on Aug 27, 2017 9:50:47 GMT 1, I don't know anything about those pieces, but they don't look unique to me. They just look like "Christmas cards" that they sent out that year. Maybe an auction house could give you an idea of value.

Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by foamywax on Aug 27, 2017 11:54:14 GMT 1, They may not look unique to you but the two prints that are signed are two of their photo/paintings from 1995 and the envelope has been decorated by the artist as well. If banksy decorated an envelope that he had sent out it would be considered a piece of art and unique as well. A large photo that has been hand painted by pierre et gilles goes for over 100,000 pounds.

Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by Happy Shopper on Aug 27, 2017 14:36:14 GMT 1, It's just a heart and some signatures... Not exactly "hand painted" or something like that. I imagine they sent these to all their friends, family and collectors that year. They just look like signed Christmas and New Year cards... Might still be valuable, but I doubt these are the only ones.

My first question would be to ask whether you really need to sell these pieces.
Since they're personal to you, direct from the artists, it seems a shame to part with them for some nominal amount unless forced to do so for financial reasons. They may also be more valuable to you than to anyone else, when taking into account their history and sentimental considerations.
_________
The market for Pierre et Gilles is relatively niche and largely French. Unsurprisingly, they have a significant and loyal gay fanbase, but their knowingly kitsch work never attained very broad crossover appeal.
In general terms, I sense the duo's current collectors are motivated less by a belief in their relevance in today's contemporary art scene, than by nostalgia โ for the days of Les Rita Mitsouko, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Betty Blue, Subway, Jean-Paul Gaultier when he was l'enfant terrible of the fashion world, and fun adverts by Jean-Paul Goude.
That said, it was a pleasure to see work by Pierre et Gilles at the Richard Wilson RA-coordinated Summer Exhibition 2016 at the Royal Academy โ alongside the likes of Gilbert & George, Bernd & Hilla Becher, and Jake & Dinos Chapman. The focus of that show was on artistic duos. Pierre et Gilles' entry, Marie-Antoinette: Le hameau de la Reine (featuring Zahia Dehar), was actually chosen for the cover of the exhibition catalogue.
_________
If you decide to sell, my advice would be to research and contact Paris auction houses, especially those (i) with some expertise in contemporary art and (ii) who are also open to selling ephemera.
Separately, you may wish to gauge whether any interest exists with online platforms like artnet and Paddle8.
Although I suspect it unlikely, perhaps a dealer in Pierre et Gilles might accept your pieces on consignment. Find them online through Google.
_________
As a side note, that stamp by Louis Briat (Marianne du Bicentenaire), selected in 1989 and first released in 1990, is one of my favourite depictions of La Marianne on a French postage stamp.

I agree! This is why I keep coming back to this forum. There are some people that has a lot of knowledge and is willing to share it. Sometimes it can be a little scary posting on this forum because because if you write/ask something considered a little "stupid" some jump all over you or start making fun of you. I hope members like Met keep posting and answering posts:)

Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by foamywax on Aug 27, 2017 20:17:15 GMT 1, Thankyou met ! I don't think that the work of pierre et gilles has a bigger market in France but i see what you mean. I had read recently that their work raised more than a million dollars at an auction house in london. The envelope and prints that they sent me 20 years ago would appeal to someone who is a fan and cannot afford a gallery piece. Sending these items to a fan is not something they do often obviously i have heard of fans trying to contact them to no avail.

Help or advice on selling item from pierre et gilles, by Pattycakes on Aug 28, 2017 19:43:14 GMT 1, They are worth around ยฃ1000 each or there abouts. They are indeed Christmas Cards it's quite common for most artist's to send hand made ones out each year. If you need help selling them PM me and I'll point you in the right direction. Met is right the market is Niche and Auction is the right direction, that said I'd avoid Paris for a few reasons - which i am not going to go into here.
