Reasonable commission pricing, by artofbalt on Sept 25, 2017 1:43:18 GMT 1, Before everyone says its artist dependent I want to make it clear i mean reasonable pricing in reference to the cost of their other originals.
I contacted one of my favorite artist's gallery about a commission piece.
I was quoted twice what his canvases were priced at the last show.
Thats not normal is it?
Is this the gallery taking advantage?
Please,your input is appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Also I would prefer to not name the artist as I dont think he had any input on the pricing.

Reasonable commission pricing, by mose on Sept 25, 2017 1:54:52 GMT 1, I've commissioned a few pieces over the years(Shepard Fairey, Jose Parla, Nick Darmstaedter).
Fairey was a specific image. It was direct through his studio(no gallery middleman) and was about 33% less than retail at that time(2007). He had accepted an image and then changed his mind. We agreed on a new image and, just being very, very cool, he doubled the size of the canvas for free.
Parla was direct through him, specific size/substrate, and was priced about 1/2 of then-retail(which had risen dramatically in a short period of time, so he locked me in at price at first contact, even though payment was about 6 months later). This was also 2007.
Darmstaedter was specific size and was about 10% below gallery retail. I never spoke to him, rather purchasing via The Still House Group in 2012.
Without more context, my initial reaction was that what you are being quoted was a 'go away, don't bother us' price. Something they don't want to do, but if you will pay through the nose they will indulge you.
Personally, I wouldn't see any reason to involve a gallery in a commission. Most artists are more than willing to work deals/sell out of their studio.
