Early or Late Banksy?, by Rouen Cathedral on Dec 20, 2017 19:07:41 GMT 1, Theres always the debate for the better version of an athlete. Now letโs do it for the artist.
Who do you take?
Early Banksy- small scale, running around in the dark of night, one person - maybe a few, painting walls, rebelling against the establishement, funnier?, releasing prints
Late Banksy- large scale, huge projects, socially conscious, huge brand with large amount of people, rich, no prints, popular, world wide icon,
Etc etc.
Iโll let the banksy scholars chime in with when they think the periods for each began/ ended. Maybe thereโs a middle banksy period?
Either way. Who do you have? Who was better?

Sure just like arguing if pele was greater then Messi. Or is #8 Kobe is better then #24 Kobe.
Those discussions happen all the time and can be fun.
Maybe itโs you who needs to get a life if you canโt have fun with a little thought excercise...

Polls still open! Early Banksy with a big early lead.
Would be interesting to hear some reasons for selection!

Early or Late Banksy?, by moron on Dec 22, 2017 22:07:32 GMT 1, I think early Banksy passed under the radar for many.
What amazes me is Blek. He was painting stencilled graffiti on walls around Paris for decades avoiding the police and with possibilty of being arrested. Bleks the man.

Early or Late Banksy?, by Viking Surfer on Dec 23, 2017 0:55:15 GMT 1, In terms of prints - it's tough between the rawness of the early prints and the sublime detail of the latter.
I think it's all part of a journey and I've enjoyed his journey from start to finish -unlike the occasional artist or musician who goes off the boil, I've enjoyed and continue to enjoy what Banksy creates.

He was painting stencilled graffiti on walls around Paris for decades avoiding the police and with possibilty of being arrested. Bleks the man. What's also amazing is he had zero progression, innovation since then and not much of a statement behind it all either. There's a reason his drops go largely unsold. Props for an early start and inspiring, absolutely ... But look at his releases, just horrible and tough to imagine these on any wall. Seeing him hobble on the "Father of Banksy" crutch year after year is just embarrassing as well. B has given him credit countless times and per his IG he actually throws a few gifts his way as well.

The problem is no one gives blek credit. Theyโve moved on and itโs left him trying y do new things which yes have been pretty poor.

Early or Late Banksy?, by amsterdam9697 on Dec 23, 2017 9:56:33 GMT 1, Honestly, CRASS and train stencils were as important in the evolution of Banksy's early style as Blek. Dude gets plenty of credit but, as mentioned, the whole 'Father of Banksy' has run it's course and in the interim, his work has been boring at best.

Early or Late Banksy?, by moron on Dec 23, 2017 16:43:28 GMT 1, Blek made great art before this political correctness take offence at everything culture rot set in. Nowadays to be able to sell anything the image has to appeal to the left wing virtue signalling brigade. Probably why Blek makes safe cheesy images now which won't get taken down from walls by angry feminist students in the near future. There would be no Banksy if it wasn't for Blek. I don't belive Del Naja was the first grafiti urban artists in the UK or that Banksy did not copy Blek. banksy's early anarchist period seemed to be to make a joke about Paris Hiltons CD's and fame mixed with some Blek like stencils on walls. Dismaland used bits of staging from Glastonbury and the burning Man Festival. Some dark humour mocking the poor and the media attention of Lady Di. Lazarides also had a plan to create some similar dismal funfair in London. The Walled Off is a good idea so far.

Boring and crass, but funny in a 'look at Adolph's funny little 'stache' kinda way. Show me anything GREAT from Blek and I might have a change of heart...

You needed one of those free AOL cds to access the internet back in the olden days. It was great stumbling across a Banksy piece in the early hours of the morning. Nothing better than looking at this work of art while trying to eat a kebab and flag down a taxi.

Very touchy it seems. I'm far from a neocon plus your Adolph Hitler jibe is no doubt taken from your antifa manual on how to respond when you have nothing to say.
Blek made a lot of great art on the streets. His beggar and his checkpoint adopted by other artists including Banksy. His recent releases do nothing for me, neither do many releases by Banksy which are gimmicky to say the least.
