Best way to ship from USA to UK, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 23, 2018 18:41:47 GMT 1, I’m sure there is a thread somewhere but I couldn’t find it.
What’s the best way to ship an item with insurance with a value between like $1k - $2K?
Any tips or tricks?

Best way to ship from USA to UK, by John The Badgers on Feb 23, 2018 20:19:59 GMT 1, We ship at work all over the place, and use a number of companies. From the US to UK, would always go for DHL, they seem to have a slick set up? We use MyDHL, which is easy to operate. Hope this helps.

Best way to ship from USA to UK, by mose on Feb 23, 2018 22:23:26 GMT 1, I find USPS the best/cheapest for US-to-UK.
Others have different experiences, and I'm sure some will share and I encourage them to, but I have found insuring art via one of the major carriers(not an art specific service) to be worthless as they will take your money and disallow your claim later on because the fine print says 'no art'.
I prefer to spend more money up-front on good packing materials, such as Yazoo Mills tubes or PVC pipe tubes, as opposed to taking out insurance. Others disagree.
A quick pricing example. I shipped a 24 lb. box of sneakers from the US to Germany. USPS was about $110. Fedex quoted $600.

I used global priority.
And I used a word that avoids all of these and they don’t have leg to stand on 😉
Think about it 😏

Just because they sell you insurance, doesn't mean you're covered.

Best way to ship from USA to UK, by jp on Feb 24, 2018 2:40:58 GMT 1, I found this but I have not used it. It sounds...expensive.
customcritical.fedex.com/us/services/market-industry/art.shtml
edit: This article www.surfacedesign.org/hot-tips-on-shipping-your-artwork/
has some good tips and actually mentions the customcritical Fedex service I linked to above. They have this to say about insurance for art:
INSURANCE AND LOSS
Advice - based on past experience - on shipping from coordinator of SDA Members' Exhibition 2011 at Confluence conference in Minneapolis. Most of the artists consulted for this article considered shipping artwork a calculated risk. We insure things – and then hope for the best.
A FedEx clerk recently wanted to open a box for inspection because I’d valued the contents at $500. I didn’t want my careful packing disturbed – plus, there was nothing inside to validate worth – so I said “Cross out the value” and crossed my fingers. Like most packages, that one reached its destination, but inevitably some don’t, and disappear forever.
UPS insures art up to $50,000, while the ceiling for FedEx is only $1000, regardless of actual value.
We can claim whatever amount we want, but collecting insurance is reality-based.
All insurers require evidence to confirm the value of artwork beyond the cost of materials from which it was made. Claims are usually honored if a piece was sold and the artist has a receipt for the sale, or if the artwork had been appraised and documented by a certified professional.
In an unusual case, UPS fully reimbursed an artist whose package was lost en route to a gallery when she produced a copy of the itemized invoice listing prices for the contents, and stated that she could remake the artwork.

Even if it’s art, it’s all in the wording, if it’s a sculpture, don’t call it that
It’s that easy .

Best way to ship from USA to UK, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 26, 2018 15:10:45 GMT 1, It appears UPS can be insured up to 50 k as mentioned above. I don't see any restrictions on the terms but maybe I'm missing it...
www.ups.com/assets/resources/media/en_US/terms_service_us.pdf
Not the cheapest method of shipping but appears it actually has coverage.
