Tagging/vandalizing street art, by Rouen Cathedral on Jul 12, 2018 11:41:45 GMT 1, Was wondering what some people's thoughts were on this. Seems it's always debated some when a new banksy pops up and people start ruining it.
So here's the question. Is tagging/vandalizing a unauthorized street art work vs an authorized mural any different?
I've kind of always been in the camp that an illegal street work being tagged/ vandalized is just part of the scene and life of a street work. Does it being an authorized work on a public wall somewhere different? Or does it not matter of the work was autorized or or commissioned? It's still street art.

Tagging/vandalizing street art, by chr1s on Jul 12, 2018 14:27:18 GMT 1, I don't believe tagging (vandalizing) a commissioned work should ever be done. Just because the work is a mural and the public has unsupervised access to the work, does not give anyone the right to paint over it or vandalize it. How about a public sculpture.....if someone is commissioned to produce a sculpture that is displayed in public, I would never go paint on it or take a hammer to it, or chop a head/limb off the sculpture. If it's a commissioned work it's off limits to others to alter. It's no different than a piece hanging in a gallery or a museum.
Illegal or non-commissioned works on the other hand are meant to be ephemeral. I hate to see beautiful pieces get painted over or tagged. But when an artist puts up an illegal work they do it with the understanding that it won't last and that others will in all likelihood paint over it.

I understand this argument. I think I agree. But I'm wondering how you classify the commissioned work. Is it street art? You compare it to a gallery piece but I think the argument could be made that it's not. If it's street art I think it could be argues that it should be fair game. Whether it's legally there or not is a different question I think.
Guess it comes down to defining street art vs graffiti vs public mural.

Tagging/vandalizing street art, by pollz66 on Jul 12, 2018 15:30:26 GMT 1, Tagging is one of the laziest forms of graffiti. Its bad enough when its on its own but worse when it's over someone else's piece.

Without tagging you probably wouldn't have graffiti or street art. Tags are the best and are the pure essence of graffiti. Shy,who cares if it's a Banksy.I'm sure he would rather his work gone over than some person covering it with Perspex.

Tagging/vandalizing street art, by moron on Jul 29, 2018 17:21:32 GMT 1, people who put up street art illegaly, should accept it if it gets tagged, defaced or painted over. Banksy stencils are always improved when they are tagged or graffed as they merge into the realms of vandalism rather than corporate advertising when they are protected by perspex.
Banksy set a standard when he vandalised Robbo's art so for me he is fair game.
If I walked down the street and came across a Banksy or any other stencil, personally I wouldn't tag it and it wouldn't make any difference to me what happens to it in the end. left there, sold by the property owner, or painted over.

I agree....you've only got to look at why tagging developed in the states and the importance of being seen all over your city. Not to mention in the ancient world!

In what way do you find tagging to be "lazy"?
Also, you write that tagging is "one of the laziest forms of graffiti". Which other forms of graffiti do you consider "lazy"?

Cool sarcastic response mate!
At the end of the day people are entitled to their own opinions.
I believe it is down to mindset, those who have roots in graffiti or an understanding or passion about it, understand and get the importance of tagging and bombing. Those who have done it understand the thrill and feeling that comes with it.
It is somewhat ironic on this forum that some people would not really appreciate it as a form considering the overall aesthetic taste.

The rules of tagging these days say fuck it, if its there, hit it. oldschool rules i think were a throwup over a tag or a piece over a throwup.

It's all changed since street artists got to make their art on walls with huge hydraulic lifts and platforms and all done with permission. Basically painting murals and I which add value to a street apart from Fairey that is.
I wouldn't agree with people tagging those street murals apart from Faireys though he is fair game.
Illegal graffiti artists who paint big letters and designs I wouldn't agree with tagging over, I like the sort of outlaw comraderie by those guys.
Banksy is fair game though, he is just media corp these days.

It actually stopped people from venturing down the laneway. So my neighbour and I supplied paint to a local respected artist to do a cover up piece (see photo) Has not been tagged going on 2 years now and people love coming down the laneway. I not a fan of tagging established work

Tagging/vandalizing street art, by Guy Denning on Aug 21, 2018 23:17:07 GMT 1, I had an authorised wall mural bombed with some right-wing bollocks in France once. I didn't care - the happiest thing about it was knowing I'd pissed off a fascist and cost him time and paint.
I'd do the same if I saw nazi shit going up on a wall. And do...
