Tomoo Gokita show in LA, by Express Post on Sept 9, 2018 13:19:11 GMT 1, When it costs under 100k, and you can flip it for triple that, the lines will be long for a while.
Can't say the same for Bast.

Tomoo Gokita show in LA, by shy on Sept 9, 2018 13:20:45 GMT 1, Totally Agree expresspost!
Bast is still a massive bargain. His work is genius but he just don't get that same respect? It's very weird how fickle the market is?

Lately, I feel like we have been overrun by forum trolls and individuals with multiple usernames to create an echo chamber.

Tomoo Gokita show in LA, by Cardiff on Sept 10, 2018 22:42:46 GMT 1, I went Sat night and thought the work was great. That said, the scene was very sterile...no bar, no drinks allowed, 2-3 security guards following you around (in a not so big gallery), etc.. When I inquired about the work a few weeks back, I was told they were only placing pieces in US museums or with top tier US collectors (my interpretation of a nicer way of saying "you are not a tier 1 collector). I'm not bitter...just think the vibe was super elitist and sterile and didn't really match the artist's vibe. Afterwards, my wife and I walked down the street to a no name gallery and walked into a small opening of an artist we'd never heard of and it was buzzing with a bar, DJ and great vibe...interesting how the art world works!

Itโs the same with all super successful artists really. If they hit a certain level they become totally unobtainable.. you either got in early or your chance has gone. Itโs totally elitist but life in general is really. I agree that a lot of galleries seem to love this cold sterile approach.
Iโm far more interested in emerging now... the scene is more fun and if one becomes the next kaws, Tomoo etc I can retire ๐๐

So frickin true! As an example, in a different top end gallery, I agree to buy a six figure painting and they want me to buy other work from other artists that I don't like... it's tit for tat!
Very elitist... some high end galleries pick and choose who is offered what....

Tomoo Gokita show in LA, by Pavoni on Sept 11, 2018 1:14:56 GMT 1, Saw this large Tomoo Gokita painting a few weeks back hanging at this gallery in Kyoto.
Big, no figures, navy/ dk blue paint, but recognizable technique. The paint application was quite thin, but striking from a distance.

Looks to be one on far left in this shot:

Tomoo Gokita show in LA, by shy on Sept 11, 2018 1:17:56 GMT 1, on another note I looked to buy another Jonas wood original and the price more than doubled... it's herd mentality- everybody wants the same pieces from the same "HOT" artists!
I love buying emerging art- but I have storage filled with art that is commercially worth nothing, other than the satisfaction of having supported upstart artists... it's hard to hit on emerging art and it can become a very expensive game.
