Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by eyectopus on Oct 9, 2018 19:45:09 GMT 1, I am interested in seeing if others have had bad experiences in receiving art with some damage from poor handling and packaging?
I reckon at least 20% of the art I received in the last year had some level of damage.
I have received two different prints from different sources shipped flat in very thin card and each was badly damaged. One was from a museum the other direct from an artist.
A print shipped in a tube that was creased and torn at one end from moving about in the tube. It had no kraft paper. Direct from Artist.
A set of prints that must have been in a tube for years as I have been unable to fully flatten them using MDF with weight. Purchased on Ebay.
I have also had some items damaged in the post, although they were well packed.
Am I just unlucky or have other people experienced this also?

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by Charlesworth on Oct 9, 2018 20:14:06 GMT 1, Iโve had two pieces damaged by the courier in the last few months. One was direct from the artist packed flat on a piece of card the same size as the print & put in a padded envelope. It had creases & a dinged corner. The artist didnโt have a replacement so I decided to keep as as I think it will frame out. The other was sent in a decent cardboard tube wrapped in craft paper but was crushed at one end and the print was badly creased. I had noticed the damage when signing for it so I wrote โdamagedโ in the sign box & got the courier to note down it was damaged. I was able to return the print to the buyer for a refund & they claimed through the delivery company.

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by puritog on Oct 9, 2018 20:24:44 GMT 1, Generally my orders arrive fine. There are some exceptions for less expensive stuff, e.g. David Kordanski packing the Jonas Wood posters without any kraft paper. I do have consistently bad experiences buying art books from Amazon. 50% of the books arrive with dings in the corners or scratches, up to a point were I don't buy books from them anymore.

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by eyectopus on Oct 9, 2018 21:05:53 GMT 1, Cheers for the replies. Books are something I have received with damage also. I have had bad luck with vinyl records arriving with the covers creased from poor quality mailing covers.
I often wonder how I would get magazine subscriptions arrive in a plastic bag in perfect condition, but receive other magazines in a reinforced envelope in bits

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by ca on Oct 9, 2018 21:15:08 GMT 1, the last year or so has been incredibly bad for me, it seems there are a lot of private sellers and Galleries (!!!) that don't know how to properly pack a print. Nothing is more frustrating, especially when dealing with entities that you think would have some experience dealing with art. I will never understand it, personally I'm the opposite, my packages tend to be bomb proof

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by Kevin Anderson on Oct 9, 2018 21:25:40 GMT 1, It is very hit or miss with packing. Some inexpensive prints have been sent with incredible packing and some more expensive ones sent with little more than chipboard and packing tape. I identify with CAL, when I send something, I try to go overboard on the packing. That little extra effort can save you headaches from unhappy recipients.

Condition of art from poor handling and packing, by NYart on Oct 9, 2018 22:50:43 GMT 1, I donโt know why itโs difficult for some. I understand out of 150 prints especially consecutively your going to gorilla grip or one or two. But when it comes to no kraft paper, inadequate flat packing, thereโs no excuse.
Donโt even bother flat packing unless your going to use at least MDF. Even triple thick cardboard can still get cut/wet. Tubes need kraft paper, and padding at the ends if the kraft doesnโt fit snug. Canvases a piece of triple thick cardboard or MDF on each side to prevent crushing, bubble wrap and cellophane and your good to go.
There ya go. Things do happen out of individuals control but that there will eliminate 98% of issues.

I have received items packed in cardboard, and people forget some cardboard is made up of membranes in such a way that there are hard and soft bits if you push down on it. Those hard parts dent prints. I opened up a valuable print before and had some nice cross hatched marks purely from some weight being put on the cardboard it was between. Not good.
