Import tax from Oz to UK, by Schrödinger's Chat on Oct 16, 2018 18:13:25 GMT 1, I've just received a letter from parcelforce Import Vat on an item I bought from Oz.
The vat is £7.49 and the handling fee £11.25,a total of £18.74.
The item cost inclusive of p&p was £26.
Seems a lot, and I have never had this before when I've bought other stuff from Oz, even previously from this company. Has anyone else got experience of this?
Anyway, I don't want to pay the £18.74 as to be honest the item is not worth a total cost of £45 (it was barely worth the £26).
What are the consequences of not paying? Obviously, not receiving the item is one consequence. Are they going to hound me for the money?

Import tax from Oz to UK, by hippychick on Oct 16, 2018 19:07:21 GMT 1, If you don't pay the customs fees, it will be returned to sender after 3 weeks or so. A lot of places have clauses in their T&Cs to say that they won't refund if the item is returned to them because of failure to pay customs charges so you will be out of pocket £26.
You could pay and then make a claim for the VAT overcharge (assuming it should have been 20% then you should get £2.29 back, I think) but you won't get the handling fee back. What was the item?

Import tax from Oz to UK, by hoolz on Oct 16, 2018 20:34:46 GMT 1, I was recently charged £14.99 (Import VAT + Royal Mail "Administration Charge") on a $24 item from the US. They charged VAT at £6.99 which would mean that they're taxing at around 38% :-(
Border Force bandits will make a killing when we leave the EU.

Import tax from Oz to UK, by J0NNY on Oct 16, 2018 22:37:49 GMT 1, I accidentally got a £1000 print from Singapore sent to my old house in the uk rather than my new place in Australia, they told me that they have to legally hold it at customs for 28days ( roughly ) before returning to sender, if the bill is not paid.

Thanks Hippychick.
The item was a rather over priced David Shrigley snake toy for my daughter. Over priced at £26,hence my reluctance to throw any more money at it.

Import tax from Oz to UK, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2018 11:15:30 GMT 1, I have had nothing but trouble from Parcelforce in the past. It's interesting to read the reviews on Trustpilot; I've never seen so many negative reviews.
I have heard rumours that if you complain (politely) about the Parcelforce handling fee, they sometimes give a reduction - possibly.

said something along the lines of ...
'it's only going to get worse - you voted for this.. remember'...
meanwhile back at the taxing debate.
aye - pay the man - live and learn..
