Shipping in the US - Question, by acme on Nov 9, 2018 9:17:03 GMT 1, Hello, I just moved to the US and I need to send some tubes within the US and abroad to Europe.
There is no time pressure.
A few prints are worth btw $100-$300 and one is $1.500.
UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS, where should I go, what do members here use? Are there any other companies besides those mentioned?
I got a quote from UPS $65 on a print $100 worth, seems a bit expensive to me.

Shipping in the US - Question, by NYart on Nov 9, 2018 10:28:38 GMT 1, USPS is like $24.50 to the UK insured up to $50. If you want additional insurance it falls into a different category starting at $48. If the lapse in insurance is only $50 Iโd say your better off chancing it.
Fortunately I donโt have any experience to speak from but regardless of which big 4 you go with it seems making a claim isnโt easy anyway. Theyโll say itโs โinadequatelyโ packed if it damaged. Iโve been eyeing a local pack and ship shop for future higher value items. They guarantee insurability so at least it your paying the premium you know your covered.

Shipping in the US - Question, by mose on Nov 9, 2018 11:47:55 GMT 1, Insurance is simply not going to help you. Some carriers notably excluded fine art, including limited edition prints, from insurance coverage. They will still sell you the coverage, but you will be out of luck come time to file a claim. Read the fine print very carefully.
Personally, I skip insurance and ship bomb-proof. I use Yazoo Mills tubes or PVC pipe + end caps (Home Depot or Lowes, make sure to wash the tube in the bathtub first).
Oversees shipping is not cheap, however you do it. That being said, USPS is the cheapest way to go there (usually).
Domestically, I prefer Fedex.

Shipping in the US - Question, by Tobi187 on Nov 9, 2018 12:05:01 GMT 1, Iยดve bought a few prints and posters from US forum members and they shipped with USPS for $24.50. Everything went smooth so far... I also bought from US Galleries and the delivered via Fed-Ex which was super fast, but I don't know the exact prices.

Shipping in the US - Question, by rodgro on Nov 9, 2018 14:33:44 GMT 1, Yikes! That must have been a GIANT tube of UPS quoted you $65. I can typically ship a standard size tube that an 18โ x 24โ would fit in with USPS insured for up to $500 for around $20 (priority 2-3 day). Hope this helps. R

Shipping in the US - Question, by Rouen Cathedral on Nov 9, 2018 17:58:17 GMT 1, I always use USPS. As someone else mentioned insurance is basically useless. If you read fine print they all exclude fine art. With ups and FedEx the insurance cost seems like a lot whenever I've gotten quotes anyway.
Shipping USPS usually is fairly cheap and if it makes you feel better you can add insurance and it's not that expensive. And then just pray that maybe they wouldn't exlcude it of it came to it.

Shipping in the US - Question, by rodgro on Nov 9, 2018 18:32:43 GMT 1, Not sure what the shipping companies consider fine art as Iโve never had a problem with any claims and Iโve had several varying from inexpensive-ish prints to very expensive canvases.

Interesting. Which companies did you successfully get your claims through with?

R UPS is much, much more expensive going overseas than USPS.
I'll give an example. I proxied an order for a friend. I shipped it from New Jersey to Germany and the total weight was 23 pounds. USPS was $125. UPS was quoted at $575.

Hi. Expensive claim was through UPS. Was actually coming from another forum member from Canada to the US. UPS was great to deal with. Offered me 3/4 of value which was about $4000 and I keep the damaged canvas or full payment and they keep the canvas. Inexpensive claims were all through USPS. Hope this helps.

Ha!! I was waiting for someone to ask that I took the 75% as I had already been to my framed to see if the damage could be repaired.

Shipping in the US - Question, by acme on Nov 11, 2018 8:51:30 GMT 1, It's hard to give buyers estimates about shipping in the US. To get some tubes from Home Depot and USPS seems worth a try.
Thank you all, much appreciated.

If you register with USPS, you can go to the website and fill out the paperwork for the package. This will give you the cost beforehand. If it is domestic, you can even use their app to fill in and print labels. It has worked well for me so far.

A UPS Store is a franchise and they charge a premium for using their service.
