Building a collection, by shy on Nov 18, 2018 20:29:34 GMT 1, Lots of great advice. I would add: see as much as possible. On the streets, in galleries, books, online, wherever. The more exposure to different artists and styles the better. and don't be afraid to speak to people and ask questions.
Buying art can be intimidating at first, but it's a great hobby and for some people it can become a career.
I have friends that have made a lot of money buying quality art, sitting on it and reselling years later for profit.
Best of all, you can make many new friends that share the same interests.
Happy hunting!

They may have multiple accounts and post under alias The forum has many good people, but there are some cowards on here that have nothing better to do than sit in their basements in their underwear and post crap and smack. They are losers that wish they had what others have worked hard to attain. Don't let these lowlifes discourage you. The forum is a very good place to interact. Just avoid the rif-raf and low-lifes that have nothing better to do. Wink, Wink
Now now. Name calling. Just repeating what youโve written. Looks kind of ridiculous doesnโt it.

Heโs not bullying you mate. Heโs pointing out things youโve said and have been mocked for. Thatโs also not bullying itโs taking the piss which is fun. If youโre a blagger with little art then you shouldnโt care, if you have everything you say then the last laugh is yours

Building a collection, by shy on Nov 18, 2018 21:25:35 GMT 1, I guess the last laugh is mine... but I don't feel like laughing.
It's not fun being ridiculed, so hence my warning to new collectors, keep your personal info and your collection info confidential.
Whatever you post will be available for the masses.
In the end, it doesn't matter what anyone owns, all that matters is that you enjoy your collection.
Big or small it is good when people support the arts.
Good wishes to all!

My wife and I each have veto power with any new addition. I/we find pursuing this collaboratively far more rewarding on a number of levels. Buy what you both love was sage advice I picked up along the way.
>>>There's no one "must have" "buy at all cost" pieces worth losing sleep over. <<<
Those are the best ones in my experience. The ones that torment you into behaving irrationally, that you obsess and over consider from every point of view. You lose sleep, they own you for a bit because they tug at your soul. Those are the ones I cherish most.

Building a collection, by maven on Nov 20, 2018 19:03:19 GMT 1, Iโm collecting based on my personal connection to the art โ I have a few pieces by more established artists, but my main collection of sculpture and lithographs is from Latin America and Spain. More recently I started collecting street art and I intend to focus on street art from Latin America and Spain. Please let me know any street artists that I should be collecting! I like prints with a connection to the Environment, Human Rights and Religion.

I particularly liked these apple brains which I feel have a certain link to the biblical Garden of Eden and the apple from the tree of knowledge.

The forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden business wasnโt an apple. Genesis makes no mention whatsoever of an apple, only โfruitโ. Latter day religious artists popularised the image of an apple, probably because they were rubbish at painting pomegranates. So let me get this right, its just the apple thats a lie?

Building a collection, by Fast Eddie on Nov 21, 2018 2:10:57 GMT 1, Do not build a collection. It is not about the names of artists you can mention to your dinner guests. And do not hoard canvases in drawers. Build a narrative that you read on the walls of your home or of your office. A narrative that constantly reminds you of the things you find beautiful or uplifting or inspiring. Art can do that. It is one of the few things in life that can, in the split second of a glance, take you to be the person you are supposed to be.
Then you forget. And go post on UAA. But that's ok too.

Building a collection, by dwight on Jan 22, 2019 21:38:58 GMT 1, Don't spend your time trying to find the next Banksy. There isn't going to be one. Have a larger perspective of great art and global art trends. Keep up with the major galleries (Gagosian, Hauser&Wirth, Simon Lee, David Zwirner, Pace, Perrotin) and from where they are signing artists. Find mentors who have collected for many years at a high level. Spend more money on each purchase and make very few purchases.

Building a collection, by pada1 on Jan 23, 2019 15:02:31 GMT 1, I would propose an alternative to the above. Find galleries around your place, where you can meet curators, artists, art lovers and collector. Open your eye to the what's less common and prioritise proximity with the artist better than with instagram. When you start owning what you truly love, you really question your old collecting habits ^^
Easy to write, difficult to follow. A piece of advice I should practice myself more this year.

Building a collection, by Gard on Jan 25, 2019 15:17:52 GMT 1, If you want to build a good collection go and talk to the galleries and start to the buy from the ones you think have an interesting program. After you've bought the work and hung it on your wall they are the people that will continue fighting for more recognition for the artists.
The book mentioned above is a good place to start. Someone once told me that to be a good collector you have to buy more books than art.
