Building a collection, by wappinghigh on Nov 17, 2018 22:50:55 GMT 1, Hi everyone.
First up thanks to everyone for the site and being so helpful in sales
I have bought a couple of things already off a few of you to start a collection: a dran, a Sweet toof, a Paul Insect and one of those banksy "portrait" photo's...
I also have a few things coming from ebay
This site is awesome. You learn very quickly "what's going on" I think... about fakes and price trends etc.
My question is for those who have been collecting several years.
Thinking back, would you have done it differently?
Obviously unless we own a massive warehouse or something wall space quickly becomes a limiting factor..
I plan to get one or two (max) original iconic "once off" pieces - say canvas, some prints then some "others" like sculpture then be done with it...
I don't like to churn.. I am quite particular...Once I like a work of art it stays... I get more out of it that way... art should continue to challenge. If it doesn;t you've bought the wrong piece IMO
So what do other collectors (like me) do with their "overshoot"?
Do you have a flat storage cabinet? Do you hide them away from partners in your garages?
What?!
Thanks for any suggestions on building a collection
Cheers

Health, family and enjoying life come first 👍 Personally I love a select few prints in my collection but wish I saved harder for small originals from my preferred artists.. oh also dont get the wife involved in your decisions, you’ll regret it 😢
Also there’s a few useful threads on here somewhere (you’ll have to search) with plan chests and other storage means for prints. cheers

Building a collection, by pada1 on Nov 18, 2018 1:57:13 GMT 1, Buy first what you can frame (afford to frame, wall space, etc.). I agree about the hype comment above, don't feel the urge to buy because others do. Ask yourself the right questions. Money can be used for many other stuff that will bring you happiness and satisfaction, so don't waste it on what others like or chase!

Building a collection, by wappinghigh on Nov 18, 2018 3:26:43 GMT 1, Sure thanks all..
Got my collecting themes and q's and am sticking to it...
Must be an original work, or if I can't afford that - an early print run Must have huge connection back to the street. Either directly in technique by artist or a connection there somehow... ...so prefer earlier works..'cause that's where it all began right? But most of all must like the art!
Cheers

Building a collection, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2018 10:04:53 GMT 1, I think there's a tendency to buy up lots of fairly cheap stuff rather than one high quality expensive piece.
I would always recommend doing the latter rather than the former.
Buy what you can afford...but buy the best of what you can afford.

Building a collection, by Icesay on Nov 18, 2018 14:01:05 GMT 1, Personally I think it's a tricky one. My taste has changed a lot since I started buying art. As my taste has matured I have bought more abstract work and moved away from the instant gratification that simpler works capture. Still have some classics. I also enjoy the old school british graff artists as they captured a feeling much better than some of the artists that are popular now. I think art should be emotive and couldn't care less what something is 'worth' .

One can get swept up collecting, whether it be art, automobiles, rare watches etc...
There's no one "must have" "buy at all cost" pieces worth losing sleep over.
There's ALWAYS a beautiful new piece of art to buy tomorrow!
Always remember art is easy to buy, but hard to sell!
Go for originals whenever possible over prints. Better to buy quality over quantity.
And most of all buy what you love and have fun collecting.

Building a collection, by cmc on Nov 18, 2018 15:14:44 GMT 1, My tip to any new collector and something I wish someone had said to me at the start is 'quality not quantity' if I add up the amount of money I spent on work that I don't really like anymore I could have bought 3 or 4 of the pieces that I had always wanted.

Also your taste will change as continue collecting, so take your time choosing pieces that blow you away.

Building a collection, by baal on Nov 18, 2018 15:21:18 GMT 1, I wouldn't be dismissive of prints as some people seem to be. I have some fantastic prints on my wall. Just be careful not to get carried away at the beginning. Contact artists personally if possible. Most of them are really friendly and happy to help you where they can.

Building a collection, by mose on Nov 18, 2018 17:25:30 GMT 1, Only buy what you like. If you are going to buy to sell on then I have no advice. And don't believe the hype. I see this and always disagree with it.
We tend to 'like' easy, comfortable, etc. 'Buy what you like' if applied to liquor would have people drinking sugar-sweet hooch all day, not a complex Scotch in sight. Buy what you like = tubes buried in the closet or under the bed once the novelty wears off.
If you want to build a collection that will stay with you and continue to provide enjoyment, IMO, you have to continuously push boundaries in order to develop your tastes in art and to grow as a collector. Find pieces that force you to grow. Many of these you will not 'like' at first, but will come to cherish as you develop. They will continue to enrich your life long after the appeal of easy pieces has worn off.
Remember, the art of tomorrow doesn't look or feel like art today. It tends to make one uncomfortable. We tend to not like that feeling.
Oh, and I always recommend that you should be spending more on books, videos, museum memberships, online or in-person courses (MoMA has some good ones) and travel than you do on art, at least for the first many years. Grow yourself, develop your eye, etc. Invest in yourself before you make investments in art. Investing in yourself guarantees a return.

Building a collection, by kuni on Nov 18, 2018 20:13:12 GMT 1, I pretty much agree with everything that’s been said here. I started collecting prints about 10 years ago. Mostly stuff from 1xRun that caught my eye. That and photography. Of the prints I bought early on, I don’t think any of them are hanging in my house anymore. Actually one but it’s from a friend / artist so it has certain intangible value beyond the image. Point being that my taste has changed and evolved and I look back on my early purchases and the art doesn’t resonate at all. Expect that your tastes will evolve as well and what you like today may not be what you like tomorrow.
Also it’s easy to feel like you need to hop on every release. Resist the urge. Set limits for yourself. There is ALWAYS another “hot” “must have” release on the horizon. This site is great, but it can be overwhelming trying to keep up with all of the releases. I’ve slowed down and really try to ask myself if I’m chasing a release because I really like it or because everyone else is chasing it.

Building a collection, by shy on Nov 18, 2018 20:21:35 GMT 1, better not to discuss what you collect or own, because there are some idiots on the forum that will always be envious and try their best to discredit you Just to recap Damien Hirst - “I have a large collection”, “I have several spot prints” Flore - “I have several originals” Connor Brothers - “I have several originals and prints”, “I have a large collection” Sandra Chevrier - “I have several originals as well as prints” Harland Miller - “I have many pieces”, “I am huge collector of both originals and prints” Bast - “I collect originals” Jonas Wood - “I have a large collection”, “I have an original basketball painting”, “I have a sports print”, “I have lots of sheets of wallpaper” Retna - “I collect originals” Herr Nilson - “I have some originals” David Yarrow - “I collect his photography” African Art - “I have artwork from many artists” Warhol - “I have a large collection” Lichtenstein- “I have a large collection” Ruscha - “I have a large collection” Banksy - “I love and collect his work” Tabby - “I have a sculpture” David Shrigley - “I have many of his prints”, “I have the Counter Editions Set Of 4 prints” Pose - “I have originals” Yes thank you - I hope you enjoy building your collection as well.
And lesson to be learnt, never share what you own on this forum. Better to keep it private.
There are idiots, like the one that posted above, that hide behind keyboards and try to bully others. They may have multiple accounts and post under alias
The forum has many good people, but there are some cowards on here that have nothing better to do than sit in their basements in their underwear and post crap and smack.
They are losers that wish they had what others have worked hard to attain.
Don't let these lowlifes discourage you.
The forum is a very good place to interact.
Just avoid the rif-raf and low-lifes that have nothing better to do.
Wink, Wink

Building a collection, by corbu on Nov 18, 2018 20:23:52 GMT 1, Lots of great advice. I would add: see as much as possible. On the streets, in galleries, books, online, wherever. The more exposure to different artists and styles the better.
