Mausoleum of the Giants Solo Show by Phlegm 15 March – 6 April 2019 Sheffield UK
Sheffield invites you to Mausoleum of the Giants a solo show created by acclaimed artist Phlegm.
Mausoleum of the Giants - a monumental title fitting for a new spectacular sculptural installation showcase by artist Phlegm in his hometown of Sheffield, UK. The artist, Illustrator and cartoonist, who earned worldwide recognition with his intricate, narrative-rich murals painted on carefully selected public or abandoned structures, is continuing his exploration of mediums and scales and this time he’s gone big. After spending the last couple of years working on impossibly small copper engravings and ink drawings, he’s switched to creating larger than life sculptures as physical, 3D versions of his iconic characters.
Five years after his solo showcase, “The Bestiary” in Shoreditch London and two years since he last worked in the city, Sheffield’s adopted son has created work on a new, grander scale. Taking over the architecture with his murals and changing the entire field of view with his visuals, he has produced an incredible, immersive sculptural installation. Massive sculptures occupy halls, corridors and rooms of an abandoned factory with their cumbersome bodies. Mausoleum of the Giants is a thrilling extension of Phlegm’s ongoing efforts to intertwine his surreal and highly imaginative work with existing deteriorating structures.
Sheffield as the stage for this epic showcase was no accident. With local industrial buildings often forming the backdrop for his murals in the city, an old factory complex is the perfect location for presenting such a poetic and personal undertaking and bringing Phlegm's iconic characters to life. Imagined as beings whose life spans over thousands of years, these peaceful beasts have seen rivers erode and mountains change. With their final days coming slowly but surely, the giants are ready for their eternal rest, giving everyone enough time to meet them, mourn them and make peace with their ending.
The Sheffield venue location currently being kept under wraps will be revealed to all week commencing 11th March 2019 via the website www.mausoleumofthegiants.co.uk
The opening weekend takes place on: Friday 15th March from 6pm to 9pm Saturday 16th March 11am – 6pm Sunday 17th March 11am - 5pm
Closed Mondays and Tuesdays the show will then be open to the public Wednesdays 20th March until Saturday 6th April 2019
This looks great! I love this bloke and all that he does. He has a true passion for his work and it shows. I met him some years back in melbourne and he could not have been more welcoming. I wish him all the best.
Shame I can’t make it to the show. If someone could help me out getting a print I would really appericiate it. Will pay cost + shipping have some nice gifts for your trouble like a Pejac a forest mini print and a Jonas Wood voorlinden poster for example
Pretty sure this is available from the show only, giving something back to the local support over the years. The print releases from recent years have been almost impossible to get hold of on the online drop, the majority of them going to the US, and a lot being flipped. Really hoping I can get hold of my first print as I’ve been a fan for years and am from Sheffield , never stood a chance on the recent releases and the secondary marked is usually beyond my means.
There is a bit more information about some things to do in Sheffield on the exhibition’s website, locations of some phlegm murals etc. Anyone getting into the town centre by train there are some good places to visit nearby within a minute or two’s walk.
Good pub in the station (Sheffield Tap) and you should check out the Phlegm artwork outside the The Rutland Arms (good pub too!). The Showroom is a really nice independent cinema with a nice cafe /bar space. The Site Gallery across the road from the Rutland has had a recent massive extension and is a space for contemporary art. Millenium Gallery is also worth a look , some of the Da Vinci drawings are currently on display. The Millenium Gallery has a new cafe/bar owned by Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys, I’ve not been to it yet but gets good reviews for the food and drinks. Millennium galleries leads directly to the winter gardens. Also in town the National Video games archive has recently opened which should be worth a look if you like that sort of thing. Cheap eats to be had in town in the Moor Market , excellent Nepali curry place in there called the Hungry Buddha (veggie thali for £5).
The areas I’d reccomend for food and drinks in the evening would be Kelham Island near the town centre, or Abbeydale Rd/antiques quarter.
Kelham island has good traditional pubs and plenty of nice bars and eateries. Cutlery Works has just opened which is a food hall place with some bars and lots of places to eat. The Fat Cat is my favourite traditional pub in that area, The Shakespeare and The Riverside are also good. The Riverside has a large Phlegm mural in the courtyard.
Alternatively Abbeydale road /Chesterfield Road / Heeley (antiques quarter) is a good area for pubs and has a few decent bars and places to eat. My local pubs The Sheaf and the Brothers Arms are good, plus the Beer Engine on Chesterfield Rd, The Broadfield, and the Picture House on Abbeydale Rd. Lots of choice.
Properly excited about this exhibition! The print announcement is the cherry on the cake too. Never been to Sheffield before. Think that's going to change on the 15th! Thanks for the tips from the locals.
