Try meet the buyer halfway.
If it must be shipped after wrapping it well i always found plywood on the outside is the best way. You can buy it in any hardware store.

I got a plan chest sent from Leeds to bristol for ยฃ67! Just don't go for the first offer. Also you can specify what the item is and how You want it treated. Good luck.

Things get tossed around by couriers all the time. Send the print separately to the frame to make sure it doesn't get damaged by broken glass.

The way I have dealt with this is to open the back and take the glass out. You can then wrap the glass separately. You will need to pack the piece properly as the artwork no longer has the glass in front of it offering a little protection. Hardboard or such like. The buyer can then put the glass back in afterwards and re seal. If the glass gets broken it is easy enough for the buyer to replace it. Again, provided the glass was well packed separately, the broken glass shouldnโt damage the artwork. Obviously I canโt guarantee this will work, and much will depend on how well the piece is packed regardless.

The buyer can get new glass Or better still, just send the print without the frame. Problem solved! After all, it's no problem these days getting things framed up yourself. It probably wouldn't cost much more than the shipping and packaging costs anyway.

Posting: courier , by galaxy01 on Feb 11, 2019 23:17:57 GMT 1, I have packed and sent framed pieces with glass as far as Australia and the US and never had an issue. Tape the glass then protect it front and rear with a 5mm plywood or similar and wrap in multi layered bubblewrap and encase in some strong corrugated cardboard. It is a risk but it always is sending a piece framed with glass. I have used art couriers in the past and a lot of them only package it and send it via regular courier anyway. This happened to me with Flight Logistics. Great company to deal with but they only repackaged the item and sent it via DHL which I was a little disappointed with after paying a premium. DHL will accept artwork valued upto ยฃ5000, anything above this value is considered a prohibited item as far as I am aware. www.dhl.co.uk/en/express/shipping/shipping_advice/prohibited_commodities.html
You need to be careful, DHL insure art for a bit yes. But they will NOT insure Glass items. If your glass cracks a d damages your ยฃ5000 print you will NOT be covered. Always account for the Glass insurance terms when shipping framed work. They will just say no to any claim if they have an excuse to.
Flight Logistics combine couriers with a proper art and glass insurance separately, just DHL and you wont get cover. Flight Logistics provide better insurance.
