Buying Canvas Originals, by cest on Mar 3, 2019 14:35:07 GMT 1, Hi folks,
I'm thinking for 2019 I want to commission my first original piece... Nothing too expensive, and nothing too large. I'm thinking around $5,000-$7500 is my budget for this year. Maybe if this experience goes well I'll stop buying prints as my main art buying focus.
That being said , I've talked to Mark chronic and for 2400 bucks I can get a 36" by 36". He is a couple of months out from delivering.
Looking at CJ Hendry, it's 25k and 9 months, (obviously) outside my price range.
I think Oli Epps is under 5 grand for mall Originals ... But I don't think I'd be able to get one within the next 30 years.
Can you fine folks on the board add other artists who are taking commissions and what the price and time frames would be? Also any negative or positive experiences?
Thanks!

Buying Canvas Originals, by Gard on Mar 3, 2019 15:22:10 GMT 1, Why do you want a commission instead of buying something that exists?
Someone you should look at is Charlie Roberts. I'm doing a show with him in May. golsa.no/artists/charlie-roberts

There's something about a bespoke piece + I have this idea that there would be a greater connection to the artist by presenting a concept and them running with it.

Buying Canvas Originals, by kuni on Mar 3, 2019 18:09:04 GMT 1, I also agree great thread. Iโm looking around for my next canvas so this is very helpful.
I picked up a nice sized commission from Stevie Unknown for under $1k. Pretty sweet deal and a pleasure to work with all the way from across the pond.
Also worked with Euan Roberts Art on a commission for a nice sized canvas which was under $1500. He was great to work with and I love the piece. Itโs easily in my top 3.

Buying Canvas Originals, by sfnyc on Mar 3, 2019 18:17:34 GMT 1, I'm not really into commissions as I prefer to let artists do what they do, unless it is for family related portraits, for which my last commission was from Lee Ellis who did some superb quality work in less than 2 weeks, and for less than most prints you find on sale anywhere (!!!). leeellis.bigcartel.com/

Indeed. Lovely to get a canvas commission from Pahnl. Hereโs one he did for me, a portrait of my son, for me to give to him as a gift. Iโm very fond indeed of this image.

Buying Canvas Originals, by warwolf on Mar 3, 2019 20:20:28 GMT 1, Hi folks, I'm thinking for 2019 I want to commission my first original piece... Nothing too expensive, and nothing too large. I'm thinking around $5,000-$7500 is my budget for this year. Maybe if this experience goes well I'll stop buying prints as my main art buying focus. Thanks!
I can't help but think you are going about this the wrong way, first thing is to find the artist/s whose work you want and then be patient for the work. Buying art because commissions are available seems the wrong way to approach it to me. Good luck regardless though and hope you find a piece you like ๐

5 to 7.5k is quite a large chunk of cash for your first commission especially if you're new to this. Take your time, discover what you like (rather than commission timelines as a contributory factor) and then choose to part with that sort of cash.

It seems like a fair idea. It seems like the big names/blue chips have huge commission costs or super long waiting periods while the smaller names are very reasonable, under three or four grand. It might be a great idea to to stick to that range for the first and see how that experience goes....
