Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by Happy Shopper on Mar 8, 2019 15:30:41 GMT 1, Any opinions on receiving an original painting on canvas, something quite bold and graphic, flat colours, but there being small, hairline cracks in the paint (just a few and only a cm or 2 long).
Is it just my OCD?
Worth sending back, or living with... or can it be repaired!?

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by sharpster on Mar 8, 2019 15:42:43 GMT 1, I had the same issue with a small Seen canvas I bought from him directly. After some time there were small cracks within the canvas to be found (they werent there when I received the canvas). The artist states on his website that small cracks and imperfections are โpartโ of the artwork so I didnt worry, as the price was quite cheap for an OG but in your case maybe contact the artist first, he might have an answer for you if that has happened for the first time on one of his artworks....

Only thin, random cracks. Not long ones along the image.

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by Eric Pause on Mar 8, 2019 16:59:19 GMT 1, Was the canvas rolled when you received it? If so, was the painted side on the inside or the outside? Already stretched. Only thin, random cracks. Not long ones along the image. Usually cracks can form as a result of improperly rolling a canvas, and stretching out a painted surface. But if yours cracked while remaining stretched it's most likely a problem with the paint itself. If multiple layers are applied before letting the layer below completely dry, the water vapour from the lower layers can cause cracks in the top layers. Or, the paint could have been thinned out with water too much, causing the binder (which maintains flexibility) in the paint to spread too thinly. Or, it could be because it was done with really cheap paint.
As for repairing it, there's not a lot that can be done. They could be painted over to reduce visibility, but the texture would remain. Plus, it could actually make the cracks worse in the future.
It just comes down to personal preference if the cracks in the paint are going to be a deal breaker or not.

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by .dappy on Mar 8, 2019 17:37:47 GMT 1, ... if the paint is quite thick and as part of the subject matter ... I would not worry too much about fine cracks ... all part of the aesthetic of the piece ...

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by moron on Mar 8, 2019 17:53:41 GMT 1, There is acrylic paint and then there is acrylic paint.
If it's painted in artists acrylics like liquetex etc it should be quite durable and flex a bit. If it's painte din spray can acrylics as used on vehicles and garden gates etc it will be less flexible. If it's painted in household paint on walls acrylics it will crack on canvas eventually.
It could be that the canvas was a bit over stretched and probably that it's the gesso, i it's on pre primed acrylic canvas that has split in places making the paint on top split.
I wouldn't worry about it as long as it doesn't start flaking off

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by WOOF on Mar 8, 2019 20:04:40 GMT 1, Part of the piece and process. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sorry, but that's both incorrect and bad advice. If it didn't come to you from the artist cracked, it's not meant to be that way.

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by Dunning Kruger on Mar 8, 2019 21:51:12 GMT 1, The correct term is Crackleure or Craquelure, happens if the canvas hasn't been primed prior to painting or occurs during the drying process, if not managed properly. I suggest you raise the issue with the artist or the gallery, to resolve. Should not be left to you to undertake, unless you bought the works some years ago.

Seems a little wishy washy to say one painting can have cracks and another can't and is garbage.

[but also do quickly check temperature conditions around your canvas - don't tell us it is hanging on top of a radiator or has hot water pipes running in the wall behind it.]

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by The Observer on Mar 9, 2019 2:53:22 GMT 1, Ill share my experience: I purchased a canvas directly from an artist and noticed a few fine cracks. It drove me crazy. I went to a restorer who promised to make it like new. The cracks were covered but I (with my eye for detail) can still see them. Over time I forgot. No one else has ever noticed. The artist gave me a rebate. But this was not a super valuable piece, either.

Advice - Cracks in Acrylic Paint on Canvas, by Dunning Kruger on Mar 9, 2019 3:09:54 GMT 1, Part of the piece and process. I wouldn't worry about it. This is absolutely the worst advice, it can spread over time, it pretty much means the paint has in areas where cracking occurs has become unstable. I strongly suggest you discuss with the artist/gallery to find a remedy. It isnโt that diffucult to resolve.

My guess is that the cracking is due to the canvas no being primed properly or at all.
