Which galleries would you avoid?, by bravenewworld on Jun 24, 2019 8:05:27 GMT 1, I have nothing against The Hole, though it does seem they don't care at all about their buyers. I would advise against dealing with MSP Modern. What a shit and cocky young dealer.

I would advise against dealing with MSP Modern. What as**t and cocky young dealer. He's a massive c*ck. I haven't bought anything from them but the way they deal with enquiries is pretty poor to put it mildly. I enquired about a piece they had listed, and rather than acknowledge my enquiry they ignored it and emailed to ask if I had any other works by the artist they could buy.
Like literally just "Do you have any works by this artist we could buy?".
On another note, I have to say V1 I have had nothing but extremely positive dealings with - in terms of shipping, customer service etc. I recently reached out regarding authentication of a secondary market work and they were extremely helpful and supportive even though there was nothing in it for them at all.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by remebrigs on Jun 25, 2019 2:00:56 GMT 1, Be very careful with Martin Lawrence Galleries when in the States. They kept a 10% down payment on a Haring when they said I could hold and have the weekend to consider. Shady to say the least, told them I buy a lot and have a large network of collector friends but couldnโt get my money back.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by honestcrooks on Jun 25, 2019 9:59:40 GMT 1, I've had great dealings with Kathy from The Hole in NYC. Their sales tactic isn't very "soft" (they try to push it to the limit) but in the end, I got what I wanted at the price I wanted, even though I was a first time customer and the piece was in high demand. You just have to keep in mind you are dealing with people who do this for a living and look at art as a fast moving consumer good. Not as the emotional piece of interior for your dream house you see it.
The worst dealing (or lack of in this case) I've had, was definitely with HVW8. The situation was the following: They stocked a Parra piece for over 3 years. I messaged them to inquire about available pieces and I got quoted a very fair price on the remaining canvas they had from an earlier show. Within the hour I give them a "go" and ask them for payment information and shipping quotes. They go dead for over a week and after I send them another message, they tell me someone, magically, just paid a deposit on the piece a day before I inquired about the piece. This felt very random to me as it was available for over 3 years, they send it as available and such, but ok, fair enough. A week passes by after this debacle, and I get hit up on Instagram by one of my fellow collectors in the US. He says he can get ahold of a Parra canvas, and (you can guess by now what happened), he presents me the canvas I wanted to buy a few weeks earlier, for 4 times (!) the price I got quoted by the gallery. It seems someone from Tyler's entourage (owner of HVW8) was the seller, so ... I don't want to jump to conclusions, but ok ... :-D I then messaged the gallery with this story and they were shocked this happened and they wanted to hear names - which I obviously didn't give - so they could trace it back. It could be a misunderstanding, or the universe telling me this work wasn't for me, but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth, so for me, it stopped here.
Also, the agent of Parra in the US (don't know if it's still the current one) is/was terrible in communication. Even if you throw money at him, he still doesn't get back at you in any way ever. Strange stuff.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by mrblast on Jun 26, 2019 4:30:46 GMT 1, Why? I know they are expensive buy they seem to have quite the inventory. Not my experience at all. Offered them great art, they never buy. Burned my collection. Never own what they sell. Prices are over priced in the 10s of thousands. Offered me a Jonas Speaker print 10 days after I got mine for $48k. Triple the price. A joke gallery IMO. They might be overpriced but people still seem to be willing to pay....

To each their own. I know someone who bought a grey Nola from them and paid in full over 4 weeks ago. Work still hasnโt arrived. If people want to over pay for that kind of thing, more power to them. Life is good when you can afford to pay double and not lose a wink of sleep over it.

I would advise against dealing with MSP Modern. What as**t and cocky young dealer. I have bought from and sold to MSP Modern. Sorry you had a bad experience. Mine have been positive on both sides. He is young. But he is data driven and doesnโt really pander to certain clientele. Itโs his business I guess. I think if he has a client that will bitch about a $25 shipping fee, maybe he just decides he does t need people like that in his book? Not sure what the circumstances are he has bought from me for stock, and has sold my work to his clients. He has always been super transparent with me. Nobody is perfect. He always gave me a really good price on the buy and a good price on the sell.
Hope you have a better experience with them in the future

As for the person waiting for the NOLA maybe they didn't have it in stock and have to go and find one. It seems they have every Banksy and Jonas Wood print listed on their website but on the occasion I've enquired the work hasn't been available.

Which galleries would you avoid?, by Graham H on Jun 26, 2019 8:57:14 GMT 1, 95% of the works they offer or are shown on their site are on commission or they hunt stuff down if asked if they have got.
I cant imagine with the prices of most of the artists they advertise / feature that most galleries have backers or deep enough pockets to actually ' own' many pieces.
Ive bought from them in the past, and like others have said, they reach out to try to buy things if they have a 'client' looking for something.. but never got to a realistic price to buy or sell for quite some time..
I dont think they are much different to a lot of galleries selling Warhol / Banksy / Haring etc

Not entirely sure. But if they donโt have it, they shouldnโt be selling and taking payment for it. I mean, she received photos of the print and a condition report. She sent payment and poof. A month later... still no print.

Yes, it is expensive to own one of everything all the time, especially when Banksy margins are razor thin. Iโd rather just frame up a deal to get 5k than to spend 60k buying a piece for a 5k commission. It does make sense, G. My problem is when they send me a courtesy* email notifying me that theyโve located a work and can offer/source for me at a price that is 20-30k over the retail market. They word it like theyโre doing me a favor at that price. Itโs predatory pricing and they think we donโt know any better. Itโs just a bit gross how they do it.

Anyone dealt with these guys? You're lucky if they'll even send you a price list, and most of the time seem over priced anyway.
Are they massively connected? It seems artists want to show with them at the moment, but I don't know why!

I find this strange because I've honestly never had an issue and I've been dealing with them for years and even met them and they were so nice..the only thing I can think of possibly is that you are asking about javier and at that point there was a mailing list that started in 2016 for this show

But also their upcoming shows. Same deal... Despite also having had contact about them last year. Seems they've started getting extra fussy about who they talk to.
When they showed Sam Friedman and Todd James before, their prices seemed high... but at least they sent prices!

If the artist you want is super hot in demand and flippable, you better make sure you have bought plenty from that gallery beforehand. Chatting them up means shรฏt by now.
Galleries are only super duper helpful when they are trying to move trash.
Have a super duper fun evening.

I had a fantastic experience with Joshua Liner Gallery earlier this week- Re: Arno Beck. I am a first time customer- from out of town and unable to make it to the show. Yet I was still treated with incredible respect and professionalism. (Stark Contrast to OTI)- I flew over 2,000 miles for the Invader show... and was treated like absolute garbage I have 4 Kits, over 15 prints, and wanted an original enough to fly across the country... Yet they didn't even see fit to respond to my RSVP until 2 days before the show (despite multiple emails and phone-calls going back over a month pre-show)- and didn't even offer me a wristband to the VIP afterparty! They wouldn't even let me buy a complete set of Sunset prints- When I enquired about Originals- the least expensive one available was over $30,000-- and pretty weak in my opinion... even though I had saved up enough money for a book cover or two- Which wasn't easy, I passed on some great artwork (that I regret now.) Can you believe they wanted me to do an interview with the LA times for them? Edit- Sorry for the rant... but it's been almost a year and I'm still Butt-Sore over that. One of my favorite artists let down by poor representation.
It comes down to the artist. If the artist you want is super hot in demand and flippable, you better make sure you have bought plenty from that gallery beforehand. Chatting them up means shรฏt by now. Galleries are only super duper helpful when they are trying to move trash. Have a super duper fun evening. Yes, started with Javier, despite speaking to them a long time before... not even a sniff. But also their upcoming shows. Same deal... Despite also having had contact about them last year. Seems they've started getting extra fussy about who they talk to. When they showed Sam Friedman and Todd James before, their prices seemed high... but at least they sent prices! I had a fantastic experience with Joshua Liner Gallery earlier this week- Re: Arno Beck. I am a first time customer- from out of town and unable to make it to the show.
