Why do Artists want to increase the values of their Art?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 29, 2019 10:16:39 GMT 1, Why do Artists want to increase the values of their Art?
The reason for Limited Editions is of course to hold and hopefully increase the resale values of art, so why do artists care about the resale values? Is it purely so they can increase the price of future releases? if so, that suggests their motivation is to make money, so the next question is why not just sell much more art at affordable prices and the artists possibly makes even more money than he would have done by limiting the releases. It sounds like a balancing art between the two, and maybe some artists don’t get that balance right? what do you think?

Why do Artists want to increase the values of their Art?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 29, 2019 14:15:42 GMT 1, I dunno, I just think was was normal in the art world 10 or 20 years ago needs to be thought about carefully now. With the world so closely connected by social media and huge populations starting to have spending powers that will soon dwarf those in Europe and America. Maybe Limited Edition Art in the sense we know it, might disappear. If Artists at least do massive editions in the thousands, could it lead to them becoming so popular, so well know, that the artists who try to control their tiny limited editions might disappear and be forgotten.

Why do Artists want to increase the values of their Art?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 29, 2019 14:33:36 GMT 1, I think people are always going to be interested in original art and small print editions. I agree, definitely, people love collecting.
I just wonder if the size of the market is expanding and will expand massively over the next few decades, so much that Limited, should be in the thousands, otherwise the result is practically like releasing nothing at all.
Imagine Banksys print releases were limited editions of 10, do you think he would be famous now? I don’t think so. I think Artists grow in popularity by releasing art for the demand, but if the editions are too small it can end up limiting their popularity and eventually demand.

Why do Artists want to increase the values of their Art?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 29, 2019 14:38:59 GMT 1, Many artists in this scene have actually benefited from Banksy not releasing much, Don’t you think? Arhhhh, I can’t buy a Banksy, so I will buy a Dolk or DFace instead 😁 or even Mr Brainwash, Shepard Fairey, Kaws, the artists who pretty much release something every week.

You really think previous print releases are the main reason Banksy is now famous?

Prints got the ball rolling . Hear stories of people on here from old threads hesitating when canvases were £400 and again when £1500 for girl with ballooon ..once the prints started picking up on eBay and the hype it generated people were happy to spend extra on canvases . Prints are a wider appeal as produced in mass compared to canvases and were discussed more frequently back in the day and a good deal were bought to flip.

Nick walker , micalef, Elllus , spqr were the artists that benefitted from banksy in the beginning , look at some of the prices from 2005-07 to what the same work from above artists sell for now!
