Is a poster considered a lithograph?, by Poly Mindset on Aug 1, 2019 23:25:33 GMT 1, As far as I know it isn't and I only ask because I saw that on Paddle8 there is a Banksy "Think Tank" what I believe to be the bus stop poster listed as a lithograph. Was this image ever released as a print? Was it ever released as a print in that large size 152.4 x 101.6 cm? I know these posters have become somewhat collectible and I do have one but that's not mine on Paddle8. Tho I am interested to see if this sells and if so for how much.

That poster is a litho. I agree that it can be and it depends on the printing method whether done on stone or metal plate but this looks like it could be inkjet which would disqualify it, wouldn't it?. Any members have any literature or proof that this is actually a litho?

Is a poster considered a lithograph?, by tab1 on Aug 2, 2019 1:37:34 GMT 1, Many posters are given away for free or sold cheap initially , when the artists become relevant /popular / profitable these posters become valuable , some new to collecting would assume lithography is expensive or the same value point as newer main editions as using same process in some cases , it is just a form of printing ..you even have posters screen printed or hand stencilled by banksy in the past when in low numbers cheaper but more time consuming than lithography to produce .any thing by banksy is irrational in prices at the moment .

"Poster" is no more than a generic term describing a large printed image on paper, intended to be hung for decorative or informative purposes.
In common parlance, the word suggests a print that was produced quickly, cheaply (with inexpensive materials and printing methods), and often in large numbers. Such a print is therefore typically viewed as disposable.
[Note the above description doesn't fully apply in all cases. By way of illustration, I could spend a fortnight creating a one-off poster with acrylic paint and markers, to advertise the upcoming school disco.]
Although posters can be made with any printing technique, in practice, the techniques generally used are those suitable for mass production. They include screenprinting and inkjet printing. However, most items described as posters today are printed using the industrial method of offset lithography. The same applies for books, magazines and postcards.
__________
The Blur Think Tank poster currently on Paddle8 is an offset lithograph (as opposed to an artisanal hand lithograph, e.g. created with a lithography stone).
paddle8.com/work/after-banksy/179141-think-tank/
__________
It's a minor point, but the listing description of "Though Banksy long presented himself as an artist staunchly against the commercialization of art..." betrays an ignorance by Paddle8 of Banksy and his history.
That statement ignores the artist's previous commercial work with record labels, along with the prints and originals he would release for commercial sale. His output at the time (2003) was hardly limited to just street art and graffiti.
__________
Hat tip to Trismanco, who worked on the graphic design for the Think Tank album.

Is a poster considered a lithograph?, by aravan on Aug 2, 2019 17:04:24 GMT 1, Oh by the way...on our Instagram is a post today and also a story which we will keep there ..printmaking techniques in a nutshell.. This should be required reading, thank you for directing people to it and for posting it in the first instance. Hopefully one or two of the 'specialists' who use this forum will use this as a launch-pad for further research and stop measuring the 'block' size of screenprints...

Is a poster considered a lithograph?, by met on Aug 3, 2019 4:13:51 GMT 1, The Blur Think Tank poster currently on Paddle8 is an offset lithograph (as opposed to an artisanal hand lithograph, e.g. created with a lithography stone). As you said met, offset lithography is the process that is used for 90% of commercial printing, where pictures are involved. a small point would be the 'artisanal' hand lithograph can be done on a metal plate as well as a stone.
Indeed. We're on the same page entirely.
The reference to "e.g." was meant to indicate that stone lithography was just one example of hand lithography. It is however my preferred example to cite, because I feel it offers a cleaner contrast with offset lithography โ given the latter process in most cases also uses a metal plate.

Is a poster considered a lithograph?, by pellets on Aug 3, 2019 8:51:41 GMT 1, On this topic, can someone please help me understand why many Murakami prints have such high prices when they are editions of 300 offset lithographs?
Is it cos Murakami is genuinely that significant? Or its cheaper to pay 1.5k for a print than to fly to Japan to pick one up? Or is there more to the prints than being โjustโ an offset lithograph?
