Major Gallery investing in urban art., by lv90210 on Aug 2, 2019 14:50:58 GMT 1, Just got back from US and rumours abound of major NY gallery interest refocusing on urban art following growth in Asian markets. With plenty or artists names being mentioned Banksy, Kaws, obviously but a few surprises, invader, Beejoir, DFace, Bast and more... Interesting times again possibly
Groundbreaking..... this is big news !!
The biggest surprise there was Bejoir and Dface, feel sorry for such an in experienced gallery wasting their time with these artists.

Major Gallery investing in urban art., by Poster Bob on Aug 2, 2019 16:20:49 GMT 1, Sounds like tall-tales. The Asian market is mostly China. Chinese collectors prefer classical works by Chinese artists. They are not interested in street art. I know one of you is going to start yapping about Invader sales in Hong Kong but it is such an insignificant drop in the bucket compared to all of the money in the market.

Major Gallery investing in urban art., by sgolby on Aug 2, 2019 16:25:52 GMT 1, To be honest, prices in NY tend to be wild, because most people see retail gallery prices in NY and think that is indicative of the market as a whole.

Major Gallery investing in urban art., by Deleted on Aug 4, 2019 14:58:42 GMT 1, PosterBob is actually right here. Let give him some credit.
The Asian market was primarily based on Chinese Artists and not street art. Sure a few street artist like KAWS, ARSHAM, BANKSY, INVADER are doing well but these are NOT the big ticket items that are lifting the market. You are hearing selected good stories about a few artist but over all the market is 20% down from last year according the reports and that's due mostly to the Asian market not buying chinese art. Chinese art had a massive massive boom over the past decade and now is having its correction.
This is the absolute worst time to be spending big dollars on originals or prints from street artist that are not going anywhere. The prices they are asking right now are absolute peak prices. Just look at Paul Insect. His actual auction prices on his original are horrible. Heritage Auctions recent results shows items selling for less than his retail by thousands (ie those eyes - 6K and beyond the streets, 5K on heritage and that's after Buyers Fees and Auction House fees so the guy sold for WAY LESS than Insect asking prices).

Street art is the smallest things when it comes to the Asian market. The gallery that is talking about doing street art... who cares... NYC is filled with top galleries doing street art for over 10 years now. If anything this a sign to sell it.

I hadnโt really given it much thought until you mentioned it, but the fact that the Insect eyes are selling for less than retail at auction is something of a red flag and points to a bubble in the urban art market.

The Asian, read 'Chinese', market isn't what it was cracked up to be and many galleries are pulling up and exiting. On the auction front, that market is notorious for buyer non-payment.
