Paula Rego exhibition - Milton Keynes , by Coach on Aug 18, 2019 19:42:09 GMT 1, There is a major exhibition of works by Paula Rego at the MK Gallery. On until 22 Sept. Entry is under a tenner, and free for those under 26. I went last weekend. This is a substantial exhibition, with many fabulous paintings. Hugely better than I expected considering itโs locatoon. The gallery itself is lovely, with friendly staff, a nice little book shop and cafe. There is an excellent show catalogue too.
There is a print for sale, circa ยฃ1400.
I cannot recommend this show highly enough. One of the best Iโve been to in quite a while. Spectacular.

โShowing works spanning her entire career since the 1960s, this is the first major retrospective of Regoโs work in England for over 20 years. The exhibition includes previously unseen paintings and works on paper from the artistโs family and close friends, which reflect Regoโs perspective as a woman immersed in urgent social issues and current affairs. The selection of works focuses on the moral challenges to humanity, particularly in the face of violence, gender discrimination and political tyranny. There are paintings and etchings related to children sold into slavery in North Africa (1996-98), abortion (1998-2000) and female genital mutilation (from 2009). Many of the images begin with the artistโs Portuguese roots and childhood experiences or respond to current affairs. This exhibition addresses challenging subjects. Parental and carer discretion may be required. MK Gallery will be the only venue in England for the exhibition which will subsequently travel to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh and to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin where it will be the first ever retrospective of Regoโs work in Scotland and Ireland.โ

Paula Rego exhibition - Milton Keynes , by Briggs 74 on Aug 19, 2019 21:01:42 GMT 1, thanks for posting Coach - she did a talk at my History of Art course in the mid 90s and she came across as an extremely talented, charming artist. Spoke for ages and tends to cut to the chase. Great person and artist and massively overlooked

Very good to read that. The show in MK is worth a trip if not too far.

Paula Rego exhibition - Milton Keynes , by Dibbs 45 on Aug 21, 2019 14:47:13 GMT 1, Saw the documentary a while back. Very good watch. Hatchards have signed books by her. I'm not sure whether there is any left though.
