For Sale: ‘Pups’ - Joe Rush / Mutoid Waste co, by microcosmica on Sept 20, 2019 18:42:22 GMT 1, Woof woof!
For sale, ‘Pups’ (engine parts, scrap metal, articulated head). Condition mint, intentionally distressed appearance. Solid piece.
Unique sculpture by one of the very earliest pioneers of the urban art movement and no minor influence on Banksy: Joe Rush of Mutoid Waste co / Car Henge fame. Purchased at the legendary exhibition / art show of near-mythical status: ‘Mutate Britain’ on Portobello Road in 2009. That show was really something - have never experienced anything close to it.
Seeing what could be achieved in a run-down and disused part of the Westway underpass, it wasn't long afterwards that I helped to set up a non-profit cinema in the same space. We served beer from an ice-cream van there... (we almost managed to get the ice-cream van from the Bristol Museum show!)... but I digress
...Joe told me that Pups was his pet dog that died as a puppy. One day when out in his workshop, he glimpsed his face staring up from some old engine bits on the workshop floor. Joe decided to put him back together again.
EDIT 8th July 2020: £6k / offers.

For Sale: ‘Pups’ - Joe Rush / Mutoid Waste co, by urbanflik on Jul 11, 2020 17:08:05 GMT 1, This was the first show I ever went to. I literally stumbled across it.
The first work I ever bought was at this show, a statue by Mutoid Waste company..My mrs thought I was a lunatic bringing this huge steel sculpture home made from Ducati engine parts.
Absolutely still love looking at it...and yours is stunning. Truly unique.

Absolutely still love looking at it...and yours is stunning. Truly unique. Ah, you were there too? Cool. It's a shame that little seems to exist anymore re any documentation of Mutate Britain. Do you remember the full size customised / mutated helicopter they had just lying around in the arena? And the anvil that was hanging on a chain directly over a sofa... the fire-breathing robot dinosaur "motorbikes" stomping through the crowds etc..? I've even got a vague memory of the hair of one of the female performers catching fire and them frantically putting it out.
Quite a few artists had some of their first real exposure there. I remember Schoony had about 5 or 6 of his Boy Soldier pieces inside the main gallery area for a few hundred quid each.

For Sale: ‘Pups’ - Joe Rush / Mutoid Waste co, by rockbeer on Jul 17, 2020 12:43:51 GMT 1, It was a fantastic show – proper warmed me up on a freezing winter's night.
Sadly the only things I brought home were a monstrous hangover, a few hazy memories and this rather the worse for wear showcard.
Good times indeed.

This is definitely worth a watch on BBC iPlayer and you can see how much influence Joe Rush had on Banksy.
