Artorious007, by Swishhh on Feb 29, 2020 21:12:47 GMT 1, Genuine question, in a completely convoluted art market, what is the problem with supporting your wife, close friends as studio assistants, and older artists (while under the radar) whose work you respect, collect, and admire greatly?

Also, at the end of the day, if an artist's career is suddenly hyped because of one dude pushing, it's not sustainable and we're back on the pump & dump circle of things leaving that artist with nothing pretty quickly.
artorious is also pointing the finger to IG collectors and other tools that solely focus on those artists trying to hop on the pump&dump bandwagon. Dont want to name anybody but you see them everywhere around here, the FB group and IG

Dont want to name anybody but you see them everywhere around here, the FB group and IG Those are all very valid points. I suppose for me personally as an outsider looking in, when KAWS is making open editions and "manipulating" markets it usually ends up going towards buying works that get loaned to museums or the new studio space he bought next to his current one in BK.
Just seems to be a lot of vitriol and bitterness from all angles of the art world these days, even though most of what they are saying rings true. Here is the ole poor mans Nara trope.
http://instagr.am/p/B9Keon7pLAk
Don't have $25mm to pick up a Nara canvas, pick up a Calleja for a mere $80k. Being around the art world and industry can certainly make one lose grasp of what the monetary reality is for 99.9% of the folks out there.
Jerry Gagosian might be the best account on IG, this one isn't giving me the same level of deft parody.

Artorious007, by pellets on Mar 9, 2020 8:37:42 GMT 1, This IG has made me realise that i know nothing about the “mainstream” art scene. Im just sittin over here collecting sweettoof and minding my business.
I like this IG but definitely prefer posts with positive messages or with examples of artists (s)he likes. Easy to say which artists are phoney or overhyped but more productive to give examples of meaningful art.

i find his instagram post very interesting even if i have a totally different taste.
i really would love to hear what he thinks about Banksy... at the same time i won't pay anyone to tell me what artist i should like or i should buy!

Well he has written plenty about Banksy. I have asked him to elaborate a bit more but unfortunately didn't get a response. Basically his stance is "no institutional backing = hype crap art".

By throwing the baby out with the bath water, he conveniently does not need to address the fact that the art world itself is not immuable
Its frontiers are in constant flux, and that no great art collection was built by merely applying simplistic criteria from times past
His point of view is monolithic and lazy, which is too bad

Artorious007, by Arty Farty 15 on Oct 13, 2020 11:45:26 GMT 1, His views are very dated and he’s a bit of a moany lil bitch. “Needs institutional backing or an MFA.” He says stuff like it’s ground breaking and he’s doing everyone a favour, in reality it’s really nothing new. Given that he’s now charging for the advice I’d recommend instead reading:
“The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art Book” by Donald Thompson
He sounds like one of these old school old money folk stuck in their ways individuals that used to be in charge of hiring at banks, only willing to accept Oxbridge or fellow stonemasons as applicants thus missing out on the talent in front of them, and then unwilling to accept when someone working class eventually replaces them.

Artorious007, by orchid on Oct 13, 2020 12:01:08 GMT 1, He's a troll with too much time on his stands. As said, a very olde world view of the art world, another era. Seems a little over-excited that he's recently discovered Instagram. Trashing artists, whilst less than discreetly hyping others in his collection in a parrot-like fashion. Quite hilarious his talk of democratisation and accessibility of art, whilst setting up a subscription service (with currently 15 subscribers at last count, none of whom know who they're actually taking advice from). Was interesting/amusing to start, now all very cliche and yawn.

Artorious007, by astarti on Oct 13, 2020 12:53:16 GMT 1, Seems like he is missing the point of social media.. If someone is that frightened of being criticised or contradicted or indeed comments of any kind by anyone he hasn't vetted I don't think much of their opinion on anything.
To his defence I have not agreed with him on the Banksy approach and he hasn't banned me or unfollowed me. I just pmed him that I couldn't for some reason comment in his posts and he 'fixed' the issue.

It's a shame he's hiding away in his bunker somewhere and become a parody of himself. Why not open up debate and discussion by letting anyone comment to disagree with him. His view on Banksy alone demonstrate he's completely out of touch and out of his depth.

Artorious007, by The Italian One on Oct 13, 2020 13:35:19 GMT 1, I think it is part of the social media to follow or unfollow basically if you like it or not. Read what someone has to say and then agree or silently disagree unfollowing the account... Honestly I find his post interesting and I agree with him that some new artist has more hype than art skills, also when he comes to unsigned banksy print I think he is not wrong at all.

Not everyone wants or appreciates an old master or a Warhol. I know what I'd prefer to be buying if I had millions.
