Pets - small dogs in the UK cost, by purpleandred on May 3, 2020 13:17:53 GMT 1, Hi
Quick fire random non art related question regarding monthly costs for a small terrier. Thinking of buying a puppy these next few months and wondered what I can feasibly expect to pay monthly for insurance and food costs. I haven’t factored in a twice weekly dog walk..
Who do you recommend as the best pet insurer? “Used by many” “Agria” Are two that seem to be popular.
Thanks

Pets - small dogs in the UK cost, by PS on May 3, 2020 13:47:16 GMT 1, This is random for an art forum, however.
I have a 1 yr old medium sized terrier.
Insurance is £13.50 per month (Direct line, never had an issue with claims on previous dogs so always stuck with them) not a pedigree dog.
Vets pet plan is £16.50 per month
Food probably £10 per week tops
Worth every penny.

Pets - small dogs in the UK cost, by Zippy on May 3, 2020 14:08:48 GMT 1, Dog Food: I order 2 x 12kg sacks of ‘Arden Grange’ which is great value and last around 3-4 months.
Dog Insurance: i use ‘Animal Friends’ who started at £18 a month but now my dog is 9 it has gradually increased to £90 a month. When he had a cruciate knee op they paid the majority but when his other knee went a year ago they only paid a small % and i had to pay £2.8k.
So it starts reasonably but as they get older the costs increase. But the pleasure they bring is great and its nice that someone is pleased to see you when you come home!
Edit: i order the food from swellpets.co.uk and they deliver in 2 days.

Pets - small dogs in the UK cost, by Lazarus II on May 3, 2020 14:32:47 GMT 1, I use Direct Line for pets, not cheap and will seem v expensive in the early years when you are less likely fo claim. In the latter years when you will b inclined to make claims then they sort out all of your costs directly with the vet and long ongoing claims are dealt with easily.
With our last dog a Weimaraner, in her last two years she ended up with doggie MRI’s, blood plasma treatment and all sorts of scans and i was crapping it that they would query some of the costs but they didnt blink an eye and paid up no probs. I recouped all of my early year costs and then some !!!
We have a 4 yr old Weimaraner and he is about £40 mth but the cost has increased slightly year on year.

Pet insurance policies are not all equal. The cheaper policies may only cover costs for each condition for up to 12 months, which can be problematic. Some may have a treatment limit per condition, which causes the same issue if your pet needs long term medication. The more comprehensive policies tend to have a limit per condition per 12 months, which resets each year which will be much better in that scenario. But it will cost you more.
They also differ in how costs are paid. Some will pay the vet direct, others require to you pay the vet and then claim reimbursement from the insurers. Again this may be important to you if cash flow can be tight.
Pets become very expensive when they start to break.
