Martin Whatson Popularity?, by duggyfresh on Nov 2, 2020 15:30:03 GMT 1, I would say that his prices have been creeping up with his popularity and it hasnt been a crazy jump like some artists. Plus he's been around for a for a while now and is more established in the scene.

Martin Whatson Popularity?, by christiangul on Nov 2, 2020 21:15:04 GMT 1, Last 6-12 months it’s been a huge demand from 2-5 collectors in the US buying everything in Norway and driving the prices up. Some of them run a gallery in the US as well, from what I’ve read. People think that it’s hundreds of new collectors jumping on the train, but it’s actually very few people with different usernames.
Many Norwegians also buy up local pieces and sell abroad leaving few pieces for sale.
So in addition to those buying up in the US, Martin’s art have reached out to more people on Instagram looking for some “fancy wall decorations”. Those factors combined causes everyone to think he’s a huge investment prices peak.

I would say legit, I have had quite a few MW prints over the years and when I have sold any they have increased in price each time.

Facebook group has about 2-3 people hyping the fuck out of him. Making people think there is a bigger market than there really is out there. It’ll level out. Martin Doesn’t/hasn't progressed as an artist in the past few years. The new people will get tired of him and move on like most of us already have to bigger and better things.

I recently joined for a quote...holy sheeshness you were right...I excited that group after getting "rape the buyer" pricing quotes

Most unknowledgable people I show my collection to always say “I like that”. Most modern apartments go for the Scandinavian vibe and these really complement that style. I get it’s basic but it looks much better than half the tat I’ve seen banded around this forum. This includes door mats on walls 🤷🏼♂️
Some good examples if you search #martinwhatson on Instagram:

Martin Whatson Popularity?, by sean1397 on Nov 7, 2020 3:19:09 GMT 1, I bought it all - seriously it was a big part of it. I started noticing the prices going up about a year ago.
Wasn't my plan. I was new to the graffiti art / urban art game. I really like Martin's work. So I made a list of what I wanted and set out to find it all. I bought over 100 pieces - prob 120 or os. As I did this I watched prices go from $800 to $1500 to $3000. Eventually I stopped as I feel the stuff is fair to overly expensive and now I'm only buying occasionally
Ive never sold a piece. For a while I was competing with one other guy most the time. He can id himself if he wishes. We kind of stopped competing. Then 3-4 others came in the past few months and started buying everything. I've probably bought 1 piece a month for the past 3-4 months but 3-4 others have become the guys buying it all but that's what it is - there are a few people buying it all. And as something jumps 300-500% over 1-2 years a bunch of other people start vying for it - which is what we are seeing now
Its also getting more mainstream - 2-3 years ago you only saw it on this forum, eBay, and a few other urban art forums. It is now in major hotels and major galleries. He has gone from galleries where the top piece is $5000 to galleries that sell $50000-100000 pieces. Just been a massive move up.
I like to think I got lucky. I dont think I have any skill at this but Im looking for other artists to ride along with. Have my eyes on a couple

Martin Whatson Popularity?, by sean1397 on Nov 7, 2020 3:25:21 GMT 1, You are right - it's a lot more than a fb group.
When you sell out instantly in NYC, Oslo, Copenhagen. Paris, and Hong Kong (and I mean instantly) it's not a 2000 person fb group.
I am fairly high up at a lot of galleries that sell his stuff. A year ago, I could basically buy whatever I wanted. No I get an option about 5% of the time

Martin Whatson Popularity?, by sean1397 on Nov 7, 2020 3:32:33 GMT 1, Last Ill say I think his works really good. I've poured through forums and artsy and instagram and now have an excel file of about 3500 artists. To this day Martin's work is still my favorite. I wish he varied it more and I hate when he reprints old images (has pushed me away a couple times) but a ton of people post that he's not talented or a terrible artist. I dont get that. I look at old forum posts from years ago where Martin would sell on this forum and others and people literally would say his work is awful or why are you selling your own work or similar things, if not quite that direct. He must be laughing now but I never understood it as I think what he does is amazing and very very high quality

Martin Whatson Popularity?, by ecudat on Dec 30, 2020 19:06:29 GMT 1, Had a chance to buy The Cycle almost exactly 12 months ago. Was keen as I'd just seen his Behind the Curtain mural in Miami. But didn't want to spend that much on a single piece. Would have been a great investment in hindsight, but alas it wasn't to be.
Have bought plenty of other prints this year from other artists with the same cash to be fair and waiting for a couple of others to do pieces that I really like.
Even with MW, I didn't even bother with the Panda as it didn't look anything. Tried for the Stag but failed miserably and same with GP vault sales.
