SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 30, 2021 17:51:32 GMT 1, what a whiny thread. insisting GP move to another ecommerce provider just because you missed out on a hama woods print release is beyond stupid and screams of whiny entitlement. everyone is aware that bots exist. this topic has been discussed ad nauseam. any online ecommerce platform can have a bot developed for it.... its programmers understanding the checkout process and taking the time to build it. people that think lotteries are better have no clue. their chances drastically decrease in lotteries but they feel better losing because they can't scream "BOTS!" after missing.... even though there are bots for lottery entries. the simple solution: get faster at checking out. i have a fairly good record scoring on online drops without a bot. and no... you will not score 100% of the drops. welcome to the hobby. I have seen GP doing absolutely nothing to reduce the risk of bots so I will raise this again even if if you think it is whiny. Instead all GP do is promote a url for each variation DAYS in advance of a release on their website. Why don’t they have unique urls released at the specified time on release that cannot be worked out? It is not rocket science. I have had success scoring releases on other websites for the last 15 years, but an edition of 100 against 100 bots there is no chance (no matter how quick you are at checking out). This thread is the first on UAA that has shown that bot software is promoting that it specifically works on the GP website. What GP need to realise is that they are not a monopoly but a business. They need to serve the artists they represent as well as people who spend money. If they continue to ignore this issue, their business model will eventually fail. Businesses who survive will listen to their customers (including artists) and adapt. I do agree that lotteries are not a fair way of any release - all they do is increase the contact database of a company to promote future releases. So the gallery is collecting data and not the artist. there's zero times an edition of 100 is being hit by 100 bots. You can guage this easily by looking at the resale market. What percentage of the release gets flipped?

SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 30, 2021 17:55:45 GMT 1, They have the engineers to make strides against bots, but I see 2 things that are preventing this from being effective: 1. In order to add Shopify' 'Bot Protection' to your site, you must have a 'Shopify Plus' plan, which starts at $2k/month. This is a large step up from the $29/$79/$299 monthly costs for the 3 more basic plans. Most artists/galleries don't have the budget, or can't justify, an extra $24k+/year, just to slow down bots (it doesn't completely stop them) 2. The problem with Shopify is that you can write one bot and it will work for thousands of sites. This gives developers great incentive to write powerful bots, and overcome the next hurdle from Shopify, as there will be a large number of users with a need for the bot (as we've seen). Now pretty much every customer can easily get a bot to help with their chances. It used to be a small number of users who took the time to write a bot for a custom site, but now it's completely flipped. It's an arms race that has a big entry fee, GP can afford it never in a million years with happen. How have bots hurt GPs business? They haven't and they won't. The majority of their releases are pretty big risks in the flip world. GP has zero incentive to pay $2k a month to address a problem they don't have.

SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 30, 2021 17:58:27 GMT 1, One last thing: if you think that any bot you can walk up and buy at retail, or any bot at all really, is going to get you results on the first try when going for a hot item you are in for a huge surprise. also expect a steep learning curve, and a fair number of additional expenses beyond actually buying a bot.

SHOPIFY BOT, by Acme Thunderer on Jul 30, 2021 20:46:34 GMT 1, As highlighted by 7thson earlier, this is the reason why the Graffiti Prints website has NO protection against bots. Graffiti Prints are NOT covered by Bot Protection so this will always be an issue until they resolve. It is why bot software is advertising Graffiti Prints as vulnerable. If some members get lucky is not the issue of this thread - it is highlighting that bots are rife, but nothing is being done.

SHOPIFY BOT, by Jaylove on Jul 30, 2021 20:55:45 GMT 1, Graffiti Prints, Obey, Mondo... I know people always talk about bots but this is the first time I have seen one Now I know why i had to give up trying to buy from these sites a few years ago Surely there is a way these bots can be detected and disabled on these sites. Gave up years ago. Also gave up buying new releases from the major artists. Don't even bother and this is exactly why.

SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 30, 2021 21:17:04 GMT 1, Sounds like you're ready to start a consulting business.
Ps if the issue causing all this is that didn't get that print, it was because you failed at the drop, not because of OH NO BOTS. it's nice to have a bogeyman to blame your own shortcomings on though

SHOPIFY BOT, by aki on Jul 30, 2021 21:19:02 GMT 1, I'd have to agree I think its an issue. The lottery system they did for the last Martin Whatson release is perhaps a better way but there's always ways of beating the system.
Not sure about the lottery either, same people seems to win every time ?

Honestly you should just send them your cv. You’re so passionate. Tell them you’ll organise their bot protection team 😂.

SHOPIFY BOT, by Acme Thunderer on Jul 30, 2021 23:20:54 GMT 1, Firstly, thanks to the views on this thread I’ve now been offered the print many times over so will be securing this very soon (and thanks to those who helped out).
I only started this thread to bring awareness of bots as it is an issue even if some don’t want to acknowledge it. Over the years it has got worse and will continue to. We can ignore it, or if you have the balls to do so, try to do something about it, which is what I have done. Don’t feel like you have to suck up to galleries.
Forget about GP and other galleries or us as buyers/collectors, but just consider some of the artists who get small margins and none of the inflated resales. I think virtually everyone lost sight of this.
Thanks to those who have contributed so far whether it was constructive, defensive, mildly childish, informative, positive or even confrontational. That is what I like about the forum that we can agree, disagree and having differing options but always take it on the chin. Some of us have been around for too many years, others are new, but all are welcome to join in.
Good luck on any future drops all. Peace and out!

SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 31, 2021 6:25:15 GMT 1, strange seeing y'all defend the decision to not invest in a proper platform tbh (ignoring any pro/anti-bot agendas)
I just don't get it. Shopify IS the proper platform - superior tech turned commodity and available to everyone. From the store owner standpoint it's the absolute best value. Doesn't anyone remember the state of ecommerce before they came along? You had self hosted solutions like WordPress, magento, and 3d cart or hosted subscriptions like big cartel and square - or if you really felt bold you could make your own from scratch and crash and burn in the predictable ways everyone before you had already. If you had a big drop your customers would basically DDOS the store, even on the hosted platforms. Shopify came along and actually solved all the problems store owners with burst traffic experienced. Then they had Kylie Jenner's store on their platform and had to build a new system from the ground up to distribute and handle the traffic generated. Kylie's lip kit traffic dwarfed any release on the platform previously, sneakers included.
I just detest the hatred for Shopify. If you're a store owner this is absolutely the best place to run a store - from the person with little tiny basic needs to the huge corporation with complex needs Shopify is hands fucking down the best you can get. And also... If you're a buyer this is the platform you have the best chance on. You can checkout in under ten seconds if you get the practice in and are prepared when drop time comes. Use the bot that's built into your browser to automatically fill the forms in. Have the final checkout page loaded and refresh it when you add the new item to the cart.
If there's a release of 100 prints let's say bots buy ten - you're not competing against the bots. They're done and gone before you have any idea the drop even started. You're competing against all the other people trying to buy just like you with fat fucking fingers. And you're not all gonna win so get better

SHOPIFY BOT, by gavatron on Jul 31, 2021 6:38:27 GMT 1, I believe the point being made (though I maybe wrong) is that it appears a site pulling £1m per year is on a low tier on Shopify which is causing general users pain

SHOPIFY BOT, by Graffiti Prints on Jul 31, 2021 13:14:35 GMT 1, I answered direct to the original poster on Instagram
So for clarity I thought I would post it here too
Thanks for the info We have known about it for ages Technology and coders will always try and this is not going to stop! Just get worse especially if people post like you did as it makes people wonder if they need a bot.
We can spot bots on each sale, they leave tell tale signs and actively cancel and refund sales.
We worked the opposite way We looked into the whole shopify system with a bot producer and understood what went on This gives us a opportunity to spot and cancel bots Any other way we would be spending 1000$ per month only to be botted anyway as the tech guys will always find a way
If you think we don’t care that’s up to you But we do and actively cancel orders
All Our artists are on board and understand what we are doing as I have explained it to them all There are simple ways to spot bots Which obviously I am not going to share
Posting our accounts etc because you missed out on a print and believe we are not doing properly is low But hey ho we are used to it We get loads of emails complaining etc but it’s part of what we do Until artists increase editions and prices quick sell outs are always going to happen
In the last 2 years our releases have grown so much At least 5 times the amount of people trying to buy For Hama there was over 1000 people online trying to buy They cart a sticker Fill in there details and then continue shopping Then when they add a print then have 2 clicks to check out That’s how they check out in less than 10 seconds We see as they have the stickers on the sale
It’s as simple as that No conspiracy just using the systems to their avantage

I suspect it has only been shared due to other artists now asking questions.
For anyone who doubted that this was not an issue, now you can see it is.
Now it has been raised and being discussed in the open, I sincerely hope that we can see improvements from GP otherwise we will continue to be in the same situation.
They say they have cancelled orders, but they still being targeted by bots (and I would love to know where these cancelled orders go - in the vaults? to other galleries? VIP customers? as they never reappear at normal price afterwards).
They have their next release to show what they are doing differently. We are watching…
As I said before “We can ignore it, or if you have the balls to do so, try to do something about it, which is what I have done.”

SHOPIFY BOT, by tab1 on Jul 31, 2021 14:43:20 GMT 1, It’s in their interest to have these types of buyers , they buy purely to flip which increases the secondary market prices . Gp stated in the past they use secondary market prices ie eBay for their vaults sales pricings. Good business have greater profit margins It's doesn't help the artist long term. Look at oli epp for example
The galleries and print shops do not usually think long term of the artists as they move on, it is about their percentage of profit

We worked the opposite way We looked into the whole shopify system with a bot producer and understood what went on This gives us a opportunity to spot and cancel bots Any other way we would be spending 1000$ per month only to be botted anyway as the tech guys will always find a way If you think we don’t care that’s up to you But we do and actively cancel orders All Our artists are on board and understand what we are doing as I have explained it to them all There are simple ways to spot bots Which obviously I am not going to share Posting our accounts etc because you missed out on a print and believe we are not doing properly is low But hey ho we are used to it We get loads of emails complaining etc but it’s part of what we do Until artists increase editions and prices quick sell outs are always going to happen In the last 2 years our releases have grown so much At least 5 times the amount of people trying to buy For Hama there was over 1000 people online trying to buy They cart a sticker Fill in there details and then continue shopping Then when they add a print then have 2 clicks to check out That’s how they check out in less than 10 seconds We see as they have the stickers on the sale It’s as simple as that No conspiracy just using the systems to their avantage I wasn’t going to share this PM, which they sent to me at 9am this morning, as it was a “private message”. We are watching… As I said before “We can ignore it, or if you have the balls to do so, try to do something about it, which is what I have done.” .to re appear in a vault sale

SHOPIFY BOT, by That Print Guy on Jul 31, 2021 15:23:29 GMT 1, It's a fucking business. GP is in the business of making money. OP let's see some data that supports your position that there's a "problem". The dude just told you how expert buyers without bots succeed on Shopify and you still reply "but that's not enough, we need more improvements because IIIIIIIIII missed a drop".
Come on.

I suspect no one here with any small experience doubts bots are a issue for collectors and publishers alike
Lol you suspect it has only been shared due to other artists now asking questions
no artists care because they believe in us and what we offer and realise quick the more popular they get the people moaning they missed out goes up, so no zero questions or contact
Maybe they are enjoying their weekends out and about I hope so
We take the crappy I missed out, I’m so unhappy with the way you do things off them too and generally people moan at us.
No offence but we don’t care if your watching etc that’s laughable, we run our business to the ideals that have got us where we are after nearly 10 years.
We just bought our first studio/gallery and continue to push the business forward, our way for the benefit of us, our artists and ultimately the collectors
Your opinion as much as you believe in it means not much we know in our heart and soul we do things right and so do our artists
We’re in a no win situation with oversubscribed prints period.
We sell cancelled prints either online or by email
long before we sell a piece, we know what we’re keeping in editions and store them away
In this case no.1-10 of each edition and no.1 brass.
For shows and vault sales and at market prices later
We got nothing to hide and never have.
We started in 2012 as a reaction to smoke and mirrors in art selling
So because we do things so upfront like we set out to and hide nothing we get crap anyway which is ironic

Seriously man, you’re coming off as an entitled millennial. Maybe you are, maybe you aren’t, but taking this tone with a business who is selling prints? Are you kidding me? Just stop buying from them if you’re so upset about how they conduct their business.

SHOPIFY BOT, by Matt 2 ttaM on Jul 31, 2021 20:43:33 GMT 1, Ive had 3 successful purchases this year from GP but I’ve also lost some I wish I hadn’t, it just happens when demand outstrips supply. The worst is when I get a cramp in my thumb from refreshing so intensely but its part of the fun as something usually goes on secondary at some point.
