micallef, british museum, urban art collectors , by leumasdarnley on Mar 29, 2008 22:47:23 GMT 1, Hey Micallef is an amazing artist the fact that he either was mis-advised by Laz or chose to flood the market with his prints doesn't change that. The print market is a fraction of the game vs original works I think Micallef is just about to turn the corner.... again

releasing 1800 signed prints in a day will have some effect when previous prices for a signed were around the 1.5-2k mark

micallef, british museum, urban art collectors , by jam on Mar 29, 2008 23:00:55 GMT 1, I think its all about a fickle market overdriven by flippers. I have been buying up Micallef prints over the past couple months at massive discounts compared to last summers prices, very happy about that! I am sure todays prices will look like a distant dream of bargains come fall. There will also be less and less on the market over time as only true fans will have his work, rather than people out to make profit. I am looking forward to seeing new work too... the tour should be a cracking display!

micallef, british museum, urban art collectors , by darjeeling on Mar 29, 2008 23:34:07 GMT 1, so is it all about edition size or the work? I think blaming it all on the large edition isn't exactly true although part of it. The work at the LA show was rehashed, bland and just not good except for a few pieces. He (and LAzarides) also failed to generate anywhere near the excitement or critical acclaim that Banksy did just a year prior in LA. (This stuff doesn't have anything to do with the prints)
I think Micallef's portraits are very nice, but I'm not always impressed by his subject matter and there are thousands of other artists out there to compete with=lower prices. I don't have any expectation that his prices will climb unless he really comes through big big big time with his next show.

micallef, british museum, urban art collectors , by pepper on Mar 29, 2008 23:34:34 GMT 1, I love Micallef and have Head and Self Portrait up on the wall. The thing is, people are saying he is urban; part of the same movement as other street artists etc but I donโt see any connection other than he sells through Laz and Laz sells mainly art by street artists.
To me Micallef is pop/contemporary art I donโt see any thing urban about him or was he from the city?
I am also interested in what is happening at the end of the year with Micallef as of recent there has been a lot of talk about things hotting up, is something else happening besides him sending two portraits around the world with the British Arts Council? Obviously if he is liked in Asia then that is good for all of us.

To say he is talented is an understatement. I wasnโt to keen on his handy work with a spray can but his charcoal pieces are amazing.

Yes, the value of my stuff by him has halved but I don't give a shit 'cos it's not going anywhere.

He is a very talented artist and his work will certainly hold up over time. Releasing all those prints at once was a great idea and one that i wish certain other artists would do if it has the same effect on their prices...!

micallef, british museum, urban art collectors , by GD303uk on Mar 30, 2008 12:23:40 GMT 1, What exactly is this 'mistake' and relentless references to 'prices rising again' that is so often dredged up all about? He pissed off a lot of flippers both by releasing GIWTBB as a large edition and by not selling out of the LA print series, the fact that these editions are still available at cost, either from source or secondary, is nothing short of perfect in that it allows those that appreciate his work to buy it, hang it and enjoy it. Add to this that he pretty much sold out a huge show of original, and relatively expensive, canvases in a country that had barely heard of him. I'd call that a spectacularly good effort, well done Ant.
Good points , and the fact he sold a succesfull show in a country that was new to him; with an anti USA theme, was even more of a succes. if his prices go up are down it does in no way reflect his tallent as a great pop artist, i agree i dont think he is street but his topics fit well. i love his disturbing francis bacon style with a beautifull twist, and mobern themes, easy to enjoy.
