Framing Hirst NHS Heart - Help Needed, by JockoLad on Nov 6, 2021 9:12:31 GMT 1, I would like to frame my Hirst NHS Heart in a heart shaped frame. I don’t want to spend mega bucks.
My idea is this: ask a local carpenter/cabinet maker to cut me one using ply/solid wood.
Problem: what would the technique be called so I know what to ask for? It would involve a machine cutting into a piece of wood, creating an initial heart shape and then using another machine to cut a depressed (not in the emotional sense) smaller heart inside the original. I would then paint it and place the Hirst inside.
Please, help me find the name of the cutting process and the machinery involved. If my description above is useless, ask me to clarify and I’m hoping the minds on this forum can help me out. I’ve searched the net but come up blank as I’m not using the correct technical language.
Thanks in advance.

You need to use MDF as the material I would suggest and then spray it later. I have a friend who knows a model maker with a CNC machine which cuts out the shape using a CAD drawing of it. He did an amazing job on our Rainbows but he’s not my contact so don’t know his details I’m afraid. I could ask my mate for them but don’t hold your breath as I think he did it as a massive favour.
Alternatively it could be cut out using a router I think?

Brilliant. Thanks for this response and well done managing to decipher what I was actually asking for.
A quick look online would suggest a CNC machine is exactly what I was trying to describe. I’ll get ion the case and try to find someone with the necessary skills local to me.
Are you able to share some photos of your framed up rainbows as would love to see how they turned out.
Thanks again. J

Here you go, we sprayed it in Black 2.0, that colour that Anish Kapoor isn't allowed to use. Let me know how you get on and DM me if you need help with the CAD file, I work in design so could hopefully knock something up for you

That looks stunning and the black is seriously punchy - not a shade I’d considered using. I’ve fired a couple of emails out today but will definitely be in touch if I’m having trouble.
Thanks again.

This looks absolutely brilliant on the wall.
