Museum Glass , by pranart on Jan 14, 2023 20:22:00 GMT 1, Iโve spoken to two local framers today and both are saying that museum glass is a scam and print will still fade.
Any advice.

All works on paper are affected by light, humidity, temperature fluctuations, dust, bugs etc. Nothing is 100% protected unless it's a dark, climate controlled vault somewhere.
Museum glass blocks Upto 99% of UV light and is anti-reflective.
If you want something to not fade (or deteriorate in other ways), don't buy art or store it in said vault.

Absolute joke

Museum Glass , by LJCal on Jan 14, 2023 21:26:40 GMT 1, There are different grades of glass some more effective than others. 99% UV filtering should preserve most works from light damage, but it's down to the level of exposure and the materials the art is made from. Hanging art in a naturally lit room without museum glass is not a good idea as regular glass offers little protection.

Museum Glass , by Acme Thunderer on Jan 14, 2023 22:30:21 GMT 1, Sometimes, instead of museum glass I use 99% artglass (but never 70% artglass) so this is worth checking out. Itโs a bit cheaper than museum glass and has the same UV protection. Nothing will ever be 100% though, unless you display in a pitch black room.
Probably far more important than the glass is having someone who knows how to frame to conservation standards as itโs not only the materials.
In the early days of collecting, I made a couple of mistakes trusting a โlocal framerโ (probably like many others on here) which is why it is worth getting some you trust 100% (not 99%). ๐

He will collect/deliver or you can drop off to Norwich. Hundreds of people on here will recommend him so you canโt go wrong.

Museum Glass , by Pete the Post on Jan 15, 2023 9:14:55 GMT 1, Its a scam, possibly = "Last time i bought a sheet of that, i broke it, and it cost me a fortune. So i never buy that stuff in anymore."
As mentioned above, find a decent framer. Id also give MFM a well used seal of approval.

Museum Glass , by gus on Jan 15, 2023 9:55:52 GMT 1, bit off topic and maybe a stupid question but does mfm just do plain framing or also more custom stuff? and if not does the mister also make / take suggestions? I know nothing about much, and even less about framing or art, but have a few things I want to get framed and the local framer ballsed the last things up, so looking for guidance.

He does fully custom framing but will also advise if you havenโt got a clue. Iโve used him for years. I also always use museum glass on everything as I feel if itโs good enough to have a space on your wall it needs to look itโs best for the person viewing it.

Museum Glass , by gus on Jan 15, 2023 10:42:04 GMT 1, Thanks both. In this case Museum glass makes the framing cost more than the print itself. Which feels weird. But probably just overthinking it. Will give mfm a try though. They seem cool.

But probably just overthinking it. Will give mfm a try though. They seem cool. As I mentioned earlier, you can go for 99% Artglass which is cheaper than museum glass and still the same UV protection. Ask a quote for both and you can then decide. Iโve got both Artglass and Museum in my house and couldnโt tell the difference. Below is a bit more info for you.

Museum Glass , by jstjst on Jan 15, 2023 11:00:18 GMT 1, I also vouch for MFM. They have a large framing centre in Norwich and (I think) a smaller one in Cambridge. They will collect/drop off in London. Gary and his team have huge experience, going back many years. They will do custom work. They are local to me and have always been excellent.

Museum Glass , by Superfuzz bigmuff on Jan 15, 2023 11:36:22 GMT 1, Thanks both. In this case Museum glass makes the framing cost more than the print itself. Which feels weird. But probably just overthinking it. Will give mfm a try though. They seem cool. Framing everything with museum glass is a luxury not everyone can easily afford. I use it for high value pieces with other specs of glass depending on what Iโm framing.
I also have UV films on the windows of a couple of rooms where there is a lot on the walls and take care not to hang anything (museum glass or not) in direct sunlight.
Iโve used MFM and heโs good but there are good framers in most areas if you do your homework you can avoid having to ship your art to Norwich for framing. The advantage of a local framer is that you can build a relationship - useful if you need to jump the queue, have an unusual request etc

Check the joins on mfm, not always clean/flush looking, I've talked to others who've had disappointing results sometimes & moved. You pay for what you get with Pauli, Darbyshire, Simon Beaugie etc.

Museum Glass , by Newar on Jan 15, 2023 12:53:39 GMT 1, There is also another very efficient and climate friendly solution if you have lot of art
(A nice frame job is always good though but you can pay less on the glass you use)
3M Thinsulate Climate Control 75 filter for your house (maybe the best UV filters of the market)

Museum Glass , by its all about me on Jan 15, 2023 12:59:19 GMT 1, I think sometimes people worry about museum glass and preservation too much. Things deteriorate; art, buildings, people, etc. etc. That's part of life. Even priceless works of art in national museums deteriorate over time. Just enjoy your art in the here and now. Don't worry about what condition they will be in, in 30 years time. You probably wont care much for the art you have now in 30 years time anyway.

I tend to buy the 50% extra free vouchers that mfm does in November. It allows me to have the better glass. I also tend to sell a few of the bits off that we all accumulate that will never be framed which also goes towards the framing costs.

Museum Glass , by John The Badgers on Jan 15, 2023 19:49:25 GMT 1, Great to read this thread, an interesting art based discussion no less.
I like to frame a few bits myself, small items mainly, post cards etc.
Brampton Framing I have found great to cut to size Museum Glass, quite inexpensive on these smaller items, and well worth it, would certainly recommend.
