Anyone out there still buying art?, by Wearology on Jun 11, 2023 13:33:40 GMT 1, If you look at the banner on top of this page and see the names of the 17 urban artists that are supposedly the most famous and topical to the Urban Art scene 2006 - 2023, than one could have a better understanding of the rapidly changing urban landscape. Does anyone else besides me think it is time to update this list and make it more relevant to the current urban art movement ? And if you do, who do you think your top 5 should be added and omitted ? Please list them alphabetically, so we don't go off on another topic - like rankings.
I will go first:
Add: Kobra Noir Os Gemeos Pejac STIK
Omit: Bugs Dolk Eine Parra Peterson
Banksy (Active) Buggs (Active) DFace (Active) Dolk (Active) Eine (Active) Faile (Active) Fairey (Active) Hirst (Active) Invader (Active) Kaws (Active) Miller (Active) Parra (Active) Peterson (Active) Whatson (Active) Basquiat (Deceased) Haring (Deceased) Warhol (Deceased)

I always just assumed the names on the top were in some way tied to the holdings of our creator, Silk.
Anyhow, I wonder how this discussion relates to whether anyone is still buying art.

Dumb question maybe, but does that ranking based on verified sales data not directly reflect what people are buying?
That ranking was simply an attempt to move that particular part of the discussion back towards an empirical market based approach and away from a more abstract discussion around which artists people like or don't like and which artists people believe are simply worthy of promotion or relegation from the masthead on merit alone. Apologies if you believe that was out of turn.

Dumb question maybe, but does that ranking based on verified sales data not directly reflect what people are buying? Yes your response does discuss what some people are buying. I was speaking more to Wearology's post which threw the discussion off on a separate unrelated tangent. The initial aim of this thread was to see if forum members were still buying art or all trying to liquidate.

Yes your response does discuss what some people are buying. I was speaking more to Wearology's post which threw the discussion off on a separate unrelated tangent. The initial aim of this thread was to see if forum members were still buying art or all trying to liquidate. The data used to create that ranking reflects the global auction market and simply the aggregated values of art that is being 'bought' at auction in 2023.
In your original post when you asked "is anyone still buying art these days?" I interpreted this widely to include all collectors acquiring works from auctions globally and did not restrict it to the subset of forum members only. This is what has led to the slight confusion.

Anyone out there still buying art?, by Dive Jedi on Jun 14, 2023 20:27:51 GMT 1, I've been buying a LOT less.
Brexit made buying much more expensive, import tax sucks and shipping increased a lot too. So that's not much fun anymore.
Markets are down, so selling isn't much fun either. So basicly laying low a bit and only sell once in a while.

Anyone out there still buying art?, by Lord Elrond on Jun 14, 2023 20:33:17 GMT 1, While compiling the aggregate global auction sales data for each of the listed artists earlier I did notice that, subject to a couple of exceptions and factoring in the fact that we are as yet are only half way through 2023, the overall sales volumes are lower than in 2021 and 2022. This is of course a rather obvious conclusion but seeing it in the raw data while compiling a list was illuminating.
At this time I am personally cautious but I also believe that there are now many good and unique opportunities out there.

Anyone out there still buying art?, by Lord Elrond on Jul 1, 2023 15:53:56 GMT 1, If you look at the banner on top of this page and see the names of the 17 urban artists that are supposedly the most famous and topical to the Urban Art scene 2006 - 2023, than one could have a better understanding of the rapidly changing urban landscape. Does anyone else besides me think it is time to update this list and make it more relevant to the current urban art movement ? And if you do, who do you think your top 5 should be added and omitted ? Please list them alphabetically, so we don't go off on another topic - like rankings. I will go first: Add: Kobra Noir Os Gemeos Pejac STIK Omit: Bugs Dolk Eine Parra Peterson Banksy (Active) Buggs (Active) DFace (Active) Dolk (Active) Eine (Active) Faile (Active) Fairey (Active) Hirst (Active) Invader (Active) Kaws (Active) Miller (Active) Parra (Active) Peterson (Active) Whatson (Active) Basquiat (Deceased) Haring (Deceased) Warhol (Deceased) This forum is focussed mainly on the market for artworks and most discussions are around the value of artworks. A better way to categorise this list of artists and the relative importance of each one could be to instead rank the artists according to the size of their public auction markets using publicly available auction data. The adjusted ranking below is based on the aggregate hammer price of all sold lots of each artist in global auctions at the time of writing so far in 2023. ยฃ87.2m Jean-Michel Basquiat ยฃ43.1m Andy Warhol ยฃ14.5m Banksy ยฃ8.6m Damien Hirst ยฃ8.5m Keith Haring ยฃ3.6m KAWS ยฃ802k Thierry Noir ยฃ672k STIK ยฃ434k Shepard Fairey ยฃ384k Invader ยฃ377k Harland Miller ยฃ74k Pejac ยฃ25k Cleon Peterson ยฃ16k Martin Watson ยฃ14k Dolk ยฃ11k D*Face ยฃ10k Kobra ยฃ5k Ben Eine ยฃ4k Faile ยฃ1k Parra ยฃ1k Miss Bugs ยฃ0 Os Gemeos* *This large painting (est. ยฃ150,000 - 200,000) at auction with Phillips in London in just over two weeks will get the twins comfortably off the mark in 2023! Link: www.phillips.com/detail/os-gemeos/UK010423/100 I kept my eye on the Os Gemeos painting that I referenced above. The painting was passed at Phillips yesterday. Os Gemeos remain on ยฃ0 in 2023.

I loved the collaboration between Banksy and Os Gemeos as well as their mural work in New York. Os Gemeos are an absolute favourite of mine. The data simply shows that the Os Gemeos auction market has registered ยฃ0 in 2023. This thread is a discussion of what people are and are not buying in 2023.

Anyone out there still buying art?, by Cardiff on Jul 1, 2023 20:51:35 GMT 1, It's less to me about a lack of demand/popularity and more to me about a lack of availability...quality OSG works don't come up for sale often.

This is a good perspective. A data driven approach shows that only one Os Gemeos work has come to auction in 2023. The sole piece to date in 2023 is the very high quality 2 metre by 3 metre painting that was available at Phillips last week and passed. The sell through rate for Os Gemeos in 2023 is 0%.
On the flip-side the data from 2022 shows more activity and points to a 100% sell through rate and a turnover of ยฃ509k for Os Gemeos. In 2021 turnover for Os Gemeos was only ยฃ14k and the sell through rate was lower at 40%. Your point could be validated or invalidated through further analysis of the sort of Os Gemeos works that were passed in 2021 because it is a high proportion.

This place is obsessed with daily changes in auction results of artists. Trends for established artists are viewed over years. If you are investing in art you cannot take such a short term view. There are also many other factors to consider from timing, condition, auction house, marketing, financial climate, subject matter, external manipulation and the list goes on.
Its far more complex than simply looking at the last auction result and crying Buy or Sell.
I am reminded of a very famous Basquiat that was owned by Bowie (Air Power). It sold in 1989 for $350k shortly after his death. Bowie then bought it 6 years later for $132k. Lastly it was sold in 2016 for ยฃ7m. I thesis in itself!!!

The first public auction record for Os Gemeos dates back to 2007. I can conduct a longer term 16 year analysis of the Os Gemeos market and go more in depth into the performance of individual works and categories of works. The passed Os Gemeos painting at Phillips last week did actually receive enhanced marketing in the form of a video feature and lot essay but to no avail. The data shows that auction turnover for Os Gemoes to date in 2023 is ยฃ0 and the sell through rate is 0%. The fuller analysis over 16 years will be interesting and will bring further insights.

Definitely worth doing but my point was not specifically about OS Gemeos. I do not own any of their works and have not followed their market so I have no idea of their commercial performance in relation to investment.
I think they are incredible artists and the streets of the world are a better place as a result of their work.

Their work on the street is just magical. I am always slightly more drawn to their earlier human scale work in Sao Paulo as opposed to their later massive murals around the globe. Their depictions in Sao Paulo felt like they were alive. It was groundbreaking work.

Anyone out there still buying art?, by Art Collector 11 on Jul 1, 2023 23:24:49 GMT 1, Iโm surprised I do not see Bast in this list. He has worked with Banksy, Faile, Sickboy, Lazarides and many others. Sadly he is no longer around to make anymore pieces. His varied artwork always still shows that you know it is a โBastโ piece like you know when it is a Basquiat, Haring or Banksy just from its esthetic.
