Best activist street artist, by Jesty on May 31, 2023 16:00:40 GMT 1, I really love when politics and good cause meet art, so I'm was wondering who are the best to follow in this field?
Of course people like Ai Weiwei, Blu, Escif, but who else, may be less known?
Thanks!

Best activist street artist, by Jesty on Jun 8, 2023 9:03:43 GMT 1, Thanks for all suggestions! I know Sam3, while I don't know Kennard, and I have to say that it is interesting.
I'm also following this guy since a long time: www.instagram.com/misbibo/ he did a lot of woodcut prints about protests in Taiwan. I also bought his book that arrived today at home: http://instagram.com/p/CTEquwinLEY

Best activist street artist, by cheffe stefano on Jun 8, 2023 10:25:48 GMT 1, hello, nice thread, have a look at Cibo's work, he is an Italian guy who covers swastikas and Nazi-fascist hate messages with food, it's very funny what he does, he developed this project years and years ago and continues to do it consistently over time The project can hardly be put on canvas or any other media other than walls, so I don't know and I don't think it has any commercial value (if you are interested in that too)

Best activist street artist, by alberti on Jun 8, 2023 12:55:46 GMT 1, Peter Kennard Darren Cullen aka Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives.
C215? Hmmm... not sure if he can be tagged as "activist" as per such since he worked a lot jointly with the government, institutions, etc. He is a "soft-activist", preaching social justice and non violence, etc. and he used to mingle a lot with politicians. This is so French, we used to call them "Socialist/left caviar" (that's for the old generation who protested in the street when you and now live luxury live ("one day reefer, one day cigar")... but nowadays, they are called "bobo". Still activism but so innocent and naive; often paying tributes to politicians, left celebs, etc.. A bit like Obey... Also see JR, enriching himself doing all his project under a Trust, and yet when I asked years ago for finances of his Trust, he laughed at me... he is hanging with Bono in NY where he bought a studio, he bought his printing house in Printing to flood the market for the Parisian "bobo". Go back to his initial pledge, promising art center in slums/ghettos, he never met them, so sad. All these fake artivists meddling with politicians reminds of thee "social art" in the East block, they are not better.
Ai Weiwei, I hate this guy, sorry. He has a big ego and sadly his message are often lost behind his ego and his hard fans
Is Kidult dead?? This guy was really anti-corporates and anti-establishment... his message was a bit similar to Banksy when he started ("brandalism"). But then, in a much more confuse way, juxtaposing killed kids in war with brands in video, what a mess! But he had a message and was doing crazy stuff.... until he finally join them - blue galleries, art show, etc. Hard to do both, isn't it ? Playing the black-block /anarchist card while selling his art three digits... see Zevs to compare, he didn't bother, he moved pretty quickly to galleries, etc. which is worse. At least, Kidult tried
Princess Hijab - She stopped, too many arrestations I guess
Same for Poster Boy in US, got tired being arrested.
Ron English is a propaganda-artist but not street art as per such.
There are still plenty of different activist art groups. Banksy paid tribute to many of them, including that pre-Pussy riot group putting whole chicken in their va***a... was it Viona?? For sure, repressive countries generate artivists.
Boniface Mwangi (totally unknown to many) but he won so many prizes for his graffitis (Ducth Royal prize, Yoko Ono prize) and was named amongst the most influential person of the year (next to big names like Bill Gates). Actually, Google CEO, Amazon CEO, US politicians and many more went to see him in his studio (thanks for him, otherwise he would have been dead or arrested already). He did so many stuff, his motto was "change social life through art" - he did graffiti showing politicians as vulture fucking dry people, burned 100 of coffins of parliament while pouring liters of pig blood in the street, releasing painted donkeys in town with vulgar languages, etc. - www.facebook.com/BonifaceMwangiBM/posts/pfbid026K8t7MbZ1inY4AnSvv4apch86fFNziQQNHRP5a4YkMrUX57y5aXTyahjL5coUZzYl
There are less and less real real propaganda-activist street artists. Majority of the ones doing it are doing it for fame and get followers, polemical art is a great way to get audience and interest... but if you scracth a bit, it is hypocrite and bullshit.
One thing is sure, street art as we knew it in the 80s-90s and early 2000s is now totally dead (in Western countries). Banksy still do a lot, he is great and so clever... forcing, in a way, all his right-, xenophobic, Brexit- buyers to contribute for good causes
