Dealing with forum members...., by anthoz on May 19, 2008 15:37:52 GMT 1, Guys, Would genuinely like to know the experiences of anyone that has conducted sales or swaps with other members of the forum. After being a member close to 12 months i decided to conduct my first transaction, as i rarely part with my art. I have to say thus far each and every person i have dealt with has been a let down, unreliable and mostly dishonest. I have agreed 4 sales for the same piece and each and everytime, at the last minute, people withdraw offers, change their mind on swaps, make excuses or simply ignore me. These members are often well established and have been here for a long time, i will not name names i am simply curious of others experieneces to help explain why pretty much everyone ive dealt with has been either a wannabe or a pisstaker. My conclusions are thus: 1. Most people here are (without using the F word) trying to use the forum to increase their personal wealth and not in the least bit interested in the procurement and display of urban art. (flippers....doh sorry i nearly didnt use the F word) 2. Transactions with fellow members, both old and new, should be taken with a huge pinch of salt and with caution 3. Im bitter ;D
**UPDATE** just completed my first deal with dogant, true gent, proper art fan and a really honest, sound guy...cheers mate

I've had many very good, very easy transactions on this forum, and never once had a problem up until the last 3-4 months when most of them have fallen apart for the reasons stated in your post.

Dealing with forum members...., by streetgirl on May 19, 2008 15:46:12 GMT 1, Feel for you anthoz. Just look at afroken's thread - he's been trying to sell 3 Banksy's for an age now and has been let down on numerous occasions.
I have successfully completed about 5 8/9 (sorry just remembered about 4 more that I'd forgotten about as were given on as gifts) different transactions forum members. I'd say 75% were swift and smooth. The others took a little coersion e.g. 'Are we doing the deal or what?'.
I think the problem is often people get excited and go rushing in, knowing they don't honestly have the funds or the intention.
It doesn't help you I know. But I think we've all been there to a degree.

Dealing with forum members...., by Agent Provocateur on May 19, 2008 16:35:58 GMT 1, Just a little ray of sunshine...
I have dealt with about 20 to 30 members, some who have been sent free pieces, but the majority are people who have purchased pieces off me. Some are long term members and others very new, but the great thing is all the transactions so far have gone smoothly ... ahhhh need some wood to touch ;D.
On top of that, not only has the communication been great and every one polite, but I have only asked for payment once their package has arrived safe and sound in one piece. OK, you may call me naive on this one, but again everyone has paid up without any fuss or chasing.
There are good people out there .

Dealing with forum members...., by doublehelix on May 19, 2008 16:55:22 GMT 1, Prices seem to gradually be going south at the moment, so that might be making people more twitchy than usual. I've had generally good experiences on here so far.

Dealing with forum members...., by ricosg11 on May 19, 2008 17:07:03 GMT 1, never had a problem per se. But thats how it goes with any sales. People in general are stupid and unreliable. If 10 people express interest and one comes through...just the way things go. Dont be discouraged.

Dealing with forum members...., by dotdot on May 19, 2008 17:20:22 GMT 1, I'd like to add, while caution is used quite a bit due to the amount of spam which undoubtably comes of a forum with a few thousand people, I've bought from a few and sold to a few folks - no trouble, no delays and no issues of any note barring a tube crushing which was resolved by a very helpful artist.
good luck with future transactions.

Dealing with forum members...., by themightyreds on May 19, 2008 17:25:27 GMT 1, Not had many dealings with Forum members but last week did a piece-for-piece trade with no cash involved that went like clockwork.
A name-and-shame section shouldn't be a problem either.

but i never tried any deals with other members as i heard too many bad stories! until a couple of weeks ago when Sherlock Holmes was selling his mr jago, all i can say is that guy is sound! really good guy, i must have got it within 2 days of payment, i think it was in the post the same day i paid on paypal! highly recommended! (think he now goes under another name as hes an artist but i forget what it is!)

Dealing with forum members...., by bored with screen names on May 19, 2008 17:27:52 GMT 1, I've never had a problem with a deal that actually went through, but there are a lot of potential buyers that will PM with interest, then ignore any followups sent (it's okay if they don't like your price, but a PM saying so would be nice), or will lose interest within a day or decide they can't spend the money. Can be pretty annoying!

Dealing with forum members...., by dmandpenfold on May 19, 2008 17:30:12 GMT 1, i had a forum member promise to send me money to paypal a couple of weeks ago for an original denning, so i spent an hour wrapping it up in board etc as it has glass, i also put in a few extras. then i saw him posting looking for other bits so pm'd him. sorry i think i changed my mind!! ahhhhhhhhhhhh but have dealt with a few good guys as mike says its got a lot worse recently. i agree there should be a thread
Yep a thread would be helpful, the original respect system was meant to help here, however that got abused by the same dickheads who mess about on sales no doubt.
If you name and shame at least everyone knows why and if you disagree at least you get a chance to respond, it's all very open so people would no doubt be much more careful before casting wild accusations around.. that said it could also descend into a mother of all slanging match

Dealing with forum members...., by spirit on May 19, 2008 17:32:24 GMT 1, A name/shame/good trades/bad trades thread may sound a bit harsh but it sounds like it's becoming more necessary and I think it would quickly put a stop to a lot of the messing around that's going on around here now.

I think it's true that the last 2 or 3 months things have deteriorated. One guy in particular took all my banks details and I never heard from them again, which really really sucks.

Dealing with forum members...., by luvlyjubly on May 19, 2008 17:39:26 GMT 1, Ive had a few problems of my own too... Many people do go back on offers but that is to be expected to some extent, as people do get cold feet or over estimate the liquidity of their own personal cashflow. So that issue doesn't bother me a great deal. However recently I also have made purchases, only to be ripped off as I have not recieved any COA's on 2 pieces and was assured I would be. So deals on here not all good!! not all bad either, but I for one will certainly be approaching with caution in the future.

Dealing with forum members...., by dmandpenfold on May 19, 2008 17:40:10 GMT 1, the other good thing about a thread is we'd get to see the same old lame excuses time and time again which would provide some amusement, at least those that deal poorly would have to start getting inventive.
and of course if you are likely to get named then you would also take care to conduct your business in a better manner in the first place and perhaps not be quite so blase.
One thing i would have to say of course is "no posting of PM's" it's just not the done thing

Dealing with forum members...., by Heavyconsumer on May 19, 2008 17:40:40 GMT 1, I'm finding it a little tough to sell too but then I'm quite new myself, so maybe that's understandable! One deal has been excellent and I'm waiting to hear that the piece arrived healthy! It was a high value piece too, so I thank the buyer for his confidence. The other deal fell apart after I was led right up the garden path and the guy going silent when I thought we were dotting Is and crossing Ts. This also led to my missing the Dreweatts deadline for these pieces (double gutted as it looks like a brilliant sale). I would guess he's responsible for plenty of other let downs too as his name pops up as an interested party quite frequently - I can't name him though.
I think the lesson I've learned is, don't count your chickens before they've hatched and take every deal with a pinch of salt until the cash is in the bank! Also, keep a mental note of who the "f**karounds" are and don't deal with them again.

Dealing with forum members...., by yapsey on May 19, 2008 17:42:38 GMT 1, i've had a couple of dealings with forum members that have been really pleasant. - the key is good communication - but i guess that rather obvious. although, i have (if i can be honest...) backed out of one deal - just because my financial circumstances changed - sometimes people genuinely have to back out.

Dealing with forum members...., by dmandpenfold on May 19, 2008 17:45:39 GMT 1, Backing out occasionally is fair enough if something happens, but if you are a serial renegade then at least it would show up.
All i can say is if you have to back out be honest, communicate with the seller asap, don't ignore them or go quiet and dont do it unless you really are stuck, good karma will always come around if you are genuine
