Investment choice, by stender on May 26, 2008 14:42:04 GMT 1, I'm trying to persuade the wife to speculate with some of my 3 year olds savings, arguing that she's getting sod all interest in the bank and would be better of investing in some art. She agreed on ยฃ2k. So I am thinking signed colour trolleys?
Any recommendations on a good investment?
Please PM as I don't want to assist flippers!
I thank You.

banksy is probably the safest bet, but with great risks comes great rewards ....
saying that the whole market could crumble, and ur wife will hit u in the face

So will probably have to be worth about a million then so she can go to uni or use for a house deposit. ;D
Kaupthing edge, 6.5% interest. ? sorry don't get it?

Investment choice, by Eton Groover on May 26, 2008 15:09:15 GMT 1, Agree with Slammer.
If you are going to buy as an investment take a chance on a few originals (that you like - important- cos you do have to look at them) by up and coming artists.
Prints are at their limit now. I can't see people paying thousands and thousands for Banksy prints (of very large issue) in the next ten or twenty years.
You may get lucky with originals, and even if not, you can enjoy looking at them for the next fifteen years.

I agree on the canvas but most of the artists I like I have missed the boat on. I have only recently got the art buying bug having needed a couple of pieces for my front room. Now moved onto my spare room! but I am still learning who I like. I am growing a list of my favs but theres still loads Im not aware of.
Suggestions of sub ยฃ2k available canvases would be appreciated. ;D

Anthony Lister would be my choice. New Image still have some canvas diptychs from his latest show available at $1400 per set;

Investment choice, by Eton Groover on May 26, 2008 17:37:21 GMT 1, Where is the stock market going at the mo...... nowhere to be precise, and the only pepole who really make money ae the ones who cream of the %ages whether it is rising or not.
ยฃ2k, even invested soundly, will only be worth 4k in ten years time... it might be enough to fill your car up then, but not much else, let elone secure your childs future.
Investment is about balance and diversity, take a risk with some of the money and keep some of it safe.

I recommend Meldex international i doubled my money in two weeks a few months back on this little puppy just wish bought more shares. Another possible investment would be the bookies hugely exciting and probably better odd's than anything possitive happening within the stock market.

stocks are a mugs Game unless you have friends in the know or deep pockets to begin with. I speak from experience having been a futures trader and still work for one.
I have better returns betting on greyhounds at least that uses some logic.

Investment choice, by sahoria on May 26, 2008 17:57:38 GMT 1, my suggestion is find something you like and invest into it... stock market is static at the moment unless your investing in gold/copper - food exports...etc...
as someone said you will have to look at it for few years so better to get something you enjoy rather than something you hate....
i wouldnt say this scene is a bubble just yet... people who visit forums / know anything about art are really a very small pecentage of the population... i sometimes forget and chat away about artists at work and no one has a clue what i am on about... for example in bristol and everyone heard of banksy but many never heard of nick walker...
reason i think there are many more years left to this so called movement is because the majority of people involved buy because they appreciate art rather than make quick buck... and it is evolving out of the uk which i think is fantastic... can call myself a late starter but im looking forward to the next few years and what happens next...the discovery of that new artist which in your own opinion blows everyone else out of the water... that to me is more exciting... im sure when the time comes you will make the right decisions...good luck....s

Thats a very good point fortunately for me thats the only thing i bought into and purely on the say so of my boss bless him. But i agree its stupid to be attempting to be a profiteer in todays financial climate unless you are very good at it.

Sad that you're posting on an art forum about an artist deep to many of our hearts - and your concern is making a good return on your investment.
Buy the colored Trolleys if you like the art - not because you think it might appreciate x%

Investment choice, by stender on May 26, 2008 18:46:25 GMT 1, I will only buy art that I like. This post however is about a punt on an up and coming. There are artists liked on here that I wouldn't hang in my toilet personally but if the concensus like it then chances are it will appreciate.
I know people don't like talking monetary on here and I did expect some flack but the truth is we all want our art to increase in value be it to sell at profit, be security for the future or to fund that more expensive purchase.

Buy my elph if you want! Ha

Investment choice, by Eton Groover on May 26, 2008 19:11:05 GMT 1, Yeah, people get all purist when it comes to talking money on here.
Fact is art has always been an investment, it starts off cheap (Van Gogh never sold a painting - cliche i know but whatever) and then it moves on when others catch on. If you only like the aesthetic value why not just buy posters of the pictures you like, or the many "banksy" canvasses you can get on ebay for a few pound.
It's about prestige, and owning something that other people want.
The moment someone printed out a graffiti piece in limited numbers and sold it, the nature of street art was changed. The more people catch on the more the prices go up.
An unfortunate by product of a great scene.

Investment choice, by Heavyconsumer on May 26, 2008 19:18:14 GMT 1, For sub-ยฃ2k prices there are loads and loads of great options and whatever your taste you'll find a great selection of work to suit it. However I have absolutely no idea which artists will make you money over 10 years. Neate is the only (imo) guarantee. I genuinely believe he'll be sold for fortunes one day, but with works already 10 times+ what you want to spend, it's a no no, just as it is for me!
I adore many of the works of Nathan Spoor (stunning abstract and surreal paintings) and his commissions/originals range from about USD$800 to about $6000, I also really like the developing style of Allison Torneros, who has originals available from USD$200 to $1000 but I reckon you're buying decoration not investment as I've never read a comment on his work anywhere and stumbled into it myself online, while she is still at UCLA studying the arts. I think Lister has a reasonable chance of proving a sound investment at today's prices. Basically it's a crap-shoot and your money is much more soundly invested in a good savings account, as you can never be sure if anyone will want to buy your art in 10 years time. Savings accounts are guaranteed.
I hear there are some boiler rooms selling good stock in 3d TV companies and dehydrated water tablets!!!
