Shill Bidding on the bay., by Zippy on Jul 24, 2008 21:29:48 GMT 1, Maybe I am a bit naive but with prices dropping recently there seems to be a lot of shill bidding going on. For example (apologies if I am wrong!) but there is a nice soupcan finishing tonight Item number:190237799316
Bidder 4, newly registered, has put in 3 further bids and the bidding history seems 'odd'. Now I maybe wrong as I'm no expert but i fancied this print but will now leave well alone.
Same happened on a nice Adam Neate piece I was watching a few days ago.

It is almost impossible to identify or stop. Things may look odd, but you never know. Also, technically, if the bidder is using a proxy server, you will never be able to make the 'same' computer correlation. Bottom line, don't bid more then you were willing to spend when you snipe. Or, bid once and walk away until it's done.

In today's day and age all you need is a blackberry or i-phone and bingo - set up your own shill bidding empire.
As long as you do not connect via your own wireless internet server and use the 3G internet thingy ebay don't have a clue.
If it smells of fish and it aint a fish - don't buy

Agree.
I see no benefit to hideing people who are bidding on items.

Shill Bidding on the bay., by craigf on Jul 24, 2008 22:03:53 GMT 1, There was a similar print the other week, three or four bids by a newbie when they were already winning the auction. Without going into details the new bidder won ยฃ20 over my gf's bid. The next highest bidder was ยฃ300 lower still. She then got a second change offer at the value ยฃ20 less than the winning bid. Even though it was still a very good price she decided not to go ahead as it seemed a bit smelly

Shill Bidding on the bay., by Harveyn on Jul 24, 2008 22:26:59 GMT 1, Zippy you have touched a nerve now.....
I would say that 90% of auctions that I look at on Ebay have at one point been shilled. It completely Fu*ks me off to the point I trust none of them.
Ebay will kill the whole concept if they do not remove private listing options and it if they do not police this properly. I know shill bidding in the short term leads to more money for Ebay but long term its suicide.
This really, really annoys me.
I am currently looking at a piece that has been up for sale on Ebay three or four times. Several bids of over ยฃ6k have been declined yet the seller is happy to sell it to me now for ยฃ5k. Fu*king joke.
What the Fu*k happened to honesty.
Sorry rant over.

Shill Bidding on the bay., by Ged on Jul 24, 2008 23:04:03 GMT 1, If it smells of fish and it aint a fish - don't buy
If it smells of fish and it IS a fish....don't buy. Fish should either smell of the sea or nothing at all
Once was the day that you could bid on your own auction
Shill bidding is fraud and should be dealt with accordingly. It's no different to price fixing, imo, that has gone on (and no doubt continues to go on) between retailers, airlines, etc etc and this has resulted in heavy fines. Ebay need to take a much stricter and heavier stance with this.
Statement from ebay:
Many factors will be considered when determining whether shill bidding has occurred. These factors are carefully weighed. In the end, only bidders determined to be shills (based on the evidence) are suspended.

Shill Bidding on the bay., by pfffffffffft on Jul 25, 2008 1:10:57 GMT 1, convinced the d*face DSTQ is shilled. The high bid was sitting at 5999 when the reserve was 6000. I had planned to bid on that piece but it's obviously shilled and I wont do it.
On top of that I emailed the seller about his/her reserve. He stated it was far higher than 6K yet when it hit the 6K today it met reserve.
shady shady shady...damn ebay.

I think when there is a best offer option, once the listing has finished, the best offer values that actually show up as the counteroffers. So the ยฃ6k offers were more than likely those submitted back to the bidders by the seller. Means the seller may have simply lowered thier expectations saying they'll accept ยฃ5k. I'm 90% sure this is the case, but could be wrong.

That's absolutely right. They may have offered 4k and he's countered with 6k, which they have rejected...

Shill Bidding on the bay., by Harveyn on Jul 25, 2008 12:19:01 GMT 1, Your right about counter-bids which can make shill bidding tricky to spot.
Example (and if this belongs to someone on here then I apologize but I would still like an explanation).
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150273604667
Banksy us Toxic Marys have been selling at under ยฃ700 pounds so why would someone bid ยฃ1100 (and yes I know its framed but even so). The bidder registered this week and has zero feedback.......
I think this thread should be used to warn people of shill bidding. Whilst its easier to spot in a downward market (not infallible I know) it still catches people out.
