My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 5, 2008 22:36:45 GMT 1, First of all I'd like to doff my cap to all of you out there that have been creating stencils for a while - I never realised how much time and effort goes into creating what is in principle such a simple concept
Anyway, here's are my first attempts at stencil-making. Sadly I haven't had a chance to spray it yet, although my box of paint has arrived and the canvases are primed and ready to go. I was simply so excited at actually finishing the cutting that I wanted to share it and get your feedback
So without further ado - Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Eff-Ive - The Stencil!
The canvas will be 24" x 24" just so you get an idea of the size of the piece and fingers crossed I'll get to knock one or two up at the weekend, so I'll post some pictures once it's done ;D

My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 9, 2008 16:15:48 GMT 1, well, I eventually found some time to try and spray one of these up. Having never used spray paint as a medium before I'm glad I did it as I learnt so many things doing this.
It's by no means perfect (it was a first attempt after all) but practise makes perfect so we'll see how the next few turn out, but it was certainly a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon ;D

My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 9, 2008 17:28:45 GMT 1, Thats a lovely bit of stencil work there mr aitch Whats the dimensions ? bet some of those details on the crown took a bit of time !!
Cheers SPQR - coming from someone as talented as you that means a lot mate. ;D
The stencil is around 21" from top to bottom and sits on a 24" x 24" canvas
Yeah it took me quite a bit of time and a substantial amount of expletives when cutting the crown - I think it was a bit too detailed for a first attempt, although the overall effect works well I think.
I think the hardest part was working out which bloody cap to use I just got a mix-up of caps and didn't have a clue what colour did what but it's all part of the learning curve I suppose
I've got to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have already started work on a new design

My First Stencil, by chablis on Feb 9, 2008 17:56:40 GMT 1, What happened to the F5? Seriously though it is looking good. I like to see the suffering of an artist in a picture, so keep up the level of detail and add a extra couple of layers. I
Look forward to seeing the finished picture.

My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 9, 2008 20:06:12 GMT 1, Yeah, I realised that I missed the F5 off. This was becasue I originally cut it out in the wrong place on the card. I covered it when I sprayed it up with the intention of placing it in the corner but totally forgot about it - doh!
Anyway, I'm going to spray it over and try it with black instead of the darker red in the original, so we'll see how that one turns out

My First Stencil, by umajets on Feb 12, 2008 13:10:18 GMT 1, Nice work Retro and MisterAitch. I'm enjoying having a go at stencils - it's a real departure from how i normally produce art. (everything is computer and graphics tablet for me these days). Nice to get a bit hands on and messy - quite theraputic really!
Here's a canvas I just attempted of an old drawing - just to learn the techniques really. The black layer got messed up a bit - trial and error I guess.

My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 16, 2008 18:06:28 GMT 1, Well done Retro and Umajets - two totally differnt styles.
Here's my second attempt at Eff-Ive. I learned a little bit more about can control and nozzle selection, but still can't get over how much there is to consider.
I sprayed over the first attempt to try a grey and black colour scheme which I think works a lot better - still no F5 in the corner yet
I'm really looking forward to next weekend now ;D
SPQR - you were right - cutting stencils is addictive. I've a couple of new designs on the cutting board as we speak

My First Stencil, by misteraitch on Feb 16, 2008 20:22:23 GMT 1, Very very nice. Whats next? Cheers Snakes much appreciated!
Well, I intend to practise this one quite a few more times and get a bit more fluid in the can control etc. since two attempts doth not a master make and I'm still making silly mistakes. Sadly my damn day job doesn't give me the chance to practise as much as I'd like
I've also just recieved some Montana paint - the first few attempts were using Belton and I'd like to see if there's much of a difference in drying times etc.
As for the next artwork, I'm currently cutting two stencils at the moment. The first is a 5-colour piece entitled 'Oil for Blood' that I've had sitting in a folder on my computer for over a year now, and the second... well...I'm keeping that one under wraps for the time being

My First Stencil, by snakes on Feb 16, 2008 20:49:36 GMT 1, Just out of interest by do people use airbrushes at all when doing stencils as opposed to spray can paint?
(sorry to sound like a punter but I would have thought the spray would be more even and precise with an airbrush)..

My First Stencil, by Ripper1331 on Feb 16, 2008 22:33:45 GMT 1, You can but the spray can is faster, more even coverage and allows for a much thicker layer of paint. It's also much easier for clean up.

Nice work with the stencils misteraitch - give the montana paint much longer to dry than the Belton and it can be a bit tricky in colder damp weather.

What are you trying to say about our lovely North East weather? ;D Seriously though - cheers for the advice ripper1331 - very much appreciated indeed
And of course thank you to everyone who has offered up their advice, criticisms and support.
It certainly fills in the time while I'm waiting for my next lot of stamps to be delivered ;D
