Sell or not to sell, by sally77 on May 9, 2009 20:38:34 GMT 1, I have a quandary.
We have two Banksy prints and we're getting married in December
Queen Victoria - unsigned, no prov Gold Sale - signed, can't find receipt but bought from Tom Tom near Covent Garden in 2003
We have a buyer for the Queen Victoria for £1,500. However, I thought the Golf Sale was worth about £6,000 but after some phoning around, it seems one gallery thinks it's worth closer to £11,000. It's tempting to sell for the wedding but seems daft to lose a Banksy for the expenditure of one day.
We have a 2 and a half year old and I thought it would be good to keep it the family and pass it down to him in years to come. Would welcome any advice.
Thanks
Sal

Sell or not to sell, by neale on May 9, 2009 20:52:25 GMT 1, Ithink you would struggle to get £11k for Golf Sale in the current climate, your estimate is about right imo. I would keep it personally, but if you are bored of it, or its sitting in a folio, then sell it and enjoy a great wedding day without running up a big debt. Congrats by the way!

Sell or not to sell, by lobster on May 9, 2009 21:55:38 GMT 1, If you are waying up what you will get for the print versus what it means to you then you need to understand what it is worth.
The last Golf Sale sold at auction for £1875 which included the buyers premium. When you say you had the print "valued" at £11K without sounding patronising do you mean you have seen ones for sale at that price ? Their are lots of Banksy`s for sale at frankly ludicrous prices in London galleries but who is buying them ?
I think current market value for your print is somewhere between £2K - £3K based on the auction result and what recent Bansy`s have been sold for on here / ebay - also you need to consider that finding someone who is willing to actually buy it and wont mess you around can be a struggle. On that basis I am sure you would rather hang onto it ?
Have a great day whatever you decide.

The golf sale that sold at auction was unsigned though, no?
Signed golf sale is worth considerably more than 2k-3k even in current market.

Sell or not to sell, by dotdot on May 9, 2009 22:33:37 GMT 1, 11k for golf signed.
a few thoughts....
with prov ? - perhaps >> a few months ago with the wind blowing in a hot direction. (max on the bay ever circa 4.5k)
now ? different story.
tom tom !! - means bad to some folks - you need prov.
fire an email to pc and get your prov / coa sorted - shouldn't be too difficult - then take gs to a gallery and get something like 11k you'd be doing well.
ebay - perhaps something slightly different (ironic).
golf is still a classic so don't worry if you don't need to sell. (qv not so much so imho)
good luck and have a cool wedding.

Are 'freak results' not the norm these days?

Sell or not to sell, by lobster on May 9, 2009 23:07:40 GMT 1, And your going to pull the money up and pay that are you Graeme - no didn`t think so ?
If you actually read my post it ended in "I am sure you would rather hang onto it" so please dont accuse me of trying to mislead someone into selling it cheaply as I find that very offensive.
A couple of days ago a Gold Flag went on enbay for £3700 - take off the ebay fees and the seller MAY get £3500 - this is a print of only 112 with a great story behind it. Last week a soup can ( 1 of 10) went for £3300 , A "Formica Flag" for £5100, a VERY rare trolleys £4200 etc etc and of course EVERY time these sell for these sorts of prices someone like Graeme posts what a bargain it was etc etc - are these ALL "freak results" ?
All I am trying to do is explain to the poster what the true value of this print is and actually on that basis surely this can only deter them from selling ?
I have a large collection of signed Banksy`s and trust me nothing would please me more than a golf sale be worth £11k or even £5K but this is a total fantasy in this market and you will NEVER get that type of money.

Sell or not to sell, by e15makaveli on May 9, 2009 23:15:42 GMT 1, i see laz shop has a signed golf sale and want £8k for it. i think its worth around £5k tops in the times we are in at the moment but as you probably well know, its only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, be that £100 or £10,000 so id just take what i thought it was worth, or if you are in major need then take what you can?

Sell or not to sell, by puppyjuppy on May 9, 2009 23:37:16 GMT 1, have to be honest here, i would tend to agree with lobster on this one.
the gallery that is "saying" that it may be worth up to 11k - the print would have to have p.c provenance and it may take a long time before they actually sold it at anywhere near to that price at all - and how reputable is the gallery. Are we talking Carmichael or Hoody Art ?
If the laz shop has one at 8k, then it could be fair to say that between 4-5 grand would be more realistic and also going by previous auction results via artnet or expresso beans will give you a better idea of what you could expect to get for it in the current market.
it really isnt that relevant what they used to be worth - they are only ever worth what someone is prepared to pay and in all honestly, if you decide to sell them - i hope you get as much as you can - but 11 grand just isnt going to happen any time soon.
Good Luck with the sales and have a great wedding
Sorry if any offence taken

Sell or not to sell, by graeme501 on May 9, 2009 23:47:06 GMT 1, lobster i never said it was worth 11k, if you look at the results you have mentioned, i would put the barcode ahead of the gold flag, and the signed soupcan, of which there were 28 colourways - the formica flags and trolleys are prints of which there are many editions of the image available, both over 1000 each although £4000 and £5000 is nothing to be sniffed at - these were not freak results, and probably the correct and fair price, but under £3000 for a barcode would be definetly undervaluing said print
i wouldnt be putting my money where my mouth is, as i never would spend anywhere near that on a print, but im sure that if this was up for sale, it could find a buyer in the region of £4-5k, as it is a classic rare banksy

Sell or not to sell, by sally77 on May 9, 2009 23:47:08 GMT 1, Thanks everyone. Very helpful. We're having a fairly small wedding so money wouldn't make or break the day itself. I think we'll keep hold of it for now. Sounds like the market has slowed up quite a lot and I am quite fond of it. I don't think we'd get 11k as the gallery in question hasn't sold it yet at that price and it really is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay. I paid about £149 for it at the time so anything we'd get in time is a bonus.
I am going to try and get proof of purchase though. Quick question (as I'm a bit new to this) what does IMO stand for? And what do you all think of the value of Banksy prints/credibility long term?

In My Opinion
you can get pest control to authenticate it for about £50 and then you wont have to worry about proof of purchase - if soemone is going to ever spend thousands on a banksy print, they will more than likely want it to come with pest control authenticity !!

Sally-
Congrats on your upcoming wedding first and foremost and welcome to the forum.
To answer your intitial questions here are my thoughts: - If you have a buyer for your signed Golf Sale for over 10K GBP sell, sell, sell! - In the current market I put the value of it some where between 4.5-6.5K GBP depending on condition and provenance. - You should no question get Pest Control Authentication - If you don't need the money I would recommend you hold onto it - as the market is at (or quite close to) the bottom, you seem to love the image, and your that is a very special thing to give to your son at some point.
Out of curiosity, does yours have a POW embossed stamp, any red or black Bansky stamp, and signed in pencil or pen? There are lots of variations as it was one of his earlier prints.
And here is a photo of mine (my first Banksy print):

Sell or not to sell, by lobster on May 10, 2009 11:24:29 GMT 1, Exactly my point but I think you are still being optamistic and I certainly dont see the relevance of Grahame banging on about "Barcode" !!!
A signed Love rat (a image of only 150) went for £3700 - take off the fees and they would have been left with around £3500 and the aggravation of going through EBAY and actually getting the money which lets face it is a mission in itself - how are you going to get £4K for a Golf Sale ? Yes great image but at the end of the day their were 750 (signed and unsigned) - personally I wouldn`t value this print any higher than say Grin Reaper and these are free available at sub £3K - from memory a VERY reliable guy at one up on here for £2600 a couple of weeks ago.
At the end of the day this is a clearly a GENUNINE poster and they have a big decision to make and I think it is totally irresponsible to let them think they will get this type of money because clearly they wont.
Finally, I turned down one of these at £3200 the other day so if anyone IS SERIOUSLY interested then PM me and I will pass you on the guys details.

Sell or not to sell, by elwheel on May 10, 2009 11:31:49 GMT 1, Thanks everyone. Sally- Congrats on your upcoming wedding first and foremost and welcome to the forum.
Question. RBK your print has the red BANKSY logo and the picture coach is showing doesn't. Whats the difference?

Sell or not to sell, by wiz on May 10, 2009 11:55:51 GMT 1, If you are serious then just sell it if you want / have to, if not then dont. Bang it into a good auction sale.

Sell or not to sell, by howlinjack on May 10, 2009 14:36:33 GMT 1, No - the last one that sold at Christies was indeed signed - I think if you got £3K you would be doing VERY well.
the one at christies was damaged and quite badly by all accounts.

Sell or not to sell, by howlinjack on May 10, 2009 15:07:54 GMT 1, A couple of days ago a Gold Flag went on enbay for £3700 - take off the ebay fees and the seller MAY get £3500 - this is a print of only 112 with a great story behind it. Last week a soup can ( 1 of 10) went for £3300 , A "Formica Flag" for £5100, a VERY rare trolleys £4200 etc etc and of course EVERY time these sell for these sorts of prices someone like Graeme posts what a bargain it was etc etc - are these ALL "freak results" ?
i totally agree with you on these being the right results but all of those images you mention exist in so many other forms so they are not as small as his early editions.
gold and formica flag also comes in sliver so thats a 1000 extra of that image the end paper trolleys is just a posh variant of the normal signed colour run of 650 plus its on shit paper. add that to 150 b/w signed and further 600 unsigned and thats quite a few as well soup can has loads of signed colourways to add to the original edition of 300
golf sale 600 unsigned 150 signed. i'd say thats a fair bit rarer and shouldn't be compared to more recent and far bigger variants
its a true classic and worth a bit more in my book.
ps sit on it for as long as you can unless, of course you need the dosh.
and remember theres quite a few people out there with a bit of spare cash and they don't necessarily frequent fleabay.
