Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by Lord Lucas Roham on Nov 19, 2019 12:43:59 GMT 1, Thanks guys, I am sure it's fine, just got a little worried when I was moving a lamp and I saw the ripples. You can't in daylight though.

Living, breathing paper. Enjoy it. I had this years ago in an old property, thankfully not on a Banksy print however it turned out to be caused by the (external) wall it was hung against to be too cold (it was in a spare bedroom that wasn't kept heated enough during the winter) I was advised to put some cardboard behind the frame or taped directly onto the wall behind it... I moved to a smaller place with central heating shortly afterwards so don't know if it worked.

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by Red Barron on Nov 19, 2019 14:14:34 GMT 1, I’ve had same “ripple” problem on multiple prints after an overseas move. It could have been the humidity of the container or be related to a cleaning product used on the glass afterwards rather than the suggested use of only warm water. Either way, I have shown pictures to a friendly gallery who said it is no big deal. If I ever get around to fixing them, I’ll post the before and after pics here.

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by rinz on Feb 17, 2020 17:58:25 GMT 1, Hey guys. I've received this picture from Murmure Street.
I just took it out of the tube, and it seems like there are some kind of ripples in the paper - mostly in the lower left dark area. Is it normal, that there are ripples just after i take it out of tube?

That say they block out 99% of UV light?! I’m not saying I’m going to frame my prints in standard picture glass. But the windows would help reduce the UV wouldn’t they

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by dotdot on Jun 30, 2020 10:02:57 GMT 1, hello,
Your best bet is to look up the conservators guild and locate a paper restoration person near you. Contact them have a chat - advise them of your req .. get in the car ...& drop your work off.
Yeah it'll cost you - but nothing is free , right ? Your work is valuable and doing something to the print yourself is a pain you can handle ? no.. ! I'd have thought not.
cheers

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by tasmannelson on Jun 30, 2020 20:24:59 GMT 1, Nice one. Thanks for your time. I will look up under your advise. Googling didn’t return much help and several phone calls to local galleries didn’t throw up any names. I’m out of the country and have a family member volunteering to help and I don’t want them to travel too far. Again thanks

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by tasmannelson on Jun 30, 2020 21:29:38 GMT 1, Hello again. I have spoken to Graham in the past and his name has been mentioned. Problem is asking a family member to take a day off to travel to London to deliver the print and a day off to pick up. I was hoping someone might know of a Graham Bignall equivalent in the Rugby/Northampton area. I will check your link and see what pops up. Really do appreciate your time, thank you

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by tasmannelson on Jul 1, 2020 0:19:03 GMT 1, Hello. I am not sure what requirements are needed. It has been in a tube for 7 years. I have flattened many of my own prints but this one I dare not touch let alone flatten. Hopefully Graham Bignell can come up with some suggestions. Thanks

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by seamo on Jan 24, 2021 17:25:50 GMT 1, Hi all
Probably a stupid question
I have a few prints and have finally got round to removing from tubes
I have put some weights on the corners but the prints are quite wavy
Do I just leave it with weights on the corners or do I need to move the weights after a few days to a different section?
Thanks

The prints are best left to relax before unrolling. After relaxing they can be put between sheets of mdf or something similar with acid free board between so that the prints are not in contact with the mdf. Weights can then be put on top of the board to apply consistent weight. Be careful if the prints have blind stamps as this way of flattening can flatten the blind stamps also. A section cut from the inner board can help.

Flattening Prints • Creased, Folded, Rolled or Rippled , by singerstu on Jan 24, 2021 18:40:12 GMT 1, It’s certainly not a stupid question. By just putting weights on the prints is never going to get them flat. There are several paper conservers and they have pressing methods. Whether it’s worth spending the money I am not sure.
I don’t know a lot about the methods they use but I am sure there will be members on here that will know more.

Edit: I’ve seen framers using the same method with glass before. A paper conserver will charge you handsomely and no doubt do the same thing

I have a so youn Lee which was only in a tube for a couple of weeks, that wasn’t too bad and will flatten fine
I have two zedsy prints that have been in tube for a while
I have laid them out on my air hockey table with a bit of acid free paper on top and now some reams of paper
I thought they would be worse
