Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by stillborncrisps on Dec 18, 2009 21:14:01 GMT 1, A mate of mine has bought a bargain but pricey item (800 quid) off eBay and paid the seller (who he says appears to be a student) using GayPal.
The seller has said they'll send the item no worries, but has made a plea to my mate that once the item's received, would he agree to cancel the transaction within eBay, (ie confirm that the sale never went ahead) so the seller doesn't land final value fees. I assume this is to offset a bit of the loss they made on the sale.
My question is, will this even work? Surely everyone would do it?
Could eBay look into PayPal accounts (one owns the other, right?) and see that the transaction has occurred?
Do eBay bother doing investigations into cancelled transactions?

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by bullet on Dec 18, 2009 21:18:02 GMT 1, all sorts of issues there. just dont do what he asks. pay through the auction on paypal so your covered. He should send you the item and if he does not you can claim. if he does send the item he will need to supply proof of postage if he tries to claim that he never sent you the item.
just do it properly - one the item is received just leave feedback and leave it at that

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by origo on Dec 18, 2009 21:20:21 GMT 1, I am not even sure this could be done, never tried this before. But I am sure Paypal/ebay has somekind of security check that prevents this.
No matter what I wouldnยดt recommend your mate going through with this, the seller should be aware that there are fees involved with a transaction on ebay.

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by Richard on Dec 18, 2009 21:24:41 GMT 1, Ye you can do it and he will get all of his fees back.
Once your mate has the item and is 110% happy with it I would agree to do it if he splits the cost of the fees (about 10%) with your mate.
I often use this when buyers return an item and you want to mutually cancel the transaction.
EIDT: It is however against eBay rules but there is no way they can find out...

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by rosstierney on Dec 18, 2009 21:30:00 GMT 1, you're looking into it too much jboy. if i sell a fairly expensive item, i always ask the buyer if they'd be prepared to do this for me. it's no skin off their back but i usually wait until they've received the item & check that they're happy. who are ebay/paypal to know the buyer hasn't returned the item for a cash refund? you can still leave positive feedback for each other too.

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by snausages on Dec 18, 2009 21:45:21 GMT 1, If you cancel the transaction no one can open a claim of any sort anymore, so make sure everything is a-ok with the item before doing this.
But what the hell, paypal are thieves, give em a taste of their own medicine I say.

why would they do that if you've communicated with them, checking they've received the item & everything's satisfactory?

Maybe someone would see the chance to score the whole amount back, if the ebay transaction is cancelled, it would be natural for the Paypal transaction to be cancelled as well, wouldnยดt it?
Not trying to dispute that itยดs possible, but it does seem that you have to trust the one you are doing it with from my point of view.

Ebay Fees & PayPal - a question, by stillborncrisps on Dec 19, 2009 1:21:16 GMT 1, Some interesting points there. Thanks guys. Didn't think of the 'return and refund with cash' Ross. Will pass it on.
I think only the eBay fees will get refunded though, not the PayPal ones, which is about 5%.
The point about the buyer doing a chargeback isn't really a concern, coz my mate IS the buyer, he can't lose in that situation. It's the seller putting themselves at risk.
