RWA Bristol Tonight - 7pm - Evening Talk- 23rd Apr, by Art-el on Apr 23, 2009 16:07:32 GMT 1, Felix Braun, author of โChildren of the Can: 25 Years of Bristol Graffitiโ in conversation with one-time youth worker at the legendary Barton Hill Youth Club, and long-time advocate of aerosol art - John Nation.
Felix Braun says - Battle of the graff gobs: John Nation & me in conversation. RWA. Queen's Road, Clifton. Tomorrow night. 7pm-9pm.
Sound like a friggin tout BUT have some spare tickets at face value if anyone's interested. A unique oportunity to listen to Felix and John waxing lyrical about the history of Bristol graff and it's writers.
"I heard there was a graffiti hall of fame somewhere in Bristol, but my dad was badly beaten up in the area so he'd always put the fear of god into me about the place. By the time I'd worked up the courage to cycle over and check it out. I was so terrified I actually remember choosing my best pants just in case!
''Of course it turned out to be one of the most inspirational pieces of wall in Bristol. I made a pilgrimage there every weekend. What it showed us was very powerful - that there was a choice between compromising or following our own strange little dreams. Barton Hill youth club spawned a flood of artists and musicians, many of them have had an impact across the city and far beyond.
It might sound a little crazy but I think John Nation, that shouty red faced social worker who made it all happen, has had more impact on the shape of British culture over the past twenty years than anyone else to come from the city. And I bet none of he cops who arrested him can say that"
