The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by mattgold on Feb 19, 2010 0:39:38 GMT 1, I know they are now defunct (although the site is still up www.thedesignersrepublic.com ).
But was anyone ever into them? Are they even relevant? Not sure if this should be technically listed as an 'artist' - more of a collective (corporation)?
Either way, I was a bit of a fan years ago and was surprised nothing was on the boards about them (then again, the Search here is rather wonky).
Any thoughts? Anyone have any pieces to show off?
UPDATE: pho-ku.com/ actually has archives of work / past shows if anyone's interested.

The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by angel41 on Feb 19, 2010 12:58:14 GMT 1, Don't have anything by them but was a massive fan of the majority of stuff they did for Warp records. Loved the Autechre covers.

The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by spirit on Feb 19, 2010 13:24:44 GMT 1, tdr are/were graphic designers rather than artists - in terms of design history they are totally relevant - certainly one of the most influential design groups to come out of the UK and some would say the greatest graphic design firm from anywhere ever. In terms of art history? debatable... I'd say not.
tdr's heyday was in the mid nineties when its work on game (wipeout) and music packaging (warp records) was fresh and dynamic and unlike anything anyone had really seen before. Most of this creative vision was down to one designer - Michael C Place. After he left to set up his own company called Build, tdr never really recovered.
They closed last year due to being shafted for a lot of money by a client apparently. Although at the time the founder (Ian Anderson) said he planned to reopen very soon - perhaps that is why the website is still up.

The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by jusdeep on Feb 19, 2010 13:53:32 GMT 1, I have a few pieces by them. Rare oversized books and posters mainly from the late 80's early 90's. They were all the rage when I was at college along with Why Not Associates and Tomato.

no it was a differant reason to this. the taxman and a big unpaid taxbill.

The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by mattgold on Feb 19, 2010 18:30:59 GMT 1, Yeah... I originally got into them via PWEI (Pop Will Eat Itself) in the early 1990s - anyone else admit to being a Poppie? I fondly remember Wip3out/Wip3out XL... Graduated to the Warp stuff towards the end of the decade.
I have a handful of prints from them (as well as a TShirt or two), and love everyone of them - I honestly can't say I dislike much they've done. I'm new to the forums, and was surprised when I couldn't find (literally) one mention of them.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. They are designers - multiple people. I was wondering if there was record of / would it even be possible to attribute specific works to specific artists? Even more interesting to see what some of those artists are doing now.
Dug this up (thanks for the lead). Michael Place/Build - www.wearebuild.com/#

The Designers Republic (tDR)?, by Replete on May 11, 2010 4:10:16 GMT 1, TDR isn't defunct and very much alive as I've worked with them on a project and my good friend graf writer Eject is currently working as one their staff.
Anderson reopened last year retaining the name and are based in the same building in Sheffield though they downsized to more their earlier size as Anderson fell foul of dealing with big businesses and their contracts hence the shutdown.
