Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by Prescription Art on May 19, 2008 14:43:20 GMT 1, I'm pleased to announce that I have some new Bortusk Leer originals on paper. They're 84 x 60 cm, and look bright & beautiful in the flesh (though photobucket seems to have applied some strange compression to the pictures).
Quite a few are already sold - but there are still some great ones left. Check them out here & let me know by email (james at prescriptionart.com) if you'd like to order one. They're a bargain at ยฃ150 each.
i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll96/prescriptionart/leer022.jpg
I'm also pleased to introduce a new artist - Shuby. Previously known as Eefos, she was born in Ramsgate & now pastes her images around South London.
The current series is inspired by Josephine Baker (1906-1975) American-born French singer and dancer, civil rights activist and member of the French Resistance.
Her variations of "Josephine" and "Danse Banane" have become a feature on the streets of Shoreditch along side work by paste-partner Bortusk Leer.
These are hand-painted prints in very small editions - and are, i'd say, rather female friendly for those needing to placate 'er indoors!

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by hopelessquest on May 23, 2008 17:02:58 GMT 1, You guys are just completely taking the piss, so for ยฃ150 I can get a bit of paper with that crap on it and it will be worth amazing amounts of money later just because he did a few rounds of pasteups in shoreditch, a couple sporadic missions since December and now (he doesn't even do it when it's hard and gets seen by everyone when pasting that shit up), and that makes him worth ยฃ150? And why the name change from eefos to shuby? I think I know why, but I would like ro hear your version.
Oh yeah and your comment about photobucket is complete bullshit, there is no "extra compression" on those images. First of all it makes no business sense for them to do that since refactoring of an image will not save them that much bandwidth (and cost them time + software on their product), if they wanted to do that they would have a lower resolution limit or resize the image themselves. A jpeg has a colour index and each pixel points to a colour within that index, so considering that is a high resolution image with about 10 unique colours you are saying they made the colour index smaller, but if that is the case, where are the blocky bits from where they would group similar colours? It would however make perfect business sense for you to come on here and lie about something like that in order to give people the perception that there is some untold magic that can't be expressed over the internet with a high res image, which ultimately tells us all that before making this thread, you had an idea of how shit the artwork was and started thinking of excuses. Tell you what, send the uncompressed image to me and I will host it for you free of charge so people can see what they are getting before laying down ยฃ150.
You are talking shit, but more than that, you are lying to people, you are attempting to trick people out of money and that is not cool especially when you are trying to imply that these guys are some sort of feature in Shoreditch to people outside of London, because you know as well as I do (since those are my stomping grounds) that their shit is getting laughed at and torn down. The only art you seem to deal in is the art of bullshitting and you are about as shit at that as bortusk is at taking the piss. Go back to selling used cars and tell your boy I don't want to see him out there.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by Prescription Art on May 23, 2008 18:04:28 GMT 1, Woah, hang on a minute.
Number one I have never claimed that anything will be worth amazing amounts of money in the future. I love Bortusk Leer's artwork & that's why i'm selling it. That's all. You may think these are simple and childlike, and they are. But if you see them for yourself you'll see that they are great pieces of artwork that have no further goal than to make you smile. In that they succeed fantastically.
Second the name change from Eefos to Shuby.... when Sophie did a show this year she had to come up with a name for herself quickly & chose Eefos. After the show she decided she didn't like that much (though I prefer it myself) and after a bit of further consideration decided that she'd rather be known as Shuby. I'm interested to hear what you think the reason is.... but there's really nothing else to it than that.
After looking at my original photos I can see that Photobucket isn't to blame for the pictures looking a bit fuzzy... but my poor photography skills. I can't afford a good camera right now, and frankly the dark art of photographing artwork well is a bit beyond me at the moment. It's not exaggerating to say that they look much better in real life though.... it's true. As do 95% of things when compared to a jpg on the internet.
I'm sorry, but I really don't see where i've been lying, where i've been dishonest, and certainly where i've been trying to trick people out of money. I'm very far from dishonest, and I don't believe that anyone who's bought a piece of artwork from me has been disappointed. Quite frankly I wouldn't sell anything that I didn't believe was good. I've had opportunities to represent artists who I could have made a lot of money from, but they weren't to my tastes so I didn't. If Bortusk's pieces have been torn down, I presume it's because people wanted to take them home rather than some kind of vigilante art criticism.
As for going back to selling used cars, i'm frankly the worst salesperson on earth. I'm not in this to make millions... i've simply been passionate and obsessed by street art since first coming across Banksy 6 years ago. I was stuck in a job and career I hated, surrounded by a large art collection (that i'd accumulated on a pitiful salary). I thought it was ridiculous trying to find a new job that I would also hate, so decided to follow my passion and try & earn a living doing what I enjoyed. I also believe that I have a very good eye for talent, and that's been bourne out by the artists I have collected in the past, and those I represent now.
I'm a bit taken back by this attack, and i'm not quite sure what i've done to justify it. If you don't like the artwork, then fair enough. But I do and plenty of others do as well.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by hopelessquest on May 23, 2008 20:29:44 GMT 1, If anybody wants bortusk leer work and thinks ยฃ150 is a bit steep, I'll be happy to produce you a bootleg version of any of the characters for free, that way we can all enjoy the wonders of street art and bring a smile to our faces without shelling out ยฃ150 and feeling like mugs.
You know what, there's a line, a line between selling art and exploiting people. It's getting out of hand, I have never seen a bortusk below shoreditch high street and above old street, he just hit that area a couple times in a few months in order to establish himself for the exact purpose of getting signed to a gallery to push this stuff. Then you come here and paint this rosy picture of two artists who are completely insignificant in the area and producing crap that makes me think you think that myself and everyone else here is stupid and going to buy this shit on the back of the original street artists that bless our various cities with their wit. People are tearing down his newspaper to take them home? Are you high? You do realize he wheatpastes newspaper to boarding right? There is no way you are getting that thin, porous paper off of a wall for the purpose to take it home. Stop trying to mislead people. Bortusk is a kid who was trying it for a bit, people in this area think his stuff is bad, he has no credibility, does it bring a smile to your face? if so, good, I have nothing against you enjoying it, but don't paint this rosy image for people that insinuates that this shit you are putting above is in the same category as the stuff people are here to talk about and in some cases purchase. Guerilla advertising is not art.
Might I ask how you arrive at the figure of ยฃ150? Does that include postage?
And blaming the quality on photobucket and then turn around saying you don't understand the "dark art of photography" is pitiful, but you wanna play the spin game, fine. You do realize the dark art of photography has more to do with things like composition and such right? So you took a head on shot of a picture but there is some magical quality missing? I think you are chatting waffle, I have seen these in real life, and what you have there looks exactly like his street stuff looks in real life except he actually went out and bought himself paper this time, so please do explain what magical quality is not being expressed through the jpeg? Your eyes can recognize 10 million colours at once (well 10 mil variations of the 3 primary ones obviously) and a 32bit jpeg can show up to 65535 variations of colour at once, that image has 10 main colours meaning the rest of that 65535 colour swatch is taken up but minute variations of those 10 colours, so please, tell me what magical quality that might make this worth ยฃ150 is missing from those images.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by Prescription Art on May 23, 2008 20:45:47 GMT 1, There is not a great conspiracy going on to defraud people of ยฃ150. I wish I was that clever. Bortusk Leer painted these around Shoreditch not with a commercial masterplan, but with a view to putting something on the streets that would make people smile. After finding out who he was, I suggested doing some on nice paper. To be honest we were both a bit sceptical about whether they'd sell at all, and I took a big financial punt to be willing to find out. They all sold out in an hour, and i had in addition a long waiting list of people begging to buy them. As a result we put the price up a little for this set... they're the last ones that will be produced on paper.
I don't see how they can arouse such anger in you. Personally I find much of the stencil art discussed here to be far more lacking in originality, charm or skill - and many of the artists don't bother hitting the streets at all. I could sell stuff like that, and people would buy it. But I don't believe in it.
If you think you can do better, then go & do it. But I believe in Bortusk Leer's work, and I believe in Shuby's work.... and I believe in them as great pieces of artwork that I personally would put on my wall without hesitation. I'm certainly not having a laugh at anyone's expense.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by buffin on May 23, 2008 21:20:06 GMT 1, Not for me either but have bought another artist's print from PA and got to say he's a sound guy to deal with. The print that arrived looked much better in the flesh than it did on the net as well. Each to their own I guess.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by hopelessquest on May 23, 2008 21:54:46 GMT 1, no I won't calm down, if you don't feel the need to rant.. then don't, but I do. If do you not see that this sort of sales pitch is a cancerous element in the street art movement and it erodes at the perception that people have of it. This is a revenue stream to you, but it isn't to myself and people like me, so I speak when I feel I need to, that is what I represent, you know that guy that opens his mouth when you are too scared to? That's me.
People actually suffer for their ideals, people actually go without food to stay true to their art believing that their integrity is far more important than monetary gains. I don't mind you selling this shit, ยฃ150 is completely taking the piss, but I'm not paying it so I don't mind. I DO mind when you bring the spin and bullshit and not expect to get challenged, you have no idea who I am within this scene, just remember that. I'm angry because this is something I feel I own a part of and it's getting completely fucked by chancers, so you know what we do? We make it known that we are not cool with it. If you expected an easy sales pitch without anybody clarifying facts, then keep it on your own website, if you want feedback, then accept the good and the bad.
I was serious about my offer to bootleg bortusk's work, so if anyone is amused by his stuff (and I'm not saying people can't be) then hit me up, if the salesman doesn't expect much rise in value then reselling shouldn't be an issue, and if you want it purely for the asthetic you can't beat free.
This is not a business model for you to exploit because you weren't happy in your job. How long do you think legitimate artists will last within this sphere with stuff like this going down? If you don't know about the history of the original street to gallery artists and the fakers that killed that for over a decade, then that is your ignorance, but I do. To some people here it's just a picture that they may or may not be able to purchase, for me it's more than that and I'm proud to be the guy challenging you because at the end of the day it's just easy money to you.
You know I'd probably become a lot more easy going with you if you just answered my plee to explain how you arrive at the figure of ยฃ150 for this (as I recall pieces did not sell from his first group show so he had them up again at his next, and that was at the peak of his publicity) so I can't imagine it is down to good old supply and demand. The other question I asked was if postage and packaging was included in the sales price?

hopelessquest,
For what it's worth, I have met PrescriptionArt on a number of occasions. He is a very sound chap with a genuine passion for art.
I am certainly no fan of Bortusk Leer, but I do feel your posts to PrescriptionArt have been unnecessarily aggressive. You may not like the art he sells, but he is one of the good guys. Far more integrity than many bigger players on the scene who treat art mainly as a commodity and only have short-term profits in mind.
That being said, I have very much enjoyed reading your posts, especially the ones to Cartrain. Excellent advice for anyone tempted to refer to themselves in the third person.
I'll certainly be checking out your future posts, and look forward to hearing your views on Hush, Hutch and possibly that 'Diana' image by Blek Le Rat.
If anybody wants bortusk leer work and thinks ยฃ150 is a bit steep, I'll be happy to produce you a bootleg version of any of the characters for free, that way we can all enjoy the wonders of street art and bring a smile to our faces without shelling out ยฃ150 and feeling like mugs. Then you come here and paint this rosy picture of two artists who are completely insignificant in the area and producing crap that makes me think you think that myself and everyone else here is stupid and going to buy this s**t on the back of the original street artists that bless our various cities with their wit. People are tearing down his newspaper to take them home? Are you high? You do realize he wheatpastes newspaper to boarding right? There is no way you are getting that thin, porous paper off of a wall for the purpose to take it home. Stop trying to mislead people. Bortusk is a kid who was trying it for a bit, people in this area think his stuff is bad, he has no credibility, does it bring a smile to your face? if so, good, I have nothing against you enjoying it, but don't paint this rosy image for people that insinuates that this s**t you are putting above is in the same category as the stuff people are here to talk about and in some cases purchase. Your eyes can recognize 10 million colours at once (well 10 mil variations of the 3 primary ones obviously) and a 32bit jpeg can show up to 65535 variations of colour at once, that image has 10 main colours meaning the rest of that 65535 colour swatch is taken up but minute variations of those 10 colours, so please, tell me what magical quality that might make this worth ยฃ150 is missing from those images. hopelessquest, For what it's worth, I have met PrescriptionArt on a number of occasions. Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by hopelessquest on May 23, 2008 22:05:48 GMT 1, just for clarity, I don't know this guy and I am not saying he is the worst person in the world, I am not attacking him, I am attacking his business, so please stop with this "but he's a sound chap" nonsense because you are clouding the issue here and I would rather he just answered the questions for my own clarity and we kept this about the art and street art world.
This is not an act of mallice, if it seems that way put it down to MY passion, and if he is as passionate about the art he represents as you say he is, then hopefully that fire in his belly will boil up and he will do what we do in the art world and express himself, or at least clarify himself. If I am in the wrong then him proving it will only strengthen his sales pitch and product. I'm sorry people are picking up an aggressive tone, I will take it down a notch, but just realize it comes from a good place and if he is the avid street art lover you say, then we are on the same side.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by junkieart on May 23, 2008 22:21:16 GMT 1, hopelessquest, completely agree with what your saying, the art is crap and the hype is b**lsh*t! IMO! Might chuck some art out this Bankhols and put them in Shoreditch see if I can get a gallery deal!! Don't mean to be rude but prescription how are you making a living with this tripe? Surely as a business man you deal with what the customer wants to buy not what you like ? Come on there's so much better stuff out there for a fraction of the price. BUT good luck if this is a winning formula!! Just checked your website and how can you show these pieces with the like of B, AM, MS Neate, D etc, I realise these are secondary market but there good!! Are you just jumping on what you think is the NEW thing to make a profit or do you really like Bortusk Leer's work?? Thats just my personal opinion of course but ยฃ150 for that print if it sells good luck to ya :-)

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by Prescription Art on May 23, 2008 23:26:11 GMT 1, I say again, some of you guys might not like this stuff, but I think it's fantastic & fortunately it seems plenty of other people agree.
What questions have I not answered? No hopelessquest it doesn't include postage, however if you're very interested in buying one i'm sure I can throw in some free P&P for you.
I'm bemused to where these attacks about sales pitches and 'hype' have come from. I have some new pieces for sale & i'm letting people know via the forum. I tend to do this in a much less aggressive fashion than many other galleries.
As for 'how am I making a living selling this tripe', well fortunately I am - though i'm hardly raking it in right now... and rightfully so. I've only just started out & I'm aware I need to show more commitment then just selling things online. That's why i'm trying to organise some great shows later in the year, which i'm certainly not doing the easy way as i'm bringing the artists over from America. In fact i'll probably lose money on the shows, but so be it.
'how can you show these pieces with the like of B, AM, MS Neate, D etc'
well between you & me, I personally would much rather have a Bortusk Leer on my wall then a D*Face.
'Are you just jumping on what you think is the NEW thing to make a profit'
If I was doing that there are much safer ways for me to do it then to support an artist who clearly, and for whatever reason, arouses so much venom. Obviously I need to make a profit in order to survive... but I do so with integrity through supporting artists whose work I genuinely believe in.
'do you really like Bortusk Leer's work??'
Yes, I do. I love it.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by hopelessquest on May 24, 2008 0:47:40 GMT 1, third time's the charm they say... PrescriptionArt, if it is not too intrusive of a question, how does one arrive at the figure of ยฃ150 for Bortusk Leer's work? Just curious as in the art world it would seem people usually factor the resell price, supply vs demand as well as the amount of time an artist has been in the scene.

Bortusk Leer & Shuby, by Prescription Art on May 24, 2008 1:04:37 GMT 1, How does any gallery set prices?
Personally i don't think you'll find many other places selling original artworks for ยฃ150.... and you certainly won't find any as good as these. Shall I put your name down for one then?
