'Special Import' & 'Bulimic Barbie', by LEVI C on Jan 4, 2010 13:44:12 GMT 1, Hi Forum and HaPpY nEw YeAr!
I managed to cut a few new ideas over the break. Here's the first, inspired by a combination of the news and my boys presents. Just a test spray so a bit messy around the letters. This will be sorted on the finished canvas but I have to wait a few days for transparent white to finish the windows. I have sprayed the soldier and the bomber once and pasted the other soldiers in, so it's still in progress just wanted to get the idea up.
Hope you like!
Special Import
As always appreciate peoples opinions. I'm convinced I've not seen this idea before, if you have let me know and I'll go and have a good cry! ;D

'Special Import' & 'Bulimic Barbie', by LEVI C on Jan 6, 2010 16:13:42 GMT 1, Cheers guys, should get it finished soon but can't make it to the can shop (babies, snow -that sort of thing!)
I have another 'try me' themed idea ready to spray so I'll try and get that one up on this thread later.
I've posted them here as they are still in progress, when finished I'll pop them into the main forum and leave them to the wolfs! ;D
Thanks again

'Special Import' & 'Bulimic Barbie', by junta on Jan 12, 2010 19:50:55 GMT 1, Second idea is my favourite. I reckon the bullemic one would be a killer street piece if you blew it up and got more detail in.
edit- gutted though, when I read the title "special import" I thought there was gona be a few beers going

Still not sure special import will be the title, 'special offer' was another possible. Funny what you say about the street piece. I was thinking of doing her in the same outfit sitting on Stokes Croft with a can of Special Brew, better still a bottle of Turbo on Turbo Island. Only subtle irony but it could work in full colour looking really plasticy? will post here if i do.
Cheers for the comment

'Special Import' & 'Bulimic Barbie', by LEVI C on Jan 20, 2010 12:40:56 GMT 1, Thanks for bringing it to my attention Junta. I'm glad I didnt start cutting the life size Barbie, I don't think I will now it is a bit close. Not a great idea from Nick in my opinion. Ever since I saw his 'Giraffiti' piece I have thought his search for subject matter has not been going well. Just my opinion. Execution is great - I know who cuts his stencils!
Anyway, here's the finished 'Special Import' (at least until I get some transparent). 50x70cm - sorry pics could be better.
For any interested browsers, this idea will be released as an edition of 5 originals on 1st February with www.1loveart.com
Thanks

'Special Import' & 'Bulimic Barbie', by bmjt on Jan 20, 2010 13:37:18 GMT 1, Interesting idea and great execution, but not sure it works as a wall/canvas piece. One of a number of pieces that have been shown on the forum that are probably better suited to being put on the street making a political statement, rather than in someone's house. My personal preference when it comes to decorating my flat leans toward pieces I regard as beautiful first and foremost, followed by political message - i.e. In my opinion a piece cannot survive on message alone when it comes to furnishing a personal space.

That is a fair point and I appreciate your own preference if "decorating" your house. There's certainly no shortage of pretty stuff about but it's not my thing. When I first thought of these it did cross my mind that people might not want a suicide bomber in their lounge and 6 months ago it would have stopped me creating them. Recently I decided to create ideas I feel are strong and not be influenced by potential markets. This way I believe each will contribute to a 'true' body of work and direction for me. Hope that makes sense.
In response to this sentence: "My personal preference when it comes to decorating my flat leans toward pieces I regard as beautiful first and foremost, followed by political message" - Don't forget the name of this forum man, suppose you wouldn't want a Banksy rat in your flat then?
I dissagree with your opinion that "a piece cannot survive on message alone" or at least think it's far too general. Surely it would depend on the type of buyer. Collectors often put ironic/humorous messages in hallways/toilets to entertain visitors and show off 'their' choice/find (if you think about it, it's similar to putting it on the street - sharing the humour). I wouldn't have thought for one minute a 'non collector' would buy this image, I'll leave them for Ikea!
thanks for your opinion, I don't want to come across defensive, but it's something I feel strongly about - I believe the new stencil art movement to be an entirely new genre of art that doesn't often carry 'beauty' as one of it's qualities. Pioneered by Mr B, but still being defined by suprisingly few.
