LEVI C - Updated, by LEVI C on Nov 23, 2008 21:53:36 GMT 1, Hi forum!
A member who bought one of my canvases posted it on here and some members liked it but hadn’t heard of me. I’ve been posting stuff in the ‘new artists’ forum for sometime and had a piece in Upfest, but it occurred to me that there maybe members that don’t look over there and might enjoy my stuff.
I noticed some other artists do, so thought I’d start just one thread over here that I can add new work to and highlight events etc. I hope that’s ok…
Here’s my recent stuff. If it makes a few members smile then that’s a result!
‘we are not amused…’
“My Kid Could Paint That”
‘Algo Mas?’
“CAN WE FIX IT”
Any questions, feedback & comments are much appreciated. People interested in availability, editions, prices etc can PM me or check out my site:
www.urban-portraits.co.uk (new site so bare with me, it’ll look ok one day! ;D)
Next do with my work in is Urban Riddle. There’s more info on the upfest site: www.upfest.co.uk.
Cheers all and thanks for looking

LEVI C - Updated, by LEVI C on Nov 23, 2008 22:52:27 GMT 1, I said to myself I wouldn't come straight back on check for a comment, but couldn't resist it.
Thanks for the speedy comment. So you're not keen on the subject matter of those two? The Obama one is very recent so I'm not that sure about it myself and might make changes to guide the idea. The intention was to kind of 'mock' some of the over enthusiasm and childlike optimism most of the world seems to have for Obama. Like 'as if' one man could change the world!. There's so many cheesy images comming out, I wanted to use the obvious connection 'yes we can' (someone is bound to do it anyway) to get that across. I think i will dribble the earth over the text to emphasis.
I'm supprised you don't like the queen idea. I think it works in a few ways, it's original, easy to get and has good irony (the Banksy itself is on subject of rioting, her grandkids buying Banksys etc) and it leads quite nicely to the thought that she might not get it and just liked it because of the flowers! (probably got it from Harrods!)
I appreciate your opinion tho man, it would be good if you could expand a bit.
I am of course, very fond of your username !

LEVI C - Updated, by rivercity1973 on Nov 24, 2008 12:10:09 GMT 1, the reason great artists become great isnt always in the execution or the talent they have instead its the ability to convey there passion for an idea to the viewer. banksy could never be regarded as a hugely talented artist but it doesnt matter his ideas are really what intrests us all. i would always pick a subject that you care about rather than whats popular at the time. Tracey emin has become one of britains most famous and successful artists not because she is particularly skillful with any medium, but because she bears her soul. Find a subject you are really passionate about as you clearly have talent

Thanks for your opinion and compliment. I couldn't agree more, I feel very strongly that stencil art needs to be idea driven, I've always felt that to justify what is a fairly simple technique to develop (in comparison to say fine art) there needs to be a message there, irony or humour and thats where the creativity comes in.....'finding' the idea.
If you think about your comment you said a "subject i care about & feel passionate about". I am most possionate about street art and stencil art and if I went with that i'd end up doing angels with guns and monkeys with spraycans (sound familiar its all over the place). I try to avoid this find original ideas that have not been done, as I genuinely believe that is the key, or at least its what I have always loved about stencil art. So maybe that is it, my passion is finding ideas that are original.
When you say "just whats popular a the time". That does apply to manuel and obama, but not the other two, I don't agree there. It's funny that you mentioned Emin because I thought of the 'my kid could paint that' when I saw her 'blue hand' print being sold for 200k or something. I was going to do that at first and then thought it wasn't recognised enough so changed it to the hirst piece. and i dont agree with the queen in the hoodie. Sometimes using a subject that is popular marks an era, people can relate to it. Look at the Banksy tesco flag. The queen in hoodie works in a similar way and maybe a few more ;D
Anyway thanks for our comment rivercity, you got me waffling ;D. My next piece is a corker and i think you'll like.
Cheers

Keep that infectious enthusiasm and keep doing what you believe in and enjoy. Good luck with your work and the shows etc..

LEVI C - Updated, by LEVI C on Dec 3, 2008 12:31:39 GMT 1, Think you maybe right Ross, either way right thread stopper, cheers Stickee
I thought i'd stick this photo of the finished "My Kid Could Paint That". This is the edition 4 of 10 that's just gone off to Urban Riddle, where the rest of the edition will be available. I forgot to photo the other 3 before they went out. It's not a close up, but you can see the change in canvas size and amendments to the Hirst etc.
Many thanks to all for your comments. Currently working on a new idea. Should have a test spray up within a week.
Cheers!

I couldnt resist getting this one on here ;D

LEVI C - Updated, by LEVI C on Jan 5, 2009 21:41:20 GMT 1, Thanks Hermit, Walters for the comments. Totally agree alot of my stuff would look better on the street and I guess i kind of imagine them on the street when i create them, because it's street art that inspires me if that makes sense. I have plan and feel ready to hit the streets, (no dark corners either) i'll post pics up here when done.
Doublehelix - i'm not even going to believe you don't get it!
but if you do and your calling it crap...then up yours!

LEVI C - Updated, by Agent Provocateur on Jan 5, 2009 22:01:00 GMT 1, Levi, really like the 'My Kid could paint that'... subtle, tongue-in-cheek, well cut and good composition. The only thing is maybe less colours? Could be black and white with just the dots in colour to give it more impact... imo
I think Doublehelix was actually mentioning another really good title for the 'Prince of thieves' piece... 'Robin hoody'. Linking the Robin Hood story with the contemporary view on hoodies and graffiti...
I hope!
