Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by rodgro on Jan 22, 2011 20:17:06 GMT 1, Hello all. I'm new to the site and was wondering if anyone has had any problems with buying? I know PayPal only provides assistanbce from eBay purchases so I was just wondering if the general consensus is that most sellers are reputable. Thanks. Amazing site/forum. Rodney

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by Sundowner on Jan 22, 2011 20:55:55 GMT 1, Welcome to the Forum Rodney. The best way to avoid problems is to buy/trade with people that have references from other Forum members. If you see a piece you like and are interested, ask the seller if they have done any deals with other members that would vouch for them. Hope that helps!

Many deals have gone well and only one went sour but we're both agreed to disagree on the "issues" Good luck with the buying (it gets addictive trust me)

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by colinfishwick on Jan 22, 2011 21:11:07 GMT 1, hello Rodders Paypal will cover you in the event of a dispute and what is more, you can pay via your CC on Paypal and that will give you protection for up to six months.
i've bought and sold on here with no problems, references go a long way but also does your intuition - once you've sent a PM you can go to your outbox and check if the recipient has read the mail or not - a good way to see if they are playing you off against someone or simply just a tyre kicker, so to speak.
in any environment you will get good and bad eggs, i'd say the ratio is far higher on here in favour of good, especially when compared to places like ebay etc - you might get the odd silly valuation over here but the majority are realists and a pleasure to deal with.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by rottenredrooster on Jan 22, 2011 21:56:39 GMT 1, I've bought and sold things on the forum and never had any problems. Paying by PayPal covers you as the buyer as if you pay via your credit card if anything happens you can reverse the payment, giving you the protection you need. PayPal have a dispute system in place anyway, that being if anything goes wrong. ]
Using common sense will also help.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by skully on Jan 23, 2011 17:26:43 GMT 1, Rodders Like you I'm relatively new to the forum and was a little apprehensive when making my first couple of purchasers. First purchase was through an artist promoting his work on this forum, paid with c card, smooth as silk. 2nd was with an America member, paid through paypal and again smooth dealings. PM's helped with reassurance as all queries were answered quickly and to the point. I would certainly deal with him again. If your looking to dip your toe, try 'easycraig' as he still has lots for sale. Good luck

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by Zippy on Jan 23, 2011 21:38:53 GMT 1, Some good and valid advice posted above. References are important and be aware that some on here have more than 1 log in username so do not get caught up with those over valuing an item. You can always post and ask what people's thoughts on prices are and you will then get a feel of a piece's current value.
As dot dot said, take your time.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by mrblast on Jan 24, 2011 9:18:51 GMT 1, I'm in a similar situation - only found the forum a few weeks back and someone posted some prints for sale. I was quite apprehensive but made sure I paid through paypal with a credit card. Thus far they have been a pleasure to deal with and whilst I haven't received the prints yet, the seller has sent me a tracking number which shows them on their way. One other seller also allowed me to put a small deposit on two pieces that he will then deliver in a few weeks. So even though I made quite an awkward request ( I work abroad and won't be back for a few weeks, hence me asking for postponed delivery), the seller was very accommodating.
Experiences so far have been very good!

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by stevieray101 on Jan 24, 2011 10:57:43 GMT 1, Follow these rules and you should be alright, remember to trust your gut. If a deal is too good to be true, there's usually something wrong.
These are my rules, I pay in cash for most of my trades so I try to be extra careful
- get references from other forum members
- ask the seller to provide 2 forms of id - i ask for driving license and a recent utility bill
- make sure you meet in a public place, with lots of people around - i usually meet in a coffee shop or something
- check the print BEFORE the exchange of money - the amount of times I've heard someone complain that they were sold damaged items on this forum is unreal
- if the print is framed, ask the seller to remove the frame
hope this helps

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by Phat Spider on Jan 24, 2011 22:16:42 GMT 1, Am doing my first large art purchase - have spoken to the chap, and seen pics of the print and COA and all looks in order - anything else I should be aware of/check when I meet up? he's got good/recent feedback on the bay and obviously I can check print condition before handing over the readies.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by rodgro on Jan 24, 2011 22:29:42 GMT 1, Thanks all. Looking for an original Herakut for my purchase, preferably from the 08 Dirty Laundry show, but I have primarily been a print collector thus far.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by murdock on Jan 26, 2011 9:52:18 GMT 1, Just bought sth from the West Coast, was brought to Germany by FedEx no problem (but cost me $100 + customs + handling). But it was wort it ;D
It important to NOT use a national postal service, though, for sth like this.

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by dotdot on Jan 26, 2011 14:53:43 GMT 1, on the subject of framing..
It is worth noting that not everyone who is selling (here) stores what they're selling in a tube or in a folder.
Some do frame works.
If you are offered a work which is framed be careful in just the same way as you would if it was stored - though if it's been tubed you are faced with different issues. Ask how it was done / who it was done by , what materials were used , and what kind of glass was used / if not acrylic.
MFM - might wish to ad a few words - if this thread has caught his eye,

Buying On The Forum Questions/Advice, by curiousgeorge on Jan 26, 2011 15:36:18 GMT 1, I've bought stuff that was 'conservation' framed only to find a surprise when opening the back, off to the restorers which add more cost. The majority of framers in my experience shrug shoulders and say the supplier said it was conservation level etc
