Print Collection Exhibition, by vanilla17 on Mar 22, 2011 22:08:05 GMT 1, Has anyone on the forum ever publicly shown all or part of their print collection in a gallery setting?
Got the chance of putting up around 10 or 11 prints in a gallery space for one night only and would love to see them displayed like this. Just trying to weigh up the pros and cons.
Anyone have any experience of this?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I think that would be the major concern - insurance

Print Collection Exhibition, by Deleted on Mar 22, 2011 22:57:33 GMT 1, I did it with a colleague at our place of work to raise money for charity. It was for one night only, and we were in attendance at all time. I'd do it again. However the space wasn't exactly open to all, so didn't have concerns about passing trade. Gallery should be insured, and check their policy before doing it. But don't let the fear of 'what if' determine your decision. They are only bits of paper at the end of the day.

Print Collection Exhibition, by sohohoho on Mar 22, 2011 23:57:36 GMT 1, I showed 50+ prints at a local gallery as part of the Liverpool Independents Biennial. Went down a fucking storm. Joe public had no idea this movement even existed. Lasted two weeks and was visited by people from all over North West and beyond. We even had organised school trips!! Lucky I don't own a Queen Vic ;D Anyway, the challenges I faced were Insurance and a suitable hanging solution (a lot my prints are unframed). Go for it mate, give others the pleasure!!

Print Collection Exhibition, by heathunter881 on Mar 23, 2011 0:58:06 GMT 1, this would be pretty cool. not everyone can spend 1k on an og, but prints are much more affordable for the norm. instead of someone bringing 5-10 prints, i think if a gallery ask a few collectors to show 1 or 2 pieces to lessen the logistic problems this would make things easier for everyone.

Agree, I did something similar for show at a provincial art center, show was based on "collectors", gave them a bunch of Banksy, Swoon and Obey stuff plus skatedecks and other "street art" paraphernalia..over 10 000 people passed through the doors.. soho's right, the majority had never seen or heard of this artform before. Great to see pensioners and family's on Sunday outings checking out the work.. I'd say go for it. If not for you, then for the audience.. they really will appreciate it.

Print Collection Exhibition, by vanilla17 on Mar 23, 2011 22:29:53 GMT 1, Really appreciate the advice from all. Will check out my insurance cover is sufficient.
Think that I am going to go for it. The space looks great and I am I going to be present for the whole day, even hanging the stuff myself. After hearing some of the comments received from sean, sohohoho and martedanielsen Im thinking people will appreciate it, plus I wont get many chances to see the prints displayed in that big a space. would love to introduce even a couple of people to the amazing artworks that we discuss on here.
Thanks for all your comments, pro and against, really helped me think this through.

Print Collection Exhibition, by jakek on Mar 23, 2011 22:44:49 GMT 1, i love the idea of this.
i have a few originals by various artist that i consider myself lucky to have in my collection (nothing exactly A-list, but some nice bits none the less) and i'd love to be able to share the enjoyment i from them get with others - showing in public like you suggest seems to be the best way.
good luck with this project

Print Collection Exhibition, by boaty on Mar 23, 2011 22:52:24 GMT 1, one of the biggest risks is in transporting the pieces to and from your home to the show location...be sure you're insured during that period as well...

Print Collection Exhibition, by Coach on Mar 23, 2011 22:53:05 GMT 1, And another thing.... I went to the V&A contemporary print exhibition at Coventry Herbert art gallery a while ago. And looking at the prints (not the few og's in the end room) I thought that many people on this forum (and others) probabaly had better collection than what was on display.

Good to hear, enjoy yourself, but yeah, take note of the advice on insurance, gallery should cover this, also as someone mentioned, for transportation.

Print Collection Exhibition, by temple on Mar 24, 2011 0:35:24 GMT 1, ive been thinking of this for a while - ive an artist I work with and just to get people through the door if he did a show and to split the cost i was thinking of showing 10/15 prints from my collection and/or selling them - I called a few spaces and most are a total rip off - probably going to approach someone trying to rent a retail space and get a short term let - I saw a few shops over brick lane way that fit the bill - the existing gallery peeps seem to just want a ton of money, I would have thought they would be more interested in checking the art the art first and negotiating a sale percentage - but if you pay them a grand for showing your wares, whats their incentive to actually push it?
DIY - not enough of it in London!

Print Collection Exhibition, by .dappy on Mar 24, 2011 1:13:28 GMT 1, I do not have enough wall space to display all of the art that I have bought, however I have only ever bought art that I like. I may have 'lost out' and not bought a few pieces over the years that have increased incredibly in value, but he-ho! They did not rock my boat to begin with
My ambition is to:
1) Stop buying new art (at least for a little while) ;D 2) Frame it all up. 3) Put on a public display and let people come and view it and enjoy.
My view is - Art is for viewing - First of all by me ... I like people visiting my house and going ... Oh! What is that? ... A lot of it is in portfolios and sleeves at the mo - hidden as such, but I know that it is there .. and will one day will carry out my ambition.
Very Good Luck Vanilla! and Enjoy!

Print Collection Exhibition, by snapwolfe on Mar 30, 2011 2:29:02 GMT 1, I'll be having a one month show of my collection this summer in Newark, NJ. There is a ton of work involved with getting it ready. Framing is just the beginning. Though seeing everything hung in one place will be unbelievably rewarding. It is hard having a collection that spans multiple friends apartments and studio flatfiles. (woe is me!)
